Teslas aren’t much different from internal combustion engine cars. Granted, they use cutting-edge electrical technology, are kinder to the environment, and perhaps more fun than ICE cars. However, regarding how their wipers and washer fluids work, Teslas and ICE are relatively similar.  Tesla windshield washer fluid goes into a designated slot under the hood. The cap has the wiper and washer icon imprinted, making it rather difficult to miss. Whenever the fluid goes low, that’s the place to refill the washer fluid reservoir. I’ll look at Tesla washer fluids in greater depth. This piece will educate you on which wiper fluid to use with your Tesla, how to use the fluid, and how to refill it. Best Windshield Washer Fluid for Tesla Tesla has recommendations on what wiper fluid to use, but rather than tell you what to buy, it tells you what not to purchase. It leaves many Tesla owners confused, but I believe that it’s pretty easy to understand.  The best windshield washer fluid for Tesla is one that doesn’t contain bug wash or water repellent. The best washer fluid for a Tesla to be driven in cold weather is washer fluid with antifreeze.  Tesla doesn’t want you to use washer fluids with bug wash or water repellent because these fluids may damage the washer system. The company claims that such washer fluid leads to noisiness, smearing, or streaking.  Smearing and streaking reduce visibility; therefore, you should stay away from washer fluids that cause further damage to your windshield instead of cleaning it.  If you’re likely to experience temperatures below 40° F (4° C), remember to use wiper fluid with antifreeze qualities.  Tesla doesn’t recommend a specific brand of washer fluid, but it guides you on which type of fluid to purchase. Also, if you’re traveling, take note of the weather at your destination and on the way there. If you’ll stay or pass through places with 40° F (4° C) or below temperatures, fill up with washer fluid containing antifreeze.  Can you use old-fashioned water? I hear you ask. Well, a good number of Tesla owners seem sold on the idea.  Water mixed with a bit of detergent appears to be a popular option among Tesla owners. You might get away with using water during the summer, but the water will freeze and cause damage during the winter. There’s no guarantee that you’ll remember to swap water with antifreeze water fluid before the cold comes.  Therefore, you’re better off sticking to washer fluid with antifreeze all year long. Does Tesla Have Windshield Wiper Fluid? It’s easy to find out if your Tesla has windshield washer fluid in it or not. An icon on the monitor will come to tell you if you need to fill up with washer fluid.  Teslas typically have windshield wiper fluid. However, the amount varies between different Teslas. If you’ve received your Tesla, but the washer fluid doesn’t work, and there’s no warning on the dash, the chances are that you aren't depressing the washer button deep enough. What Windshield Washer Fluid Does Tesla Recommend? Tesla doesn’t recommend a specific brand of washer fluid. Although, it wouldn’t surprise me if Elon Musk approved the manufacture of Tesla washer fluid.  Tesla recommends that you use windshield washer fluid without bug wash or water repellent. It then suggests that you use antifreeze washer fluid when driving in areas at or under 40° F (4° C). The company says that wiper fluid with bug wash or water repellent formula can damage the wiper system and reduce visibility. How Do You Use Windshield Washer Fluid in a Tesla?
