What is Singing? (cont.)
Tumblr media
What is Singing? (cont.) & How will Vocalists be Judged?
Some more vocabulary that will be used actively on the site are below.
Vocal Fach- A classification given to a singer based on the size, passaggio & quality of their voice, with consideration to where the given vocalist is most comfortable.
Vocal Range- The lowest sung note a vocalist can hit to the highest sung note a vocalist can hit. Any register except vocal fry can count. Notes have to be sung, they cannot just be screams. To identify notes, the scientifc pitch notation system will be used (note + number representing the octave— ex: C4, middle C). The order from lowest to highest within one octave is C, D, E, F, G, A, B. Including flat and sharp notes, the blog will use: C C# D Eb E F F# G G# A Bb B. (The flat sign isn’t actually a b, it’s ♭. “b” is just easier to use).
Passaggio- Where a given singer’s voice “breaks”/transitions into the next register. (ex: chest voice to mix, mix to head voice).

Sarah Vaughan // (In My) Solitude
I had never heard this Sarah Vaughan version before. This past month I have been listening to Billie Holiday’s version and the Duke’s original instrumental. Idea’s for a new mix are forming.
“As I will then no more a wanderer be Let them with fondness store my memory And Lucifer the while Above the pine, good comrade mine Will on me gently smile? In mournful mood The sea sing sad refrain… And I be earth again In solitude..”

Tuesday: morning glow
There’s respectful ladies in jazz, there’s Ella Fitzgerald, there’s Billie Holiday, and there’s Sarah Vaughan. In the 50’s she’d spread her carrier and her three octaves virtuosity alongside skilled jazz musicians as Charlie Parker or Dizzie, singing standards tunes (“My Funny Valentine” ou “Night in Tunisia”).
Today it’s 1972, under co-direction of Michel Legrand we follow the path of a ballad, entitled Just A Little Loving, leaded by the one whose nickname used to be The Divine, and whose style is made of bebop et de scat.
The overture is quiet, in a spring cool morning, having couple of coffee, a deep breath, then an another through some piano notes before heading to Sarah Vaughan’s velvet voice, vibrato and rythmic.
A keyboard cloud gently curves the walk, under the cares of generous strings and horns… a big band orchestration, gorgeous an firmly mastered parsing one by one each particle of this sweetness.
Enjoy

Enjoy

Know that I love Sarah Vaughan, her effortless rifts from sweet lows to tender highs and her willingness to experiment. Here she is singing Maria - not strictly speaking a jazz cover, but hey, lady of jazz.
One day the theme of the day will be covers of Maria. A search for Maria on my iTunes brings up too many results.
