How the EU funds Cornwall
With Cornwall being one of the major receivers of EU funding it is a bit of a shock that they voted so strongly to Leave the EU.
£341 million is allocated to Cornwall alone.
However, with motions starting to be put in place for the United Kingdom to Leave the European Union it will be interesting to see how Cornwall feels about their decision once they do not have access to the EU’s pot of gold.
Here’s eight places in Cornwall that have been recipients of EU funding.
Newlyn Fish Market

Newlyn Harbor Fish market has been granted £1.3 million from the European funding committee. The Fish market had been bidding to secure the grant for two years.
The Bosses at Newlyn Harbor say the money being invested will enable a refurbishment of the fish market facilities, as well as opening up possibilities for new selling platforms.
"It has been a long journey and when Brexit came along it was a bit of a shock, but we have now secured this European funding”.
Rob Parsons, Harbor Master.
Hayle Marine Renewable Energy

The Cornish town of Hayle is home to the largest marine energy test site in the world, Wave Hub Ltd.
The project had £6.9 million pumped in to it from the EU. This project will be based at Hayle Marine Renewables Business Park and will work with partner organisations to support innovation across four themes: marine energy, marine manufacturing, maritime operations and marine environmental technologies.
Isles of Scilly Voucher Scheme

This scheme, managed by the Council of the Isles of Scilly, will make investments of between £1,000 and £100,000 in small and medium sized enterprises on the islands. It aims to generate long term, sustainable business growth and to create higher value jobs. investment: £1.4m
Jubilee Geothermal Heat Project

After the battering Jubilee Pool took in the storms of 2014, the whole pool had to undergo major reconstruction. The pool had a successful relauch this summer, there are now plans to add a heated section of the pool using Geothermal heating technology.
To help make this project possible the EU have given £1.5 million in funding to the pools organisers.
Outset Cornwall

Outset Cornwall delivers personalized support for individuals who are looking to start their own business or who have recently started their own business. The project’s objective is to increase the number of business start-ups as well as support new enterprises to grow.
Support is delivered through Outset, the Spark program, Truro and Penwith College, and the Engine Room.
The EU invested £3.4million in the project.
St. Erth Multi Modal Hub

This project will develop the area around St. Erth railway station as a transport hub serving West Cornwall.
It will connect the railway mainline, A30 trunk road, St Ives park and ride service and the bus network, making public transport more appealing and commercially viable.
EU invested £5.4million in the project.
Marazion Marshes

Marazion Marsh is a freshwater marsh SSSI and Special Protection Area (SPA) in Mounts Bay, Cornwall. A large percentage of Marazion Marsh is managed as a reserve by the RSPB.
Marazion Marsh is actively but unofficially managed by the RSPB to prevent increasing flood risk to the community of Longrock and the main Penzance to London rail line. The Environment Agency is therefore currently developing a Water Level Management Plan (WLMP) with Natural England and the RSPB to formalize the management.
The final cost has not yet been determined but from the figures that have been calculated so far the funding will roughly come in at around £5.5 million.
Longrock

This feature of the Long Rock Coastal Developments Project tackles the integrity of the coastal revetment that protects the coast path, mainline railway, property and the infrastructure behind it.
These vulnerable coastal defenses currently comprise of a mix of natural sand dunes, masonry sea walls, cladded revetments and intermittent rock armor, in varying states of repair and condition.
The EU are putting £1 million in to funding the project.