In all Teslas, the button that controls the windshield washer fluid is on a lever on the left side of the steering. The wiper symbols on the lever make it impossible to miss. You can simply press the button to get the windshield wiper working. However, it works differently on each Tesla model.  Model Y/3 To activate the washer fluid in a model Y or model 3, press and hold the button at the end of the lever.  The wipers will activate automatically and clean your windshield as the washer fluid flows.  Releasing the button will stop the wiper fluid flow. The wipers will wipe three more times before halting. Model X/S The washer fluid system in the Model X/S catches some people out, especially previous owners of the model 3/Y because it works a little differently. Some owners even assume that the washer fluid system is broken.  In a model X/S, partial depression of the button at the end of the left lever causes the wiper to wipe once. To activate the washer fluid, ensure that the button is fully depressed. When fully depressed, the washer fluid will fly out, and the wipers will keep wiping.  After releasing the button, the wiper will wipe thrice before stopping.  Tesla Model Washer fluid button Model 3/Y Depress button once Model X/S Depress button fully (to the second level) How Do You Refill Tesla Windshield Fluid? As stated above, the windshield fluid system in a Tesla isn’t much different from an ICE car. If you had a car before, you wouldn’t even need to look at the user manual to find and fill the reservoir.  Follow these steps to refill Tesla windshield fluid: Locate the washer fluid under the hood.Wipe the cap off any dirt.Lift the cap and fill to about two inches from the top.Reattach the cap firmly. As you can see, it’s a pretty simple process.  Your Tesla will inform you via a message on the touchscreen when the car needs a washer fluid refill.  The message appears when the washer fluid nears completion. Most people need a while to become familiar with the scores of evolving attributes, including keys, fobs, and key cards. So how can you unlock a Tesla? Tesla officially offers four ways to unlock your car: keys, fobs, key cards, and a smartphone app. Unofficially, you may try Tesla key card or fob alternatives like rings or bracelets. All methods have pros and cons, and you can use every mechanism for your convenience. The latest Tesla models don’t have a key fob unless you purchase it separately. The default unlocking methods are the key card and your smartphone, either through the app or Bluetooth. This guide unlocks all the technicalities you should know about Tesla’s keys, fobs, and key cards.  How To Unlock and Lock a Tesla Tesla uses four technologies to unlock and lock its Models 3 and Y. The latest versions of the earlier flagship Models X and S can also support these mechanisms.  Let’s go over each one of these methods below.  1. Use Tesla Key Cards The key card is Tesla’s primary and default access mechanism. Tesla introduced the short-range radio-frequency identification sensor in Model 3, located just below the side camera next to the front door. The key card has a chip and antenna inside.  Place or tap the key card over the sensor in the frame to unlock and lock your Tesla. You’ll hear two honks when you unlock, and one after you lock the car. A pair of key cards is included in the package when you purchase a Tesla. You must add the second key card.  Tesla Key Card Pros Slender and light. You can pair several key cards for family and friends.Easy to add, remove, and manage. Tesla Key Card Cons You must tap the key card physically.The key card doesn’t facilitate passive lock or unlock.The material isn’t sturdy enough for rough handling.  2. Use Tesla’s Smartphone App Tesla’s official smartphone app provides remote access to your car, allows you to lock and unlock your car, and offers several other controls. After activating your account, which may take around 48 hours, you can start using the remote access and other controlling features.  You need a smartphone app, an internet connection, and an activated Tesla account to convert your phone into a Bluetooth key. Plus, you need to follow the same process for every new Tesla app account for family and friends. Tesla Smartphone App Pros Effortless remote access.Lock, unlock, and restrict access to selected settings.App-based climate control and navigation, etc. Tesla Smartphone App Cons Dependent on the internet.Access is limited to phones with the app and activated accounts.The app doesn’t facilitate passive lock or unlock.  You need the original authenticated key card to add or pair and authorize any new phone key, fob, or alternatives. The only way to program the original key card is by visiting a service center. Also, Tesla key fobs are preprogrammed, but third-party alternatives generally have blank chips. Before that, you need to download the smartphone app and get your username and password registered with Tesla to activate your account and add the phone. Once paired, the phone serves as a standalone key, independent of the Tesla app, the key card, and key fobs—the latter only when or if you purchase. Tesla allows you to add up to 19 keys, including phones, cards, and fobs. Hence, you can convert several phones into Tesla keys.  The most noteworthy advantage of using a phone key is convenience. You don’t have to place the Tesla key card on the sensor to unlock or lock. The phone’s proximity locks and unlocks the car, so you will hear a single or double honk as you walk towards or away from the Tesla. 
