3 Tools for Your Worldbuilder’s Toolkit

Are you new to worldbuilding and looking for some tools that can help you craft the perfect setting for your novel? NaNoWriMo Participant Jaluna Rolik shares some of her favorites with us!
Have you started worldbuilding yet, or are you planning to make it up as you go? Even pantsers should have some idea of the world they’re going to work in before they start!
Worldbuilding is a long, sometimes tedious, process, but it’s well worth the work. Even if your novel is set in a world that looks very similar to the one we live in, you’re probably going to want to do some worldbuilding to prepare. I generally work in worlds of my own creation. Today, I’d like to share some reasons worldbuilding can be useful, things you can include that might help you, and some (free!) tools that can be a great help in keeping it all together:
1. Keep track of your world’s calendar.

This is deep
A genie appears and says that you have one wish. You wish for something important that you've lost to come back to you, without really specifying it. The genie snaps its fingers, and somebody taps you on the back.
You turn around and see yourself.

Diary Entry From MC
Please refer to my previous post, WRITING SLUMP
Dear Diary,
Fucking seven hells. Anger is too tame a word for what I feel. I've been staying at the Spring Court all this time when I SHOULD have been fulfilling my duties as princess so I could watch over my older sister because she BEGGED me to stay. They've both been lying to me for months. Her and her ass of a husband. It turns out that the reason they were having problems wasn't because he was unfaithful, but because she had started to succumb to the Darkness. And, did they think to tell me, the one fae who could cure it? No, they chose to lie, causing unnecessary damage to their lives, my life, and the stability of the Four Fucking Kingdoms. You see, Bluestar was going in my place, but now I find out, he fucked things up. Now, I'm going to have to find a way to fix three months of political damage. Fuck.
Oh. Apparently someone is going around spreading the intimate and darkest details and rumors about royalty. GODS I HATE royals.
Which is why I've been doing my best to avoid them. Not easy when literally ALL of them are here for the Spring Festival. Ugh. Can I hide in my room until it's over? My sister wouldn't let me.
Fucking Royals.

WRITING SLUMP
I have a couple of projects on hold. The reason being I tend to lose my motivation for writing.
Anytime I feel stuck or I need a solution to just about anything, I google it. So while searching for fun writing exercises to motivate me, I came across the idea of diary entries. The idea is to have your MC write a diary entry about events happening or a situation they're currently in. This also works well for any character you're struggling with. I love this idea because I keep a journal myself and I think it's a fun way to use something in a story that I use in my daily life.
Here are a couple of links related to this idea.
Stay tuned for a related post featuring the diary entry.

A long over due writing tip!
So I’ll try not abandon this blog as much as I’ve been doing (sorry about that!) but I’m back with a writing tip! If you’re stuck with introducing characters, or stuck with how to progress a story, try writing an inner monologue for the main character(s) in the last situation you wrote them in. You never know, it might spark an idea. Even if you’re writing in third person, it’s always good to know what your characters are thinking and how they’re feeling. The monologue can be as long or as short as you want it to be, give it a go!

I'm trying to write a book but can't seem to figure out how to go about describing the characters. What should I do for this?
