The story about Hiei and Janken (Rock Paper Scissors). Did he know the game?
This story got famous in Japan during the serialization of the manga. Hiei says in volume 7 (p.28) that Team Rokuyukai must’ve decided each one’s turn to fight by playing “janken” (ジャンケン):
“Those bunch of jokers, I guess they’ve decided on their turn by janken” 「ふざけた奴等のことだ 順番もジャンケンで決めたんだろうぜ」

But then, in volume 10 (p.31), when Kurama suggested playing jaken to decide who would fight against Shishiwakamaru from Team Uraotogi, Hiei didn’t have a clue what jaken was: “Jaken? What is that?” 「ジャンケン?なんだそれは」

I don’t know if it was Togashi’s mistake or if he did on purpose, but the anime changed Hiei’s speech before he fought Zeru which makes me think it was a little slip from the author. 😝 What do you think? I’ve heard some countries even changed the translation in volume 7. I’m curious to know, how his line was translated in your country?

Ichigo… I hate the rain. It falls in this world, too. When your heart is in chaos, this sky becomes clouded. When you are sad, rain falls so terribly easy. Can you understand…the horrible feeling of being pelted by rain when you’re all alone in this solitary world? If only to stop that rain, I shall lend you any strength. If you trust in me, I won’t let a single drop of rain fall from that sky. Ichigo, trust me…you are not fighting alone.

Hiei’s Personal History
Answering some anonymous questions:
“Is there a personal history about Hiei’s life as a bandit as well? Well, after watching the ova I’m starting to think may be Hiei born after the time kurama died and reborn as Shuichi Minamino. Even Kurama mentions Hiei didn’t Iive for several years in the three kings saga.”
The Personal History from the Characters Book is a short summary of what’s already written in the manga. I’d like to know more about his life as a bandit as well, especially more about his coexistence with the other bandits who took care of him and named him Hiei. I agree with you about him being born in this period of time, given Kurama’s lines and some other details I shared in this post about Hiei’s age.
Since other anon asked, here follows Hiei’s Personal History from the “Yu Yu Hakusho Official Characters Book Reikai Shinshiroku, pp 20-21, 2005″:
“Without belonging to anyone, nor staying in one place…Hiei has lived a life of wandering, but his new encounters in the Human World added color to his life that he had never had before.”
1. Born in the Country of Glaciers (Hyouga)

“Hiei’s mother was an ice woman (koorime) called Hina. She had illicit relations with a man from the outside world and gave birth to twins, a male and a female. It is contraindicate to interbreed with other races, any baby boy born from that relationship is called an undesired child (imiko) and is said to bring harm to the clan. So, the newborn Hiei was banished from the Glacier Country, together with an icy tear (hiruiseki) stone left by his mother…”
Photo Caption: “Shortly after his birth, his senses of seeing and hearing were already clear. He had enough power to kill one of those women…”
2. Winning fame as a bandit

“Young Hiei, who inherited his father’s nature, had a brutal personality with a penchant for blood and violence. However, due to the mysterious power of the icy tear stone, a memento from his mother, his wicked mind was gradually purified. Before noticing, he starts thinking nostalgically about his hometown. Hiei moves from place to place as he searches for his birthplace, but he is defeated and loses the icy tear stone by the hands of strong enemies…”
Photo Caption: “Apparently, the name Hiei was given to him around this time by some thief whose identity is unknown.”
3. Stealing treasures - Escaping to the Human World

“Hiei obtained the evil eye (jagan) to search for his lost hiruiseki stone. However, due to the loss of the stone his mind was also returning to the rough state it used to be. Although he was able to find his birthplace with the evil eye, he loses interest in it, becomes a thief again and leads a wandering life. At that time, he visits the Human World by chance where he has a fateful encounter.”
Photo Caption: “Out of curiosity, Hiei steals the treasures of the Spirit World and flees to the Human World. Then, he fights Yusuke who came to retrieve them.”
Note: It’s funny how his personal history doesn’t even mention going to the Human World one year before meeting Yusuke to search for Yukina. It seems they didn’t take the “Two Shots” Gaiden into consideration here. That’s why the manga is always the most complete source.
4. Fighting together with Yusuke and the others

