Today we ride from Colorado Springs to Amarillo. I have never ridden on these roads before so they are new to me and I am doing my best to take it all in. One of the things that I enjoy the most about riding is that it gives you the ability to be in every moment. And that is exactly what I am trying to do. I look around me at the scenery and my fellow riders. We have really started to sync as a group and learned how to ride together with a natural rhythm that is almost poetic at times. Although we just met a few days ago, we are becoming family. We have have shared everything together. Not just the family visits and the overwhelming emotions that over take us there. But the road and everything that it brings us. Domeij Died October 22, 2011 Serving During Operation Enduring Freedom29, of San Diego; assigned to 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash.; died Oct. 22 in Zhari district, Kandahar province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device. Domeij enlisted in the Army in July 2001, right out of high school. According to Special Operations: "His awards and decorations include the Ranger Tab, Combat Action Badge, Expert Infantry Badge, Senior Parachutist Badge, the Pathfinder Badge and the U.S. Army Expert Rifle Marksmanship Qualification Badge. "He has also been awarded the Bronze Star Medal with one oak leaf cluster, the Joint Commendation Medal, the Army Commendation Medal with four oak leaf clusters, Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal with three loops, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with two campaign stars, Iraq Campaign Medal with three campaign stars, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon with numeral three, Army Service Ribbon, and the Overseas Ribbon with numeral four." Today the Roll Call Flag traveled 422 on it's first Tribute Ride in Washington State. We went kickstands up at the War Memorial Park in Tacoma Washington at 07:00 and headed up highway 16 where we stopped at the mile post 22 marker there to help draw awareness to the mission 22 cause. We then cut across to highway 101 where we headed North to Port Angeles and stopped and the Veterans Memorial Park there to Honor their Veterans. After spending some time there reflecting on the veterans there we continued on to Forks where we visited the Gold Star Families Memorial Monument before stopping for lunch. After and Amazing lunch at Blakeslees Bar and Grill we completed the 101 loop and headed home. Carroll Died April1, 2013 Shared by his mother, Jody: “He was my hero from the moment he was born...Johnny did not have any easy life at all, but he always persevered and came out stronger from every hardship. Johnny was 85% deaf and suffered from Meniere’s Disease. Out of his 6 years in the Navy he spent 4 1/2 in the war zones. I know that he would say that he didn't do anything special but I have heard from so many people –whether they were serving on the USS Boxer or were members of the SEAL teams he served with –that he always had a smile for everybody and wanted no one to feel left out or lonely. He was a GM2 (Gunner’s Mate/Petty Officer 2nd Class) in the Navy and loved his job more than anything.” John was a daredevil; he loved taking risks and he would try anything, from skydiving to bungee jumping. He had no fear. I remember he sent me a photo of him riding his motorcycle and he was in an angled turn with his knee was just inches from the pavement. He said "Aww, mom don’t worry.” I said, “Really John, don’t worry? Yeah, right.” He was always a source for good advice. John chose to serve, and his sense of duty led him to the military, following in the footsteps of his grandfather. He initially wanted to join the Air Force, but later decided on joining the Navy. Today the Roll Call Flag accompanied me to the Funeral of Army Veteran Edwin George Mitchell. I have know Ed for over 30 years and he was one of the most genuine people that I have ever met in my life. Project Roll Call will be toasting Ed and thanking him for his service in one of their future episodes so I will leave Ed's information for that event. I will continue to speak Ed's name and share his stories. As we pull into American Legion Post #209 in Colorado Springs for the night. I have not only reflected on today's events but the events of the entire journey so far. We are only 6 days into the 22-day ride to Arlington and I can already feel the importance of this mission. I have never done anything like this before and I am absolutely both blown away and impressed by the Families that we are meeting with, my fellow riders and the hosts that so graciously up us up every night. Army CWO2 Nicholas P. Peterson Army CWO2 Nicholas P. Peterson Died September 26, 2019. Nick was born August 22, 1989 in Lakewood, CO to Bernie Peterson. Nick shared his life with his Mom and twin brother, Josh. Nick went to Bear Creek Elementary from 1st -4th grade, Rooney Ranch Elementary for his 5th and 6th grade years. Nick attended Dunston Jr High and Green Mountain High School. Nick loved to play football. He played flag football in his early years and tackle football. Late in his Junior year, he decided he was going to go out for football his Senior Year. Not only was he going to go out for football, he was going to start!! He was much smaller at that time than the rest of the team and he had not been with the team that stood before him in which he would compete against for a spot on the starting line but that didn’t stop Nick. He started pumping iron, running and not only did he play football, he was on the starting lineup. At that moment in life, he made his statement that there was nothing in life that he couldn’t accomplish if he set his mind to it. During Nick’s time in service, Nick Peterson received numerous awards, such as the Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal (4th award), Army Superior Unit Award, Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal (2nd Award), National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Non-Commissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, and the Armed Forces Reserve Medal. Earlier this year, Nick was awarded his Basic Aviator Badge upon completion of Initial Entry Rotary Wing Training where he attended and completed S.E.R.E. school, and attained his qualifications in the UH-72 Lakota and the UH-60M Blackhawk helicopters. The Associated Press FORT LEWIS, Wash. — A 19-year-old military policeman serving his first tour in Iraq has been killed in an explosion at a security checkpoint, the Army said April 24.Pfc. Jeffrey A. Avery died April 23 in Muqdadiyah, about 60 miles north of Baghdad, from wounds suffered when a bomb exploded during checkpoint operations, the Department of Defense said in a news release. Avery was assigned to the 571st Military Police Company, 504th Military Police Battalion, 42nd Military Police Brigade, at Fort Lewis. He arrived in Muqdadiyah last December. The soldier is the second from his company to die in Iraq. Spc. Anthony A. Kaiser, 27, of Narrowsburg, N.Y., died March 17 of wounds from small-arms fire after his unit encountered enemy forces. Avery, of Colorado Springs, Colo., joined the Army in December 2005, and completed military police training at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri, Fort Lewis spokeswoman Erin Benson said April 24. He arrived at Fort Lewis in May 2006.Avery is the 99th soldier stationed at the post south of Tacoma to die since the war began in Iraq in March 2003, and the third to die in Iraq in the past week, Benson said. Jeffrey was an avid outdoorsman. He loved fishing, camping and hunting. Jeffrey was a model son and could not tell a lie if he had to. The riding is definitely the easiest part of this mission. In fact, it is one of the things that makes this project doable. The family meetings are hard. They are all very unique and very personal to each family. As we sit and listen to these families, we share in their pain. You can feel their love and loss as they share stories about their loved ones. The emotions come in waves. You can literally be laughing at their lightheartedness one second and then crying over their loss the next. So, when we get back on our bikes and leave these visits. The riding becomes our therapy. It gives us time to reflect. Sometimes as we ride we process the events that we all just shared.