Phone Key Pros Hands-free lock and unlock.Automated lock and unlock based on proximity.You can add several phone keys.Easy to add, remove, and manage.  Phone Key Cons You need the phone at all times.The phone must have a sufficient charge.The Bluetooth must be on for auto lock and unlock.Auto-lock and unlock efficiency varies for phones. 4. Use Tesla Key Fobs Tesla key fobs are an official aftermarket accessory. You can buy a key fob from Tesla for around $150 to $175. Unlike key cards, you don’t get a pair of fobs. You can sync a key fob in the same way you would add a new phone or card. In addition to locking and unlocking at close proximity, Tesla key fobs can also operate the trunks at the back and front. Double-click a Tesla key fob to unlock and single-click to lock the door and the rear or front trunk. You can add a maximum of four fobs among the 19 keys.  Tesla Key Fob Pros A conventional option to lock and unlock.You can lock and unlock the trunks, too.Water-resistant and sturdier than the key card.Model Y fobs with the Tesla logo facilitate passive lock and unlock. Tesla Key Card and Fob Alternatives Tesla key and fob alternatives that are compatible with the same short-range radio-frequency technology as the official cards have a chip and antenna. You can buy an alternative or make your own using the key card components.  The Tesla key fob alternatives are third-party accessories. Thus, the embedded chips and other technologies may or may not be compatible with your Tesla, which could be due to a specific issue with a model or the tech. Also, the accessories function differently from the Tesla key and fobs.. You can pair the alternatives in the same way you add your phone and a Tesla key fob or card. You can remove the plastic, extract the chip and antenna, bend, or reshape it while ensuring it still works to fit into any form factor and make a DIY key. You can drive a Tesla without a key card by using your paired phone, access the system through the official app, or buy a fob from Tesla. The key card and fob alternatives, such as rings or bracelets, are an option. However, verify if the third-party solutions can work seamlessly with your Tesla.  You don’t need a key card to drive a Tesla. If you’re using any other paired keys, such as phone, app, or fob, you can unlock and lock your car, thus powering the system on and off, respectively. Once inside, press on the brake, then put the car into gear and drive.  The only instances when you’ll need your key card are if you have to pair a new device, remove an existing fob, add another phone, don’t have any phone key, or manage different systems synced with the Tesla.
Also, you can set a pin to drive for additional security.  Set a Pin To Drive Pin to Drive is a security feature to prevent unauthorized access to the system. Unlocking a Tesla gives you access to the control panel. Subsequently, you can use the first authenticated and activated key card to add all other keys, be it another card, your and others’ phones, a Tesla fob, or any alternative you may choose.  Take these steps to add and activate a Tesla key card: Access the Menu on the Tesla touchscreen.Tap on Controls > Locks > +. Scan the new key card on the center console.Scan the original authenticated key card to authorize.The new card will show up as an unknown key.Rename it and exit. Can You Use Your Phone as a Key for Tesla? You can use your phone as a Tesla key if it’s paired with the system through Bluetooth. Download the Tesla app on the phone, log in using registered details, add the device through the touchscreen Menu and Locks, and activate it using an authenticated key card.  The same process of adding and activating a key card applies to pairing a phone, Tesla key fob, or alternatives. Adding a phone as a key requires authentication through the Tesla app in addition to key card authorization. Add key fobs by scanning them in the same way as cards. You can start a Tesla without a key using your phone, a smartphone app, and a fob. The primary key card is required during setup, but you can use your smartphones for passive lock and unlock. Also, you can use Tesla’s app for instant access and 19 keys, including several phones, cards, and fobs.  Every authorized method serves as a standalone access mechanism. You don’t need to rely on any particular key as all the 19 keys coexist and can function independently. Let us consider a few scenarios to elaborate.  You can use your paired phone’s Bluetooth for passive entry (auto-unlock and lock).You can use the Tesla app to lock, unlock, start, summon, and control many settings. You can ask someone you trust to use the app if you lose your smartphone.You can download the app on someone’s smartphone, if available, and log in for access.You can use a Tesla key, card, or fob alternative as a backup or primary entry mode.  Can I Drive a Tesla Without the Key? You can drive a Tesla without the key by accessing the system through the app. Also, you can start driving using your phone key, a card and fob alternative, or if the car is unlocked. How To Keep Tesla Unlocked To keep Tesla unlocked, disable the walk-away auto-locking feature or unpair your phone key and passive fob. Key cards and fobs not facilitating passive entry won’t auto-lock your Tesla. Also, you may save the GPS location of your house, go to Locks, and choose Exclude Home. You can enable or disable auto-locking features for every driver profile. The navigation system can be somewhat lenient with the range or precise coverage area. Your car may inadvertently stay unlocked where you don’t want it to be readily accessible.  It isn’t clear how much linear distance or radius Tesla considers as the proximity of your home’s location to execute this function. Some owners reported glitches when their Teslas remained unlocked even when they were several hundred meters away from their house.

