Fairy Tale Spells by Bree NicGarran
Fairy tales have always been with us. Apart from teaching moral lessons and practical cautions, they remain a source of wonder and inspiration that persists even in a modern age dominated by technology.
There is magic in these tales as well - spells and charms that aid the worthy and conquer obstacles, heal the ailing and bring wealth to the poor, thwart the wicked and exact terrible revenge, or grant someone their hearts' desire and make their dearest wishes come true.
I have created over a hundred such spells, inspired by the tales recorded by the Brothers Grimm and the folklore collected by Andrew Lang. One volume was published back in 2017 and another is forthcoming. If you're curious (and maybe a little bit daring), here are some previews of the spells to be found in the pages of The Sisters Grimmoire.
After all, who couldn’t use a bit of Happily Ever After?
The Sisters Grimmoire, Vol. I
A Bellyful of Stones - A curse to punish the greedy.
Roughskin - To protect and disguise oneself from those who mean to harm you.
Table of Plenty - To obtain needed money or provisions.
The Red Flower - For removing enchantment.
The Sorrow Pot - To relieve your sorrows and bring justice for a grievance.
The Wall of Thorns - To protect one’s home and property.
The Sisters Grimmoire, Vol. II (forthcoming)
Make Sure You Lock Up - To set your household wards when you lock your front door.
The Ferryman's Curse - To curse another with the problems that plague your own life.
The Shining Web - To repel trouble from the home.
You can find more spells from The Sisters Grimmoire, Vol. I and potion and powder recipes from Pestlework by checking out the mid-month minisodes of Hex Positive, available on your favorite podcast platform.
All of my titles can be found on Amazon or ordered from the Willow Wings Witch Shop. (If you'd like to see them in your local witch shop, feel free to give the proprietor my contact information!)
If you're enjoying my content, please feel free to drop a little something in the tip jar! 😊

Indigenous Australian Magick
PART II
Wiringara [listen] my friends. I have more knowledge to bestow today.
I begin today by acknowledging the Traditional Custodians of the land on which I stand today, and pay my respects to their Elders past and present. I extend that respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples here today.
Baladhu Yuin malungan dyiramadilinya. Ngadhu yindyamali ngurambang baladhu walumaldhaany. I am a proud Yuin woman, standing on Dharawal land, and I speak the language of the Wiradjuri people. I respect and am protector of country.
I am an Indigenous Australian witch. I use the knowledge of my people in my witchcraft and aim to share this knowledge as a way to preserve my dwindling culture.
I'm here today to tell you of the seasons of the Dharawal land on which I stand.
Tumblr media
Just like in any form of witchcraft, the seasons play a major role in your craft, and if you live on Dharawal land, you may act accordingly to these seasons.
Remember - The months listed are only used as a guide. These seasons are only represented by the events within them, not the months.
Time of Burran Gadalung Marool - hot and dry
This season takes place from January to March. During this season, male kangaroos become very aggressive, which is a sign that the eating of meat during these months is forbidden. The Weetjellan [hickory wattle] bloom in this season and are a sign to not light any fires unless they are on sand or far from bushlands. You should not camp near rivers or creeks during this season, as there are violent storms and heavy rains.
This is a season of caution. Make sure to think twice before doing anything risky.
Time of Marrai'gang Bana'murrai'yung - wet becoming cooler
This season takes place from April through to June. At the beginning of this season, the lilly pillys begin to ripen on the trees. When they begin to fall, it symbolises a time to begin mending the old warm cloaks from the last cold season, or begin making new ones, and begin the trek to the coastal lands. At this time, the Marrai'gang [quoll] can be heard crying through the woodlands in search of a mate.
This is a season of mending things broken or damaged. Great upheavals in life are best done during this time.
Time of Burrugin Tugarah Tuli - cold, frosty, and short days
This season is during June and late July. The male Burrugin [echidnas] line up in ten to follow the females to mate her. It is the time when the Burringoa [eucalyptus red/blue (iron)gum] starts to produce flowers, indicating that it is time to collect the nectar of certain plants for the ceremonies which will begin to take place during the next season. During this time you should not eat shellfish again until the Boo'kerrikin [early green wattle] blooms again.
This is a season of planning for spiritual processes. Prepare accordingly.
Time of Wiritjiribin Tugarah Gunya'marri - cold and windy
This season is during the month of August only. In this season, the lyrebirds call out through the bushland as he builds his dancing mounds. It is the time of the flowering of the Marrai'uo [gossamer wattle] which is a sign that the fish are running in the rivers. At the end of this time the Boo'kerrikin [early green wattle] flower, which indicates the end of the cold, windy weather, and the beginning of the gentle spring rains.
This is the season of revitalisation. Heal and prepare anew for the upcoming seasons.
Time of Ngoonungi Murrai'yunggory - cool, getting warmer
This season takes place during September and October. The time of the gathering of the flying foxes. A magical time of the year when the flying foxes gather in the darkening skies over lands. They come in from the north-east, the north, the north-west and the west, and swirl over the area in a wonderful, sky-dancing display just after sunset. But it is also a very important ceremonial time, which begins with the appearance of the splashes of the bright red Miwa Gawaian [waratah] in the bushland.
This is the time of the greatest magickal elements. Act accordingly.
Time of Parra'dowee Goray'murrai - warm and wet
This season takes place in the months of November and December. This season begins with the Great Eel Spirit calling his children to him, and the eels which are ready to mate make their way down the rivers and creeks to the ocean. It is the time of the blooming of the Kai'arrewan [coast myall wattle] which announces the occurrence of fish in the bays and estuaries.
This is the time to relax as the cycle ends and begins again.

