The name of my maternal grandmother was Eugenie - Guitta Swartzwald, I guess
Eugenie Guitta Bieder - Schwartzwald was the name of my maternal grandmother. My name is Gita, after Eugenie Guitta, whom i’ve never met because she died in Poland during WW2. Guitta is a name in Yiddish, meaning good. I was the only girl in my 1946 class whose name was in Yiddish rather than in Hebrew. Bieder means honest in German. Schartzwald is a forest in Germany. Their families had plausibly migrated from Germany to Poland, maybe generations before my mother and her younger sister were born, in 1912 and 1913 respectively. As far as I know, Eugenie had only two brothers, Adolf Bieder, who died during WW2 as well, and Leopold Bieder, who was hidden by friends in Krakov, survived the holocaust, and died in Haifa at the age of 102.
