okay. doing a song analysis on change my clothes cause i actually like this one. this gets /parasocial. i don’t think i care at all.

lyric breakdown

“dont lack imagination

dream is the idea guy and he always has been. the dream team have talked about it multiple times how dream comes up with ideas for all of their videos. they’ve also talked about how dream will sometimes give an idea he had for himself to someone else because he can’t do it without showing his face. a good example would be the shirt video george did.

i really really like the pause in between “step outside” and “of my comfort zone” because, considering it’s dream we’re talking about, it leaves this double entendre of being scared to physically go outside his house. even if we don’t consider covid anxiety, dream has talked about being scared to go outside both in songs before and just generally because he got big quick and he did it without a face and i can’t imagine the helplessness of having the possibility of a face reveal being taken from you. it can also be interpreted as the whole lyric: ‘stepping outside of his comfort zone’ because he’s been faceless for years now. even before all the fans and the videos and youtube. it’s kind of a huge step to let go of that kinda barrier.

this is the #relatable bit of the song, right. the wanting to make a big difference but barely being able to do simple things. wanting to live a big life, a big adventure, but barely having the motivation to get out of bed.

wanting to be better but not quite knowing how to. being critical of yourself for doing nothing when you know you could be doing something. you can’t change the entire world if you can’t even do anything about your own situation.

when i pressed play on this song i was NOT expecting him to talk about the speedrunning controversy and yet here we are! and he’s talking about the speedrunning controversy. dream learnt a lot in the past two years of making content- he’s grown a lot less proud and certain of things he doesn’t know about. like maths.

might be my favourite line of the song.

this one can be interpreted in two ways. it’s either dream talking to the people who were initially accusing him, saying that since they’ve humiliated him, that he needs to fight back, needs to bite and scratch and bark until they’ve been held accountable. and it can be about dream’s own calculations being disproven, about him being held accountable for a humiliation of his own accord. about the people needing to punish him for it. pick whichever fits your narrative best.

at this point in the song, dream is coming out of his shell and deciding that his comfort zone is suffocating him more than anything else. sure- he could stay there. he could. but making mistakes is part of life, and it’s part of growing, and he’s taking whatever shots he’s given.

i won’t let inhibitions take control

i’d rather fail

than spend my life in a jail

i enjoy the line about a jail of your own creation quite a bit, because that’s all your head is, isn’t it? a trap you set up for yourself. insecurities and inhibitions and fears are all something you created and that you wish you didn’t. it’s better to crash and burn than to keep giving into it.

final thoughts

i really like the song. it’s very solid. i like that all three of the choruses were different, just a bit. with the addition of dream’s vocals in the second chorus and a bigger version playing at the end. i am into whatever dream did with his voice in this song that he didn’t with the others. i like this softer tone, with less filters, more mellow. really hope he sticks to it. i liked the change up of the bridge and that alec sings it instead of dream. i think it’s a quite vulnerable song and that these are the best lyrics we’ve gotten out of dream so far.

on a less musical note, and a more personal one, it turns out the suit pictures did serve a purpose, and they did match the song. what screams out of dream’s comfort zone more than sharing things about how he looks with the world? the hair, the suit, the tik tok. all little things that are him stepping out of his shell, coming closer and closer to being bare to the world. building up for a face reveal that he can’t come back from. i’m proud of him for growing. i’m proud of him for getting out of his comfort zone. i’m proud of dream for sharing this with us.
