Resistance in Funk & MC Carol
Resistance as Agency
MC Carol displays agency through her song "Meu Namorado é Maior Otário" by re-assigning gender roles and reclaiming her sexuality. She sings about making her boyfriend wash her underwear and if he annoys her, she sends him to the "kitchen and to sleep outside." She goes on to point out that she will go out to the club if she is not pleased by him. This song rejects the idea that a woman must do everything for her partner in a relationship and in turn prioritizes her own desires as what must be fulfilled.
Resistance as Survivance
The club scene is usually a space where hypermasculinity takes over and some men think, act, and behave as if they own anyone's body. MC Carol uses this song to tell a story of how she used this space to take advantage of this type of violent men by playing them and using them to get drinks and gain access to expensive clubs. She uses a place where dominant discourse paints her as oppressed and reclaims it for her advantage.
Resistance as Political Organizing
MC Carol develops her music directly with communities about issues that affect the community. For example, in Delacão Premiada MC Carol Bandida engages in counter-narratives about police brutality and the criminalization of her people and her neighborhood. In another project, she engaged in re-telling history of Brasil through music, art, and dance by singing the bloody history that the caravelas brought to what is known as Brasil.
Resistance as Memory
As mentioned previously, Não foi Cabral serves as a song in which MC Carol challenges the schooling system in Brasil due to its Eurocentric education. She talks about having to argue with her teacher about who founded Brasil, she challenged the notion of discovery due to the existence of thriving communities on the land. This song, as project that came out of a reflection from her schooling years, was part of working with the community which shows the important part of integrating the community in knowledge production.
Resistance as Futurity
MC Carols engages in a favela form of feminism focusing on uplifting "black and fat women" rather than setting up expectations for the roles of a feminist "I will show that being black and fat is a virtue." In this song she sings specifically about the intergenerational resistance in her family and other inspirational leaders such as slave abolitionist, Dandara, which fought against slave owners and lead the longest slave resistance in the Quilombo dos Palmares. This songs is about showing that life as black, poor, women will continue to exist even with every target on their back.

Notebook 5
Mark Pulido
In my zine my object of inquiry was the circulation of the US dollar. The circulation of the dollar is directly a byproduct of U.S. foreign policy and international trade politics. When NAFTA was passed, the US was allowed to export products into Mexico at prices that the local industries could not compete against. Therefore, this led to the demise of many businesses and the forced migration to the United States. Once in the United States, however, these workers were subject to modernized economical slavery. The framework of the migrant workers is antiblackness, because the United States wanted the labor of the immigrants but not the immigrants themselves.
Moreover, the dollar also gained popularity in Mexico due to the unstable peso, which means that the dollar symbolized reliability, and allowed Mexicans to invest and store their wealth without worrying too much about an economical crisis. The reason for such crises is often associated with United States’ imperialism onto Mexico. There are many forms in which such imperialism occurs, but the most obvious are the large corporations that operate in Mexico. Such corporations thrive in Mexico due to the low wages that people in Mexico suffer from, which also may lead to migration. Furthermore, imperialism also consists of extracting precious or valuable resources, and that’s precisely what U.S. corporations do- they extract gold, diamonds, oil, etc.
All of this forced migration leads to the workers sending money to Mexico to support their families, which has a significant affect on the Mexican economy. The Mexican economy becomes dependent on such incomes, that the need for Mexicans to uprise against their corrupt government weakens, which in the end, prevents progress for being made in Mexico. This is critical, because such a revolution may result in a great government for Mexico, which would probably pass laws against foreign corporations, and such a new government may potentially be inconvenient for U.S. interests.

last one...
Now when writing this assignment, I want to take this as serious as possible because this class has actually changed my perspective in life. Whether I learned things from my discussion, lecture, or my very own zine, I was able to realize multiple things that I wouldn’t have been able to realize if it wasn’t for this class. To start off, this class was supposed to be just a GE in which I was going to take as a pass no pass but as I progressed I learned that I actually had some sort of attachment and interest in ethnic studies. I had never taken a class like this, I have been used of stressful classes that had to do with science, now I am not saying that this class was not stressful but what I am saying is that it was something out of the ordinary classes that I have taken before. It was nice to see and hear about events that take place all around this world and even here at UCSD. Right where you all sit there are people that face multiple racial, or gender profiling problems that many of us are not aware of. It is scary to see how many people have gone through racist confections with someone at some time of their life, or even been discriminated by society for looking or acting a certain way. Awareness has been brought up to my eyes to truly see what many of these young aspiring adults go through and it is just simply disgusting seeing all of the hate and negativity towards certain people(s).
Now the zine, the zine is something that is very personal to me and to be honest it is something that is so personal to me but yet something that I have not expressed to myself in quite a while. What I mean is that, yes this is my father, and yes I see all of the hard work that he puts into giving his family the perfect life but at the same time I do not talk about it as much as I should. This man has given me life and till this day is giving me life. He gives us all the love we need even though he is exhausted from the long sunny days, working, sweating, breaking his back just to put some money on the table. This man is like no other, he is the greatest man known to exist on earth and I just don’t realize it sometimes. Without his I wouldn’t be here, I would even be living due to biological purposes (haha) but with all honesty and seriousness, this man is who I want to become one day. I want to work hard every day and help my family out with anything they need, whether it is physical or mental help, I want to be there. As a U.S. born young human being, I should know that with hard work I will be able to accomplish my goals. I will stop at nothing and always give it my all. I will always talk about my father the way that I did on this zine and assignment. I love that man and my family as well. I might actually look into minoring in Ethnic studies…thanks to this class.
