The Hidden Secrets Of Traditional Houses In Kerala
Kerala also has the distinction of being a place of some beautiful architecture in the country. Kerala homes will inspire you with their beautiful decor, choice of color and beautiful materials. They give large importance to traditional architecture and design. Here are some prominent features of Traditional Kerala homes.
NALUKETTU HOUSES
The traditional big house of Kerala was called the nalukettu. The nalukettu was a typical feature of the Kerala tharavadu tradition, where joint families lived together for generations with a patriarch and matriarch overseeing all their affairs. The larger and wealthier families had ettukettu and pathinaarukettu featured with eight and sixteen blocks with two, four and rarely six courtyards respectively. These houses were built according to the scientific principles of the traditional Thachu Shastra (the science of architecture) developed during the 18th and 19th centuries. Houses were constructed facing the east.
Kerala homes involve a lot of traditional materials in their home designs, mainly wood and bricks. Wood is used for rafters of the roof, for beams and columns, for paneling of staircases, for parapets of the poomukham (the first space of the house) and even for ornately designed pillars. Good quality woods –like teak and rosewood were used. The entrance to the house would have a verandah designed to receive visitors. Charupady is a seating that enables one to take advantage of poomukham and verandah and can enjoy breeze and rain easily. Inside, the nadumuttam is surrounded by rooms on all sides. A special room was meant to store valuables. Granaries, cattle sheds, kitchen and utility, dining halls, bathrooms, bedrooms, Pooja rooms, wells, and other purpose-built spaces filled all the corners of a naalukettu. The roofing of Kerala houses is one element that will definitely catch your attention.
Since it is a zone of rainfall, there are no flat roofs. They play an important function of keeping the interiors of the house cool from within and the roof pitch help in easy drainage of water off the roof. Woodwork and pillars (chitrathoonukal) is a prominent feature of traditional Kerala homes. Clay tiles enable us to keep the interiors cool in any weather condition. The beautifully polished red oxide is generally red, but may also be black and brown. Wooden flooring is also seen in some traditional houses.
