i am learning what a confidence interval is, because my undergrad lectures were for physicists and i read cosmology and gravitational waves literature, so i only really get exposed to Bayesian model selection, parameter estimation, &c.. therefore, they seem kind of unfamiliar. there's a 95% chance that this random interval (i.e. interval-valued random variable) contains the true parameter. but that's marginalised over all possible data, and from any particular realisation, Bayes's theorem might tell you that you should have a very different level of belief about whether the confidence interval contains the true parameter.
one can contrast these guys with the Bayesian 95% posterior credible interval, which you can also think of as a random interval, but one defined such that when i see the data, i will believe with 95% certainty under this model (and my prior) that this interval contains the true parameter
there isn't really an interesting take here; i will need to do some work to try to convince myself that one might want a confidence interval rather than a posterior credible interval.

huh, vim has tabs? only just found this out after using two vimlike terminal applications with the same tab features. i've been using it since… call it 2016. as usual, nice to have more options, but it makes you worry about what else you have missed.

i like how it feels to wear boots. i like to lace them slightly too tightly and feel them grip my ankles.

crying in a corner telling myself it's okay, everyone who voted A on that poll has just never published a paper in a quantitative field. not sure it's working

okay for latex typesetting my advisor prefers putting a period at the end of an equation in big math mode if it forms the end of a sentence. i prefer just leaving out punctuation and hoping people figure it out from context. i understand that his method makes more "sense" on some formal level but it feels wrong to me to put a period in big math mode! thats not what big math mode is for! i made some examples

feel free to be loosy goosy about whether you count as a mathematician. if you use latex a lot that counts

trying out a different Matrix client on desktop (iamb):
sixels can be used to render images in your terminal. i only found out about these recently and they work surprisingly well.
other than that, it's a slightly nicer experience than the other client i was using (nheko). the weird slow scrolling that plagues that client is not an issue.
written in rust rather than c++. you can at least expect different runtime errors.
the latest release looks up attachments at an outdated location, i think, so it's necessary to get the source yourself. builds painlessly with cargo.
the configuration is through a toml file that cannot be reloaded at runtime.
you can configure separately whether to send or receive typing and read notifications. this is obviously the correct way to do it, even if i want them all off. other desktop and mobile clients i have used toggle either just sending or just receiving read notifications, also only one control for typing. however, since marking manually things as read does not seem to be implemented, one must enable at least sending read notifications, or messages aren't removed from unreads when you open them.
cannot minimise to the icon tray, obviously. if you run everything in tmux, just detach the session and get desktop notifications. using screen is also valid
iamb does not seem to use the secret service api. i guess that makes sense — you might run this outside of a graphical session.
it works pretty well, overall

'recruitment suppliers' are awesome. apparently i applied for a job i'm not going to get before the first coffee of the day. it seems crazy that this can make any economic sense at all, but mostly it's nice to be spared cover letter writing

Paul Renteln's Manifolds, Tensors, and Forms: an introduction for mathematicians and physicists is reasonably concise: differential forms are covered in chapter three; chapter two has some useful background. basic ideas of smooth manifolds are also covered, but this is a good way to think about multivariable calculus in general coordinates
wait, so those total differentials you write in thermodynamics, is the field of math that makes those precise differential geometry ??
in a way that makes perfect sense, the equation of state defines a 2D surface in a 3D space (coordinates pressure, volume, temperature)
but it's surprising if so... i thought i wouldn't have to know any differential geometry unless i wanted to learn general relativity
