i love phil but this is like the opposite of what everyone loves from their live shows. i’m surprised that he adopted this format even knowing that? like, just having that set up makes it feel all so distant. it just feels like a inorganic money grab :(

I actually disagree with this a lot. Things aren’t a money grab or inorganic just because they’re new, and wanting to up his production value and have more structure to the liveshows isn’t inherently a bad thing. 

Before liveshows went away people complained nonstop that Phil’s solo shows were just him shouting out fans and talking about food. Those were genuine complaints. I’m not saying that he changed his format because of those complaints, because I don’t think that’s true. I just think fans get into a trap of romanticizing what the ‘ideal’ content is and that ideal content ends up being things that are exhausting for Phil (and Dan, since ideal = joint for most people) and probably really nerve wracking. 

Phil’s actually out here saying he’s gonna be going live on YouNow weekly after a year and a half of no solo liveshows, almost ten months of no live shows at all. A break like that is the perfect time for him to have tried to think of ways to make reconnecting with us (which this is still) and also keeping his sanity go hand in hand a bit more. This kind of set up means that when there’s nothing going on in their lives that he wants to share he still can do a liveshow and have content, and it means he doesn’t have to spend the entire hour dodging questions he can’t answer and just saying hi to group chats over and over. I think that has potential to be way more interesting. 

And we also don’t know how this will evolve. This was the very first one. He was very clearly nervous as fuck. Maybe he’s gonna realize some things don’t work as well as others, and we don’t respond to some things as well as others, but it’s gonna take a few attempts before he can even see that. I know change is scary, but sometimes you gotta have a little faith and appreciate that this whole career is a compromise between what we want and how much they can give while still working on that whole project sphere thing they’re about in 2019.
