okay so one of Cal's new stories had me thinking of THIS drabble, and so I had to write something that is sort of connected (also, if you don't follow @cal-daisies-and-briars then go do it. Cal is my favourite author in this fandom, is insanely talented, has these amazingly fantastic ideas, and is also just genuinely so nice. Go give them the love and recognition they absolutely deserve.)

Eddie hangs his head as he listens to the coffee percolate in the pot, the early morning sun warm on his bare skin through the kitchen window. The sink still has the empty beer bottles he never finished dealing with last night, distracted before he could.

Phantom lips and fingers move along his skin, shivers of pleasure following in their wake. He can hear the rough voice in his ear Eddie Eddie Eddie. The haze of desire and need that had settled over his mind has cleared. He hasn't looked in a mirror, but he knows there's going to be marks scattered across his collarbone where teeth had dug in maybe a little too hard last night.

Footsteps shuffle from behind him but Eddie doesn't move from where he's standing, hands gripping the edge of the sink tightly.

This wasn't the first time this happened. Not even the second or third. They'd fallen into this terrible never ending cycle. And Eddie hates himself a little that he's so addicted to the taste and touch of the person lingering somewhere behind him. Hates that he can't let them go. Hates that he doesn't want to.

The fridge opens and closes, and then one of the cupboards. Eddie closes his eyes. Of course he doesn't have to tell him where the items are because Eddie had unpacked this house in a similar fashion as the one back in LA. The one he thinks of far too often for how many years it's been.

"Eddie." Buck says softly and Eddie finally straightens, turns around to face his best mistake. Rumpled curls and sleep weary blue eyes fill his gaze. Buck's wearing the same shirt he'd had on last night and his boxers. He looks so achingly familiar and yet still like a stranger.

"What are we doing, Buck?" Eddie asks; the question neither of them had bothered to voice any of the other times.

The first time they'd done this, Buck had been gone before Eddie had woken. Not surprising considering the path that led to them there. Buck texting Eddie, Buck showing up at Eddie's, the two yelling at each other, and then the two crashing together in a mess of lips and hands, falling into bed and pleasure that neither had anticipated.

Eddie had hovered over the block button on Buck's contact for a long time after that. He didn't want to finally face his complicated feelings over Buck. Especially when they went three years without seeing each other. Even if Buck followed Eddie to Texas.

Honestly, after the unexpected run in with Buck in that corner store, Eddie had truly thought he'd never see his old best friend again. The universe decided otherwise. Buck had said that was what had him finally texting Eddie, reaching out with courage he'd failed to have for the two months before that run in since arriving in Texas.

Eddie hadn't blocked Buck, but he had told himself that it was a one time thing what they'd done. It wouldn't happen again.

But then it did. And again. And again.

Eddie's lost count of how many times they've fallen into bed together. They don't talk. They aren't back to where they are. They've argued more than they've actually talked things through. Last night was the closet they got to talking, drinking a beer each, Buck filling Eddie in on the three years prior to his move. But then Eddie had brought the beer bottles in here to the kitchen, placed them in the sink, and Buck had slid up behind him, his hands landing on Eddie's hips, lips on Eddie's shoulder, and then they'd stumbled into bed together. Again.

Last night had been different though. Eddie felt it. He thinks Buck did too. Because it hadn't been filled with the same emotions. The passionate anger had dimmed, shifting into something more tender and...love filled.

Eddie had rolled out of bed before Buck this morning, trying to wrap his head around it all. Because it's one thing to have messy hook ups with his best friend who'd abandoned him in the midst of grief and need. And it's another to make love to him.

"I..." Buck's hands twist together. "I don't know."

"We can't keep doing this." Eddie states; the words hurt him, and he can see the minuscule flinch on Buck's face. Neither want this to end.

"I know."

"I can't..." Eddie trails off, rubbing a hand down his face. "Fuck."

He doesn't want to let Buck go. He wants to shove him out the door and slam it in his face. He wants to beg for Buck back. He wants to shake him and demand to know what happened. He wants...he wants Buck.

"I'm sorry." Buck whispers. He's said that a lot. Eddie knows he's been sincere with each time, yet this one feels heavier. It feels like it breaks through Eddie's shields. "I...will you ever forgive me?"

Tears pool in Eddie's eyes before falling down his cheeks, "I think I did the moment you first turned your back on me. And I hate myself a little for it."

"Eddie." Buck takes an aborted step forward, uncertain of his place. It doesn't matter that they're so intimately familiar with each other. In ways Eddie never had dreamed of before and can't imagine living without now. They work together in that way, but can they outside of the bed?

Eddie could laugh at the similarities between this situation and the one with Shannon when he'd been younger. Things don't feel the same though. Because this time? Eddie wants to fight.

He just doesn't know how.

"You need to leave." Eddie whispers. Buck's face falls. "I just...please, Buck. I can't..."

Buck nods, takes that step forward, and then another, until his hand can curl around Eddie's hip. He sways into Eddie, lips grazing the corner of Eddie's mouth, "Whenever you're ready. I'll be waiting."

Eddie closes his eyes as Buck steps away, leaving a cold space where he'd been standing. He keeps his eyes closed as Buck moves through the house, familiar with it already, gathering his items, and then the front door closes.

Eddie has no idea what to do.

If anyone asks, this is how season 8 ended, I don't care.

I recently started binge-watching this silly firefighter show because two emotionally constipated idiots kept showing up on my socials.

Definitely thought the ship was in the bag...

And since I’m way too curious and like to torture myself, I kept looking up season 8 updates while catching up on the previous seasons.

Now I’ve just started 8, I’m emotionally invested, already mourning a finale I haven’t even watched yet, and deeply questioning my life choices. 🫠
