I am SO EXCITED to be able to finally reveal the cover for Runaways!!!

This was painted by the INCREDIBLE Quinn @siarven @siarvenart who deserves the Artist of the Year Award for putting up with me. Quinn is also doing the internal illustrations for the book and I am so so so happy with how they've all turned out. Zoom in on the art to spot so many details from the story. My favorite is the tiny little weasel perched on Hannah's shoulder - we had to include Kit-Kat in the party :)

In case you're new, Runaways is my debut YA dark fantasy faerietale adventure. It follows Hannah as she explores the Seelie and Unseelie Courts, trying to rescue her sister from the Pied Piper. OLD MAN YELLS AT CLOUD

I remember back in the day we had better clouds, better rains really. Better atmosphere. Sure the smog in the city got you choking but you were choking on something, there was substance, there was life to lose and lungs weren't just lungs, they were bellows, they were turning smog into liveblood. Now the heat gets to you in stupid old ways, wildfires and heart attacks. News, not stories. Sleepless nights waiting if your niece will call and if there's still a niece to call you. What are you supposed to be, anyway? Back in the day the sky was a painting. Back in the day the clouds you could point at and say horse in gallop, umbrella, light drizzle this afternoon. Did you know they can make it rain now? Artificial this or that, no rains on the military parade, desert harvests. I wonder if one day it'll always rain on schedule and nobody would have to run to the closest roof again, soaked and together with every other stormgoer. I wonder if those clouds will look just like you. Senseless shapeless things. Nobody would write a poem about them. But not yet, you hear? Not yet.

Thank you!!! I'll post a behind the scenes later, but it was such a fun process. I did a bunch of research over the course of a year taking pictures of book covers in my genre for inspiration, and then worked out some ideas for @siarven. Then once we decided on a cohesive design inspiration, they mocked up some thumbnails and made the magic happen! It was amazing to see the whole thing come together. It helps that we've been friends for years and they've read the book multiple times so they knew exactly what vibe I was going for.

It comes out on October 31st, 2025 and I am SO excited to share it with you. This book was illustrated by my great friend Quinn @siarven / @siarvenart and I am SO happy with how it turned out!!

A lot of the time when I reblog jewellery on here, it’s art nouveau jewellery, because I really like art nouveau. In general, and in jewellery in particular. And most of that is the aesthetic. I like the natural forms, I like the twisty curly bits, I like the use of materials, I like how a lot of art nouveau jewellery is using metals and stones and other materials to create a specific form, an insect or a plant or a goddess or even sometimes nature scenes. I like …

I feel like a lot of the time with jewellery, it feels like ‘I’m going to use this object to show off the size and value of my pretty rock’. And there’s nothing wrong with that. Some of those rocks are indeed gorgeous. But art nouveau feels more ‘I’m going to use these pretty rocks, and several other things, to create the impact of this object’? I just love the use of materials, glass and enamel and colour, as well as precious stones and metals, to create a form or a scene.

Like, you get a diamond ring, it’s a diamond ring. But you get something like a dragonfly brooch (Louis Acoc):

Or a lilypad hair comb (Rene Lalique):

Or a wisteria branch (Georges Fouquet):

And it’s a whole creation. A little wearable piece of art.

And I don’t want to sound too dismissive. I know the craftmanship and skill and artistry that goes into any kind of jewellery making. That diamond ring took skill I will never have. I just.

I like the emphasis on form more than material that you get with art nouveau. Like normally you hear ‘glass jewellery’, ‘enamel jewellery’, and it’s cheap, it’s frowned upon, but in art nouveau it’s what that glass or enamel was used to make that’s the important part:

I'm glad tumblr lets you view these images larger because on instagram the thumbnail size of these images really does not do justice to how much detail is in the foliage. @siarven / @siarvenart did a brilliant job bringing the forests of Faerieland to life in this cover and even though I'm only letting you see the top corner of the cover, I'm so excited to reveal the whole thing in a couple days.
