Mold and Die Design

Designing the plastic parts is a complex task. It involves many factors which depend upon the component application. How the part is to be used? How much load it will experience? How does it fit to the other parts in the assembly?

In addition to the practical and structural issues, mold processing plays a major part in the design of an injection molded plastic part.

Before starting the mold design we should have awareness about the injection molding process.

Injection Molding Process

The injection molding process uses a granular plastic that is gravity fed from a hopper into a heated barrel. A plunger of screw-type forces the material into a heated chamber, called a barrel, where it is melted. With the advancement of the melted plastic is forced through a nozzle that is pressed against the mold sprue bushing. Finally the plastic enters the mold cavity through a gate and runner system. As soon as the mold cavity is filled, the mold remains at a set temperature so the plastic can solidify.

What is an Injection Mold?

Mold and die are used interchangeably to describe the tooling used to produce plastic parts. The injection mold is an assembly of parts within it an “impression” into which material is injected and cooled.

Injection molding is a very popular manufacturing method which is used for manufacturing a wide variety of parts from small components like AAA battery to large components like truck body panels.

Demands of plastic die designers are very high. Designers are engaged in mass production of plastic parts of high quality but low cost. Competent designers who are hands on in injection molding, mold making, plastic part design and mold design software produces the mold from drawing using the principles of “Design for manufacturing and assembly”

Molds designed by designers are processed with the help of CAD/CAM (Computer Aided Design/Computer Aided Machining) systems. Machining is done on CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machining centres and then it is polished as per the requirements, assembled and kept ready for trial.

Completed molds are installed in an injection molded machine, and then plastic products are manufactured.
