So long, farewell, Auf wiedersen, adieu. Monday.
After 88 days I'm back in the airport waiting for the plane. I spent the last morning in the Tate Modern - built in an old power station and a wonderful brutalist statement. I still struggle with some modern stuff - especially the ones that need a fairly pretentious sounding artist statement before you have any idea what's going on. The one with 120 identical house bricks making a rectangle on the floor was one of those. That said, it was lovely to see the Dali, Picasso, Warhol etc. Plus many I didn't know. A lot of the political stuff I really related to. I spent some time in a sound scape where the artist had separately recorded each of 40 members of a choir performing a 16th century piece by Thomas Tallis. She then arranged 40 hifi speakers in groups of 5 (as Tallis scored the piece )
and you could sit in the middle of the speakers or move closer to particular ones. It was in a cavernous concrete basement and sounded spectacular. The really moving part was that a Mums group was there and when they brought the bubs into the circle they first responded then became really peaceful in the mums arms. This response held for all 7 bubs that I saw. Wow!

Legs down to stumps.
Well not really but it feels like it. I did a lot of walking again. A late night after a great musical at the old vic. I headed to the Sky garden this morning. It is the top 3 floors of a 35 storey building commonly known as the cheese grater in Fenchurch st. It has a bar, restaurants and public space. They are usually booked out but do some wAlk ups for breakfast. I figured 8.30 am Sunday was a chance. I got a table as most come at 9.30 for the buffet. The public space had the biggest yoga class I've ever seen. Anyway the view was stunning and free! ! After that I went wandering - leadenhall market, petticoat lane, Brunswick centre and the National gallery. I was stunned by the gallery also sad that the carravagios were on tour. I'd been looking forward to seeing them. It did seem a bit surreal to know that within a 50m radius of me were about $1 billion worth of paintings. They also had a textile artist called Chris Ofili on display - stunning! I noticed that trafalgar square still had crowds of people and hordes of performance artists. It was then off to the river for an exhibition called abandon ship about the merchant navy. A bit of history I was fairly ignorant about. Then a walk up fleet st to the hostel. A bit of rest then to St Brides church, it's known as the printer's church or the journalists church for evensong. Small church but gorgeous acoustics. Its wren spire was the inspiration for the first known wedding cake. Sadly I didn't get the Sundays where they have a musical sermon but still great. Then off to the punch Inn for a cheap meal then an early night. Off tomorrow afternoon so Tate modern in the morning.

London - Friday
I needed a Tardis to get everything in as I left Doncaster. But I got there. Leaving was that strange mixture of 'but I just got here ' and ' I seem to have been here forever '. I've had a lovely time but I'm ready to go home. The train was busy and London is heaving, as usual. I wandered for about 3 hours last night, which was lovely. Sadly the Carole King musical Beautiful closed last weekend so tomorrow night I'm going to The Girl from the North Country, a musical using the music of Dylan. Should be good, I hope. Before that I'm off to Greenwich. Forecast is good.