While Tesla white seats are stain-resistant, they can still be marked or stained over time. Luckily there are some ways of removing stubborn stains from your Tesla white seats. This makes the upgrade far too expensive for many customers - however, customers who can justify the purchase are usually happy with the results.  Here’s a rough idea of how white interiors for your Tesla will set you back by. Have you ever wondered what happens to a Tesla when its starter runs out of juice?  You can jump-start all Teslas. However, just like any other electric vehicle, Teslas can only be jump-started using a portable car jump starter kit or a vehicle that has a combustion engine. Jump-starting using another Tesla or any other electric car as a donor is not possible. This article will deal with how a Tesla should be jump-started. Additionally, I’ll mention some of the safety measures and facts that every owner of this electric car brand should be familiar with when jump-starting their car. Enjoy finding out more about your favorite electric car!  What Happens if My Tesla Runs Out of Power? Running out of power in a Tesla is extremely difficult to do these days. The jump-starting will be necessary since all Tesla models have a separate battery used for starting the car, among other things. Let’s find out more about this.  Jump-starting isn’t an option when your Tesla’s main battery that’s used to run the car is dead. However, just like any other car on the market, Tesla has a separate 12V battery that’s used to operate various electronics in the car. Instead, Teslas use a separate 12V lithium battery for starting.  Here’s a brief list of some of this battery’s functions:  Starting the engine. Powering the onboard computer and electronics. Running the lights, wipers, locking system, and other auxiliaries.  This list shows that Teslas use a 12V battery for the same reasons regular gas and diesel-operated cars do. The only difference between electric and combustion engines is the way this battery recharges: In combustion engines, an alternator is used to keep the 12V battery charged. On the other hand, Teslas and similar electric vehicles use the power from their main battery to keep the 12V battery charged.  Another similarity between the batteries is their life expectancy. Just like a regular car’s 12V battery, a lithium 12V battery that comes with your Tesla is expected to last three to four years. Using software updates is just one of the ways Tesla tries to extend this period.  Still, the 12V battery in your Tesla can’t last forever. How To Jumpstart a Tesla One of the potential reasons why your Tesla won’t start is a dead battery. As already explained, despite being a fully electric vehicle, all Teslas have a separate 12V lithium battery, just like most conventional cars. Similar to combustion engine cars, there can be multiple reasons why your Tesla’s battery ran out, including: Not running the car for an extended time. Extremely cold or extremely hot weather. Leaving your headlights or any other power-using features on. The age of the battery.  Whatever the reason, there are only two potential solutions to the problem at hand:  Order a new car battery, which is easier but more expensive.Jump-start your Tesla.  Before opting for a jump-start as the solution, all Tesla owners should be aware that this can be a dangerous process. To prevent injury and damage to the vehicle, it needs to be done the right way. If you would like to see in detail info on how to Jump-Start A Tesla, you can read this article that I wrote. Tesla Jump-Starting Procedure Despite the common belief that starting an electric car in this way isn’t possible, jump-starting a Tesla is a fairly simple procedure. In fact, it’s the same as jump-starting any other car.  Here’s how everyone can do it in just a few simple steps using nothing more than a pair of jumper cables and a donor car or a portable jump-starter: 1. Open Your Tesla’s Frunk (Front Trunk) If your battery is empty, you obviously can’t open the frunk using the interior touchscreen or your keyfob. The best solution here is to use the manual release lever. Most Tesla models have one of these levers located under the front passenger’s glove compartment (or under the wheel if you’re in the UK). However, what happens if you can’t open the doors to get to the frunk release lever?  Here, the procedure of opening the frunk gets a little trickier. Have no worries, and follow these instructions to open the frunk in a Model S:  All you’ll need to do is get behind the wheel well and pop off the protective covering toward the front of the car. Inside, you’ll find a string that you should pull to release the frunk hatch. You’ll need to repeat the process for both sides of the car.  If it doesn’t seem clear, you can always refer to YouTube for help. Lift the Plastic Panel Located Between the Frunk and the Windshield This is the easy part; all Tesla models have a plastic panel that covers the battery and the fuse box. You should have no difficulties spotting it once your frunk is open.  The cover is easy to remove. Simply grab the side that points to the windshield and lift. Once you’ve removed the panel, your Tesla’s 12V battery and the fuse box should be visible.  Some Tesla models have further jump-starting instructions labeled under the panel. If your car has this label, simply follow the instructions. Tesla owners who can’t locate this label should proceed to the rest of the steps below.  The only thing remaining to do in this step is to remove the protective cover over the battery. There’s a latch that’s holding it in place, just like with the larger plastic panel. Some force might be necessary to unlatch the cover. 3. Connect the Jumper Cables This part of jump-starting a Tesla works just like any other car. Here’s how the procedure is done properly: First, connect one end of the red jumper cable to the positive (+) terminal on the jump starter or the donor car. You should then connect the other end to Tesla’s 12V battery positive terminal. 
