the thing is people treat female characters' personalities as the exact same slider as their morality, where it goes nice > mean at the exact same rate as good > evil, which means there's an entire range of characterisation that gets lost on some people between [woman who is good but is occasionally bossy/snarky] and [woman is enthusiastically mean and loves doing evil things]
and even woman who is good but is occasionally bossy/snarky is on thin ice, so long as she is never bossy/snarky towards a male character
#this is just a broad observation as an enjoyer of women inside of that spectrum#when can we retire the baby gloves in having to explain that nice =/= good and mean =/= evil

I know the funny advice for writing essays instead of generating them is "wait until the day before, chug ten mountain dews, and bullshit your way through" but obv that won't work for everyone. so if you want a genuine alternative that's still 'easy'
My hack for essay writing was to work on 100-200 word chunks every day, because no I can't write 1000 words in 2 hours but I can write up to 200, and five-ten days later boom there's an essay.
Of course the end result was super uncohesive and messy because I'm writing a bunch of disconnected sentences every day until I finally hit that word count minimum, but with a little bit of forward planning I was able to finish most of my essays early (!) by just writing them piecemeal
#i would also just write everything i wanted to say and then look for sources that backed up what i said#which isnt how ur supposed to do it but i was mostly making arguments i had already been taught#so i wasnt exactly reinventing the wheel and saying anything that didnt already come from someone else's work

I honestly and truly believe all good AUs should be a little “”””ooc”””” in the sense that good characterisation involves understanding that changes a characters backstory and circumstances will have an effect on how they respond to the world around them
Good characterisation isn’t about creating a perfect 1:1 canon replica it’s about understanding why a character is different in your work and about grounding the changes you do deliberately choose to make in canon character traits
#the fun of roleswap aus to me is seeing how two characters might not necessarily be that different after all#if only they were to have lived the other's circumstances#like they're still Them but ofc the hand they're dealt will determine how they see the world