“Hiei is defeated by Yusuke, the Spirit World’s detective, and is arrested as a criminal. However, due to a contract with the Spirit World, a reduced sentence is admitted if he cooperates with Yusuke in his investigations. For his own sake, he has no choice but to help out. Perhaps, because he was attracted by Yusuke’s human charm, it caused him to act in ways that would have been unthinkable to the Hiei from before.”
Photo Caption: “Hiei lends a hand to Yusuke who was struggling against the Four Sacred Beasts’ partners. He still claims he’s only doing it for his own sake, but…?”
5. Younger sister – Reuniting with Yukina…

“After breaking the koorime’s law and leaving the Glacier Country, Yukina, Hiei’s younger sister, went missing in the Human World. Trapped in a powerful barrier, even his evil eye was unable to find her, but she is rescued by Yusuke and the others. They are safely reunited, but Hiei leaves without revealing her his true identity.”
Photo Caption: “Hiei saves Yukina’s bacon by a hair’s breadth. However, he will never call himself her older brother.”
6. Competing in the Dark Tournament

“Yusuke was invited as a guest to the Dark Tournament. As a youkai who cooperates with Yusuke, Hiei was also called up. At the beginning of the tournament, his demon powers were as good as a D-class youkai, but before the final match, he gains the ability to match B-class youkai. He has no objections against fighting strong opponents, but the fact that he was forced to participate in the tournament may have made him uncomfortable, and his only wish for victory was “the lives of all of the tournament’s organizers”.
Photo Caption: “After repeated battles, he greatly improved his ability. During the Tournament, he even mastered the Black Dragon Wave.”
7. In the Demon World - Becoming Mukuro’s aide

“The rumors about Hiei improving his skills in a short period of time also reached the Makai. Recruited by Mukuro’s forces, he went to the Demon World in search of a place to fight. Hiei had an odd connection with Mukuro and in less than a year he rose up to the top position of Mukuro’s army. He was defeated in the Makai Unification Tournament, but continues to work by Mukuro’s side, freeing her mind from a past curse.”
Photo Caption: “Mukuro took a liking to Hiei and shared her inside story which was never revealed to anyone.”

I read HxH to find YYH characters ★
You all probably know about these YYH cameos in HxH manga (anime has others as well). But I just love them ❤
Starting from Milluki Zoldyck’s bedroom (volume 8). We all want a room like his, full of action figures! Not only Hiei, Kurama and Yusuke, but there’s also Goku, Sailor Moon, Kamen Rider and other famous characters. In the anime, Hiei’s figurine was replaced by Kuwabara’s. I’m not even sure if it’s Koenma in the upper shelf (judging by the hat).

Volume 8 (Yorknew City Arc) is full of cameos. The next one is Kurama and Hiei on the stairs, behind Gon and Killua. Apparently, they are hanging out together in Yorkshin ❤

Also from volume 8, Hiei watching Gon’s arm-wrestling is cute ❤ He is carrying his sword and everything. Will he challenge Gon? lol

Popular Hiei again!! This time in volume 10, being auctioned as a plushie in the silent auction bazaar. Togashi and Naoko-sensei can also be spotted below in their respective dog and bunny version.

Not exactly a YYH cameo, but at the end of Greed Island Arc (volume 18) you can try to find Togashi in his dog version in the crowd. There are also other JUMP characters like Fujiwara no Sai (Hikaru no Go). His eboshi hat stands out in the crowd. I always thought it was Kuwabara in the upper left corner of this image because of the haircut, but I don’t think it’s him.

Of course, in the anime, there’s also the famous Neon’s keychain with Puu and the eyebat from the Spirit Detective Saga’s Maze Castle arc. Suzako can also be seen in Chrollo’s book and Hiei on a poster in the Greed Island OVA (1999 version).
