How do you fix a leaky toilet base?

Step by step on How to fix a leaky toilet leaking from the base.

Turn Water OFF. Usually, just turn the shut-off valve or angle stop off.

Remove the toilet and remove the old wax ring and set a new wax ring (wear rubber gloves). And install New toilet bolts. And a new water supply line.

If the toilet rocks back and forth or side to side place rubber shims on side of toilet so it won’t rock.

Connect toilet and seal base with caulking.

Check for leaks.

Also, check around the toilet tank to make sure the leak is not coming from the toilet tank bolts to the toilet bowl. And also check the water supply;y line for any leaks.

While many persons may not use a new Water Supply Line but opt for using the old one. I will mention the reasons I prefer to use a new water supply and always a new wax ring and toilet bolts. 

The Water Supply line has rubber ends at first they are concave or like a pyramid, so it provides a good seal. But once these rubber seals are broken they can leak if reused. 

As far as the wax ring this is self-explanatory it made of wax and will get compressed. The toilet bolts unless they are in really Good Shape. And difficult to remove and are in still really good shape, that's the key. I sometimes will leave the toilet bolts. But their again it really is better to always remove them and replace also. One last thing check everything a couple more times. 

I always recommend to let a professional do the work.

You know it’s difficult to say but I imagine it has something to do with the design of the toilet. I mean in reference to having a powerful Flush.

Mostly the reason is that Since The Water Conservation has been in Effect. Water Conservation Toilets. Have been designed to work on less water flow. Which are now 1.6 Gallons or Less Per Flush.

And some toilets are Designed to work with a 1/2 Gallon Flush. Those mostly have like a pump.

Where as Before They Where 3 + Gallons per flush or More, sometimes as high as 5 - 7 gallons per flush which was in the 1980s (Way To Much Water). But usually around 3.5 gallons per flush was there usage later. And at the present time is 1.6 G.P.F.

Anyways the thing I would like to mention is that I use The American Standard Toilet. Called Champion 4 Max Tall Height 2 Piece High Efficiency. 1.28 G.P.F. Elongated Toilet. On the Box of the Toilet it has a picture of A Bunch of Golf Balls Being Poured in and Flushed. It costs 199.00 At The Home Depot.

Another toilet I also use is The Kohler Cimarron Comfort Height . 1.28 G.P.F. Elongated Toilet for 199.00.

And I also use the Toto Brand ( a Little more Pricey.)

In case you need a refresher, the flapper is the piece at the bottom near where the drain is. You might have to play with the flapper and see if it is too loose or too tight. If it’s too loose, then the flapper might not push up as far as it needs to when you flush the toilet. If it’s not tight enough, then the flapper might not sit flat against the bottom.

Adjust the Flapper

Next, you’ll have to adjust the flapper. Use the shut-off valve to stop the water supply, at least until you’re done. All you have to do is turn the valve clockwise. Then you will need to take the pin off the handlebar of the flapper. Moving the pin in the flapper will shorten it. Put the pin back in the end of the handle to make sure it stays put. Once you’ve done that, you can turn the water supply for your toilet back on.

Fix the Flapper

The method above might have only made a small difference. Examine the flapper closely to see if it has a ring or a set of ears holding it in place. It’s normal to find either the ring or the ears, but you shouldn’t have both mechanisms. If you do, then that means the flapper gets stuck more frequently. Take the ring off and only rely on the ears. As soon as you do that, it should fix the problem.

Honestly, I have BAD NEWS for you Ben. I would Really not Recommend, The Plumbing Field. Unless, You Apply the FOLLOWING FRIEND. The Following Good and Bad Reasons.

The Pros and Cons:

1. Most People do Not Like to Crawl underneath Houses. And in Attics.

(You Can Wear KNEE PADS for your KNEES Get GOOD ONES. ALL LIKE A SPONGE TYPE. And as far as working in attics preferably early in the morning then stop when it gets to HOT and go back in the evening. OH AND USE A PORTABLE AIR CONDITIONER OR A COUPLE OF BIG FANS. This is a MUST, ESPECIALLY in THE SUMMER.)

2. Most Plumbers Deal with Drain work. And Unless, you have a strong stomach?? (Well You can also were a MASK. And when there to BAD I just Turn those Down.)

3. Some Companies, make you work on weekends, nights etc..

( You can change company)

4. The first couple of years is Grunt Work. The Pick and Shovel were my Best Friends for several years. (This is a MUST.)

5. Basically your the Gopher for the first few years. ( Same as above.)

6. In order to be proficient in sizing or laying out a plumbing system. You have to go to a R.O.P. or Job Training (P.H.C.C.) to Learn the basics AND INTERMEDIATE AND ADVANCED AND HEATING. Usually for TWO + Years.

7. If you ever go out on your own. You have to know about. "How To Do Marketing."

OK, Finally!!! The Pros:

Those of us who stay WITH IT FOR SEVERAL YEARS. (Myself for over 35 Years.) I HIGHLY RECOMMEND. TO ALWAYS DO EXCELLENT WORK. YES, ALWAYS!! And YOU WILL BE CLASSIFIED WITH A FIVE STAR RATING ONLINE, ON GOOGLE AND YELP, ETC... and A+ RATED on THE B.B.B.

3. You get to choose the Job, the Hours, ETC,

4. Sometimes I will make Five Hundred in a Day. or More. (But this may Take Awhile.)

5. Like I said Unless You Really like it go for it.

AND ALWAYS CHECK AND DOUBLE CHECK AND TRIPLE CHECK YOUR WORK. Go The Extra Mile... Whether Your Roughing in A Toilet to a house, or a entire Plumbing System to a Hospital Building or to A Hotel(s)... Always Check and Check your work that it is perfect. Or to the Best of Your Ability.
