IO
When choosing my next IO topic and fragments I need to remember a couple things. First off, I should really choose an issue I have some sort of interest in, or at least one I have some prior knowladge about or relate to. I am not able to speak about something I dont care for for 10 minutes, plain and simple. As for the fragments: they should not only be DIRECTLY and EXPLICITLY involved with the global issue or its discussion, but I they also must provide concrete examples of the effects said global issue has- which must be supported by literary features included in the chosen fragments.
I think my IO went pretty well, considering it was my first time presenting something of this sort. I was EXTREMELY nervous because of my loathing of oral presentations and the stage fright I will admit I have. I need to practice- A LOT. Not even the actual IO itself, but how to recover when my brain short-circuits or I simply forget what I was talking about or what to say next. Practice in front of people, practice with, and wihtout the outline. Practice, practice, practice.

The Marlboro Lights advertisement utilizes a variety of visual elements to enhance the rugged masculinity associated with the cigarettes. Firstly, the image– the cowboy silhouette against a vibrant, yellow-golden-orange background represents freedom, as the cowboy is universally recognized as independent; strength and might, as the man skillfully controls or overpowers his horse; as well as the allure of the American West. Furthermore, placing the image of a cigarette pack as well as the textual elements –  “Marlboro Lights”, and the slogan, “The spirit of Marlboro in a low tar cigarette” – in front of the image, ensures that the viewer stays focused on the brand. At the same time, the bolded word “Lights” is colored white, reinforcing its meaning while implying that other cigarettes are not as ‘light’ and therefore not as enjoyable. On the other hand, the slogan presents the product as something new to the market, and therefore more alluring, without making the cigarettes seem less manly by connoting that the ‘spirit of Marlboro’ – or the independence, freedom, and justice associated with Marlboro men – exists not in a specific type of cigarette, but in the Marlboro brand, making it not a product but a feeling. Subsequently, this tagline was made to appeal to a larger population by targeting intelligent, health-conscious men who cared for themselves and coarse men in search of a notion of self-reliance. Even the Surgeon General's warning was strategically placed to not draw attention to itself on the bottom left corner of the poster, directly opposite the left-to-right diagonal axis the possible client's eyes are guided towards. In conclusion, the visual elements of this advertisement aid in emphasizing the connection between smoking a Marlboro cigarette and a feeling of liberty, preserving the brand image.
