Irish Linen | Toujours
Toujours designer Shimeno Masayo has always sought out the finest fabrics for her collections; this season we see our very own Irish linen featured alongside the usual fine silk, wool and cotton blends.
Three Irish linen garments are a deep shade of indigo, with a soft and comfortable washed finish that only improves with age and further laundering. They work equally well together or as separates. The Thai style wide pant comes in black as well as the indigo chambray cloth.
Pure linen fabrics, made of flax fibres, are characterised by a pleasant and cool handle. The absorption and natural antibacterial properties of linen by far outclass other fibres, plus it’s ability to conduct heat away from the body, make it a particularly good choice in warm climates.
Irish linen is woven today in a handful of mills in the traditional linen lands in the north, between the rivers Bann and Lagan. Skills passed down through generations, learned over many hundreds of years, continue to be applied and ancient techniques refined. At one point, over 40% of our working population were employed in the linen industry - practically every town and village had a mill or a factory. By 1921 there were almost one million spindles and 37,000 looms working, with over 70,000 directly employed. Now only eight of these mills carry on commercial production.

Margaret Howell SS18
"Good design is about living with thoughtful style.”
Margaret Howell’s spring summer collections demonstrate everything we have come to expect from the label - functionality, use of heritage British fabrics and a simple, minimal aesthetic, designed for living in.
These values are mirrored in her selections as guest curator for the Tate Edit. Japanese glassware from Fresco Studio and Toyo-Sasaki Glass feature alongside mid-century favourites Anglepoise, plus hand-woven placemats from Northern Irish design studio Mourne Textiles.
‘I like well-designed and good-quality things, but they’ve got to be useful, and they have to work. My clothes are meant to last. And all that applies to objects, too.’

Comme des Garçons PLAY - Filip Pagowski
"a sign, a symbol, a feeling"
We are pleased to add the PLAY diffusion from Comme des Garçons to our selection. Identifiable by the iconic heart and eyes logo, the range of basics includes tees, knits, footwear and accessories for men, women and children.
Polish graphic artist Filip Pagowski is the man behind the logo. The son of two of Poland’s most prominent creatives, painter Teresa Pągowska and influential poster designer Henryk Tomaszewski, he studied painting, illustration and poster design at Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts.
"The heart image happened simultaneously with, but independently of the creation of the PLAY line. It’s as if [Rei Kawakubo and I] were affected subliminally by each other’s work," explained Pagowski. "I remember working on something... not connected to anything. I got this idea of a red heart with a set of eyes. I drew it instantaneously and the first draft was it. I submitted it for another CdG project, for which it never made it, but eventually it resurfaced; making bigger waves as a logo for the PLAY line."

Japanese Denim
New washes and styles for SS18 from our denim favourites, OrSlow and Chimala. But what’s so special about Japanese selvedge denim?
Noriko Machida, founder of Chimala, has created a brand that is known for their meticulous attention to detail. Woven on pre-war looms, each garment is then hand-finished and hand-distressed by a small artisan team. Her collections are made in small batches and are only available in a handful of stockists worldwide.
OrSlow designer Ichiro Nakasu’s description of his brand’s philosophy sums up what we love about Japanese denim:
“We design clothes "slowly." Here the term "slowly" means:
· Crafting original clothes carefully.
· Creating clothes that are adaptable to different styles of different times.
· Presenting the antithesis of a fast-moving modern society and fashion industry and slowing it down.”