Second, connect one end of the black cable to the donor car’s battery negative terminal and the other end to your Tesla’s 12V battery negative terminal.  On a somewhat related note, I also wrote a similar article where I discussed the 12v Outlet in the Tesla Model 3. Why is it so important to connect the cables in this way?  It’s crucial not to allow the red and the black cables to touch when one end of them is connected to the battery. The contact between the two cables will cause sparks, and it can potentially damage the car’s electronics.  Also, keep in mind that it’s not necessary, or even recommended, to attach the negative jumper cable to a metal part of the Tesla’s frame, as some sources might suggest.  4. Leave the Cables Alone for a Minute Here’s another step that you should follow when jump-starting any car, even the non-electric ones: Leaving the cables connected without starting the car with the dead battery is an essential part of the jump-starting process, and you should never skip it. By leaving the jumper cables on, you will allow your Tesla’s 12V battery to charge, which is extremely important with a battery that has gone completely flat.  The manufacturer underlines that it might take several minutes for the 12V battery to gain enough power to wake up the touchscreen.  After giving it a minute or two, you can proceed to the next step.  5. Start Your Tesla Start the Tesla as you normally do and leave the car running. Make sure that the 12V battery can gain charge from the battery that’s powering the car.  If it isn’t the case and your Tesla needs to be jump-started again, your best bet is to go out and buy a new 12V lithium battery as soon as possible. The specifications for the battery are listed in your car’s owner’s manual.  While useful in emergencies, jump-starting isn’t something any modern car can handle with no issues, let alone when done repeatedly. Getting your battery checked on a yearly basis is recommended for this reason.  6. Disconnect the Cables in Reverse Order The last step when jump-starting a Tesla, or any other car, is to disconnect the cables. This procedure should be done in reverse order compared to connecting the cables. Here’s how it should go: Start by removing the black cable from the Tesla’s negative battery terminal and then remove the other end from the donor car or the jump starter. Then, take off the jumper clamp from the Tesla’s positive terminal, followed by removing the same cable from the other end of the line. 7. Put the Protective Trims Back in Place The final thing to do when jump-starting your Tesla is to put everything back in its original place. After learning how to remove the trim, this part of the jump-starting process should be easy to do. Here’s what you’ll need to do: Return the plastic covers to their original position. Make sure that the 12V battery’s protective cover is back on before securing the plastic panel that covers the entire battery and fuse box area. The larger plastic panel might need a stronger push.  Voila, you’ve successfully jump-started your Tesla. Even though it might seem logical that you can use the process described above in reverse order and use a Tesla to jump-start another car, the manufacturer advises against this.  According to the manufacturer, jump-starting should only be used as a last resort since the process can damage the car’s electronics. This recommendation doesn’t only apply to Tesla, but rather to most modern cars.  The key element in jump-starting any car is whether the donor car’s engine and the battery can handle the stress of starting another car.
As Tesla explains in their owner’s manual, there’s simply not enough power in the Teslas’ batteries to start another car safely, especially one with a combustion engine.  Unfortunately, it applies to all Tesla models, from the top-of-the-range Model X to the significantly more affordable Model 3.  Some Internet sources claim that jump-starting another car with a Tesla is perfectly safe, but I would trust Tesla over them and strongly advise against this.  Conclusion By following the simple steps listed in this article, you can jump-start any Tesla model in just a few minutes. I believe that a significant section of car owners would’ve switched to Tesla if they had their fears about charging allayed. Internal combustion engine enthusiasts still need convincing, but at the moment, I see a future dominated by electric vehicles. You can hop on the bandwagon now, given that Tesla has made considerable strides in improving its charging systems.  Tesla wall charging is the most effective charging system for your Tesla. However, there are other alternatives that are convenient yet slower systems you can use to charge your Tesla, including JuiceBox. Its portability is an advantage over the Tesla wall charger. If you’re wondering whether there are alternatives to Tesla wall charging, read on! This article will answer your questions and offer extra insight into all aspects of Tesla charging.  Tesla Home Charger vs. Others In the trunk of your newly delivered Tesla, you’ll find a level one charger. The level one charger plugs into any 120-volt socket you have at home and provides the power to an adapter, which connects to your Tesla using a charging cord.  The level one charger comes with all Teslas. However, it’s hard to find anyone using it. The output you can get from it ranges from 2 to 4 miles (3.2 to 6.4 km) of range per hour.  If you only use your Tesla for short errands, the level one charger can work for you. Plug it in for twelve hours overnight, and you’ll have 24 to 60 miles (38.6 to 96.6 km) of range, depending on your Tesla Model.  