Okay so.  Like please ignore that I didn’t know how canes work when I drew this like a month ago.  But like.  Smoothies and some sweet sweet communication for you all.  Hopefully I have the time to properly draw again soon…

It’s about the longing.

A moment of quiet.

What should be peace is measured only in the steady breaths of his husband, curled up on the bed beside him, completely spent in every sense of the word.

Quiet, perhaps. But the static and cruel thoughts filling Martin's mind are loud enough to spill over into Jon's consciousness--whether from the remains of the Eye, or from his own intuition, he is no longer sure. He allows himself the comfort of feeling the warmth of Martin's back where his hand rests gently upon it, feeling the slow rise and fall, in and out, in and out. There, warm, present, alive. Breathing. Being.

Nearly thirty minutes pass this way, Jon trying desperately to hold back from the temptation of listening to what Martin's mind was telling him. What the voices he sometimes physically heard were screaming of his worthlessness, uselessness, nonexistence. Jon manages to pull the strength from somewhere to quiet the pull of the Eye, still so starving to Know others' misery even in its weakness.

Stop. Not him. Never him.

A slight movement, change in breathing pattern alerts Jon to the presence of Martin's hand reaching for his, slow, exhausted. But reaching. He takes it at once, of course. Always.

"Sorry," he whispers, barely audible, throat rasping with the disuse of the past month. Jon can feel his heart threatening to burst right then and there--but pulls it together. For him. He can have a moment for himself later, alone. No one watching.

"Nothing to be sorry for, dear heart," he assures, lifting Martin's hand up to his lips, before pressing another kiss against his temple. Salt fills his senses--the damned Lonely again, or the tears slipping down his wan and thinning face, Jon cannot be sure. He's not sure there is really a difference anymore. At least not for Martin.

"I'm here. You're safe, we're safe, we are here together." A squeeze against his hand lends Jon the assurance that his words still ring true. Even after everything. Always.

Sometimes a book about space found families pulls your feelings out of you and you gotta draw fictional characters sitting in a garden with those feelings.  So here is Jon with a nice cup of tea that Martin made him having a lot of feelings, either in Scotland or somewhere else.
