more duan jiaxu thoughts

i think one of the main reasons i have such a soft spot for jiaxu is because his loneliness (and how he copes with it) speaks to me. i can't say i relate to or understand his experiences, but i do know how intense the feelings of loneliness can get— without even your own self realising that you are lonely. and giving in to it, believing that being alone for the rest of your life is fine because you don't want to burden someone else. also, because you don't believe that someone could possibly power through to actually stand by you, and love you for all that you are. haven't a lot of us been there, too?

for whatever reason, giving love always seems so much easier than receiving it— especially when you're not used to being the one on the receiving end.

jiaxu is like that. for him, being alone became the obvious, the norm, and his past made it even harder for him to open up to other people. he had to stay strong for his parents' sakes– tending to his mother's physical and mental health, and taking the responsibility of his father's bills. and then there's the whole thing with jiang ying. afraid that people would associate him to his father, he learnt to always suppress his feelings— his smile and easy-going nature being the last 'armour' he could resort to, a way to protect himself from the constant hurt and disappointments.

all of it left him with no space to prioritize his own self, and by the time he is free of the debts and living a somewhat easier life, he has resigned himself to the solitary lifestyle; not hoping for any more or less.

and THEN comes in sang zhi, telling him that no, he does deserve more. that he deserves to be loved and cherished and protected too. he deserves to have that special someone in his life as much as anyone else does. this is where hidden love won me over; it's nothing groundbreaking and has flaws in its writing, but the way it portrays love, and the changing dynamics between the two leads, is done with so much heart—and most importantly, i could connect with the characters! which is a make-it-or-break-it factor for me when i'm watching a series.

zheyuan's eye acting is so good and it works so well for jiaxu in hidden love, because we don't get his pov until the later episodes. while his easy-going and cheery disposition isn't all a facade, it's clear he is dealing with a rather heavy burden in life— what with the constant part-time jobs and his comatose father. he portrays jiaxu's underlying sadness so well that it makes your heart go out to him even before we find out more about him.

case in point; the epilogue of ep6.

jiaxu's initial amusement at finding the red pocket that he realizes sang zhi had slipped into his coat, the smile then giving way to tears after he reads the paper strip. there isn't a single word spoken throughout the scene, but his eyes speak volumes of the impact it had on him.

I think Hidden Love has handled first love so well. There's been so much chatter on this one for me personally it works because its well handled. The drama is aware of the age gap, and the ML never see the FL as anything but a sister, they have time apart she distnaces herself and says goodbye to her first love. When they meet again, the change in our ML is gradual and by then they are in much similar places in life - I think sometimes in age gaps timing is everything - 5 years in your teens isn't the same as 5 years in your 20's and 30's.

This drama is aware of that and therefore its working for me, I'm enjoying the gradual change, the growth in these characters. I'm sat and ready for more.

I love this drama so much