Let’s face it, 24 to 60 miles (38.6 to 96.6 km) per day won’t be enough for everybody. Tesla offers an alternative for an extra $35.  Give Tesla an extra $35, and the company will deliver a level-two charger, which uses a 240-volt outlet, so you’ll need an electrician to install the outlet with its circuit breaker.  Tesla wall chargers are unrivaled in their effectiveness. However, you might need an alternative charger, such as a JuiceBox, especially if you own other electric vehicles. Wait until you learn about the Tesla Wall Connector.  The Tesla wall connector is the fastest and most futuristic Tesla charger you can install at home. It connects to a dedicated 240-circuit and delivers the most miles of range per hour of any home charger (using a 60 amp circuit breaker). It delivers between 30 to 44 miles (48.3 to 70.8 km) of range per hour of charging.  Tesla home charging differs from other chargers in that you can only install a level one and level two charger at home. Level 3 chargers, which use 480V circuits, aren't available at home.  This YouTube video by Terry White will offer you a better understanding of Tesla home chargers:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fifbPSafCPE JuiceBox vs. Tesla Charger Tesla recognizes that you won’t always have a Tesla charger in the vicinity when your car needs charging. Therefore, the company sends over a J1772 adaptor for charging using third-party level 2 charging stations.  One such charging station is the JuiceBox charger. It doesn’t differ much from the Tesla charger regarding charging power, but the pair have distinct differences.  Some Tesla users complain that at 18 feet (5.5 m), a Tesla wall charger’s cord is too short. The JuiceBox, on the other hand, comes with a longer 25-foot (7.6 m) charging cord.  I wrote a detailed article about the Juicebox vs Tesla wall charger and what you need to know. Go have a look! Portability is perhaps JuiceBox’s biggest advantage over the Tesla wall charger.  See, you have to hardwire the Tesla wall charger into your circuit. Meanwhile, the 32 amp and 40 amp variants of the JuiceBox charger plug into a 240-volt socket.  Therefore, you simply unplug the JuiceBox charger if you want to move houses.
You’ll need an electrician to unplug your Tesla wall charger before you move, though.  It’s worth noting that the 48 amp and 50 amp versions of the JuiceBox charger need hardwiring. Also, these versions hold no advantage over the Tesla wall charger other than the length of the charging cable.  The JuiceBox is the charger to buy if you own electric vehicles from brands other than Tesla. If you only own — and plan only to own — Teslas, stick with the Tesla wall charger.  Alternatives to Tesla Wall Connector There are plenty of alternatives to Tesla wall connectors that you can install at home. The JuiceBox that we discussed above is one of them.  The brands that make chargers that rival the Tesla wall connector are: ChargePoint Grizzl-E Siemens ClipperCreek JuiceBox  The brands vary in terms of cord length, price, and connectivity, but they offer around the same charging power as a Tesla wall connector.  Remember that you’ll need the J1772 adaptor to charge your Tesla using a third-party charger. Tesla provides one for you, so make sure to keep it safe. Best Tesla Home Charger The best Tesla Home charger is the Tesla wall connector. It’s the fastest Tesla charger available from Tesla. For the best output, pair the charger with a 60 amp circuit breaker.  The maximum output amps you’ll get from a 60 amp circuit breaker is 48 amps. Best Home Charging Station for Tesla The Tesla wall connector also provides the best home charging station for Tesla.  Its futuristic design looks fantastic on your wall. It’s also easy to use and designed specifically for Tesla.  Some Tesla critics opine that the 18-foot (5.5-meter) charging cord is too short. However, the charging cord works perfectly for any Tesla currently on sale.  Best Level 2 Charger for Tesla You really can’t go wrong with the Tesla wall connector.  It’s the best level 2 charger for Tesla available on the market. Tesla recommends it as its most convenient and fastest level 2 charger.  The wall connector has added benefits, including Wi-Fi connectivity, enabling it to receive updates from Tesla.  Most Powerful Tesla Home Charger The Tesla wall charger takes another victory. It can charge a Model 3 at 44 miles (70.8 km) of range per hour of charging. The slowest it charges is 30 miles (48.3 km) of range per hour of charging (for model X and model 3 Standard Range).  Tesla caps the model 3’s Standard Range charging rate at 30 miles (48.3 km) per hour using alternating current chargers. Level 3 chargers, which use direct current, can charge at much higher rates.  Aftermarket Tesla Wall Charger  We’ve established that you don’t need a Tesla wall charger to charge your Tesla.  There are plenty of aftermarket wall chargers available, each with its set of advantages and disadvantages. The J1772 adapter provided by Tesla facilitates the use of an aftermarket wall charger.  Say you have a Tesla Model 3 and a Chevrolet Bolt EV; which would be the charger to purchase? You’re better off with an aftermarket wall charger. It’ll charge your Tesla and Chevy.  Can Tesla Use Other Chargers? Charger compatibility is another issue that plagues the electric vehicle world. Some argue that brands should make their chargers available to all electric vehicles.  Tesla can use other chargers to charge. The J1172 adapter from Tesla allows you to charge your Tesla from non-Tesla chargers. However, you can’t use a Tesla charger to charge other vehicles because Tesla is the only brand that uses a unique plug design. Tesla superchargers are perhaps the most effective electric vehicle chargers available.
