Sturgeons evolved their armor over millions of years. Sturgeons all over the world grew and changed in relative isolation from each other, scales slowly adapting to their local environments over the generations. Over 20 individual subspecies now display a striking variety of scutes in all shapes, sizes, and colors.

The Bisti/De-Na-Zin Wilderness encompasses 41,170 acres of rock formations that would seem more natural on Mars. It is one of several protected badlands in the Four Corners area. Ah-She-Sle-Pah Wilderness is a few miles south. Angel Peak badlands is about 20 miles northeast.

Saw this fellow at a local wildlife refuge, not far off was a red winged blackbird that they were well, mocking. For whatever reason, I thought it was a catbird when I first saw it.