Indigenous Australian Magick
PART I
I haven’t seen any Indigenous Australian spells on tumblr so I thought I’d share my knowledge.
Before anyone whines, I am Indigenous Australian of the Yuin people. I am also a witch. This does not mean that what I spread here is 100% facts as most of my families knowledge has been lost due to a chunk of us being from the stolen generation.
Now, a spell that I learned a long time ago.
Tumblr media
Footstep Curse
WARNING: If you’re looking for a short spell to just slightly get back at the person who has wronged you, this is not the spell for you. Footstep magick lasts for generations. Please keep this in mind.
This is a relatively simple spell, so it’s good for any witch.
You’ll need:
a clear footprint of the person you want to curse
a sharp bit of rock, must be from the same area
a sunny day with no clouds
To perform this curse you must:
Bring the person to an area with dirt, sand, or another area which would leave a footprint.
Once they have left, stand at the top of the print (near the toes). Your shadow must cover the print.
Sink the rock into the center of the print until none of the the rock is visible.
Immediately leave the area and do not return for a full week.
After this your curse should have set in place. This curse damages the persons sense of stability and grounding, making them uneasy and easily troubled.
I hope this was easy to decipher for everyone.
Happy witching and have a blessed day 💕☀🍃

❄️🍲Soothing Winter Stew❄️🍲
This is a classic dish, some of you may better know as Labskovs but there's heaps of variations of it! It's a winter favorite for me and always cook tons of it; it's better shared and honestly is one of those recipes that's always better the next day! 🤎 It can be easily adjusted to whatever leftovers you have around(meat, veggies, portions, etc.). For my own practice, I often take the act of making it and make that an offering to Hel and when the stew is done it's an offer to Loki's family, landvættir, and make it a community meal. Do what you please with it and I do hope you enjoy my take on the recipe, please share any photos if you make it!
Tumblr media
You'll Need:
5lbs of potatoes - russet is preferred, anything that's flowery
2lbs of chuck steak
4 1/2 cups of water
1 large onion or 1 1/2 medium sized ones
1lbs of baby bellas sliced(I often change this out with whatever we have leftover, sometimes carrots, leeks, or cabbage)
6 bay leaves
5 thyme sprigs or 3/4 tsp of dried thyme
whole garlic clove
4tbsp of butter
2tbsp of pepper
1tbsp of coarse salt
a dutch oven or large sauce pan
To garnish:
6tbsp of chopped chives
Sauerkraut or pickled beets
loaf of bread on the side - we tend to favor potato or rye
To cook:
Heat 2tbsp of the butter in your pan at medium heat. While the pan is warming cut the steak into one inch cubes.
Add the steak to the butter and and brown slightly. Then immediately add the water and gradually bring the water to a boil. [Skim all the froth off the service].
Add the onions, mushrooms, whatever vegetables you chose, bay, thyme, cloves, pepper + salt into the pot. Let it simmer for an hour.[Do not let it boil!]
While the stew is simmering, cut(and peel if you want) your potatoes into 1inch cubes. Add them to the pot and let it simmer for another hour or until the meat falls apart easily and is tender.
Drain off the excess water and add the remaining butter to the pot. Stir clockwise until mixed and mashed, but keep the potatoes a little lumpy.
Serve with your garnishes and enjoy! Let it cool before storing in the fridge.
Correspondences:
baby bellas - longevity, intuition, safety, good health + healing(this is a correspondence i use based on the actual healing effect of mushrooms)
bay leaf - purification, clairvoyance + divination, prosperity + strength(the last two I tend to use w/the intention of the whole household or families I'm sharing with)
cabbage(sauerkraut) - ancestral magic + old wisdom(cabbage is supposedly one the oldest vegetables known to man), protection, moon oriented magic
garlic - courage + strength, healing, spell breaking + shielding
pepper - banishing negativity + cleansing(I like to use intent for the hearth because the whole home is smelling like stew in the end), protection
salt - security + protection, healing, purifying
thyme - good fortune + health, courage, happiness, healing