However, the super-fast chargers only connect to Teslas.  Elon Musk stated Tesla would make the superchargers available to other electric vehicle brands in 2021. The cars would require a special adapter — which currently isn’t in production — to use a Tesla supercharger.  Tesla UMC vs. Wall Charger Tesla UMC (Universal Mobile Connector) is the standard charger that Tesla sends over with your Tesla. It plugs into your 120-volt socket and uses a 15 amp breaker.  The main difference between a Tesla UMC and a wall charger is that the UMC is much slower than the wall charger. For instance, using a 15 amp circuit breaker, the wall charger will charge your Model S at 7 miles (11.3 km) of range per hour. The UMC with a similar breaker adds 3 miles (4.8 km) of range per hour.  Keep in mind that Tesla recommends that you use a 60 amp circuit breaker with the wall charger. A wall charger plugged into a 240-volt output using a 60-volt circuit breaker will add 34 miles (54.7 km) of range per hour to your Model S. If you would like to find out more about Tesla UMC and its Alternatives read this article that I wrote. At an extra price, Tesla offers you a slightly more powerful UMC. The NEMA 5-20 plugs into an ordinary 120-volt socket and charges a Model 3 at 4 miles (6.4 km) of range per hour.  The extra cost is only worth one more mile of range per hour.  You are better off installing a wall charger at home and keeping the UMC in your car for emergencies. Tesla offers the same advice.  Tesla Destination Charger vs. Supercharger Tesla has put up an extensive array of public chargers to provide fast charging for Tesla owners away from their homes. Owners of businesses such as hotels install destination chargers for their guests. They charge between 30 to 44 miles (48.3 to 70.8 km) of range per hour. Tesla installs superchargers at various locations, majorly on busy routes. These 480-volt chargers add between 140 to 175 miles (225.3 to 281.6 km) of range within minutes. Plugging in your destination charger as you have a long dinner or stay overnight at a hotel will add plenty of range to your Tesla. However, it won’t help much if all you need is a 30-minute coffee. A supercharger, on the other hand, will add significant range in just half an hour. Tesla Urban Charger vs. Supercharger You can tell the difference between an urban charger and a supercharger by their locations. You’ll find urban chargers in urban parking lots, while superchargers are generally located in charging stations away from urban areas.  The urban charger maxes out at 72 kW, and the supercharger provides a maximum of 120 kW. However, a supercharger can deliver 60 kW if another Tesla plugs into the same charger. An urban charger provides a constant flow of 72 kW.  Tesla Wall Charger vs. ChargePoint The ChargePoint is another level 2 charger you should consider when looking for Tesla wall charger alternatives.  The Tesla wall charger and ChargePoint will charge your vehicle at a similar rate. They both connect to 240 volts, but the wall charger needs hardwiring while the ChargePoint connects to a NEMA plug.  The ChargePoint comes with a longer cable and works with all-electric vehicles. The Tesla wall charger comes with a shorter cord and works only with Teslas.  Tesla Wall Charger vs. Nema 14-50 Tesla provides the Nema 14-50 as an alternative to the UMC. The 14-50 plugs into a 240-volt socket that you need to have installed by a technician, along with a 50 amp breaker.  The Nema 14-50 charges are faster than a UMC but slower than a Tesla wall charger. For instance, it’ll charge a model S at 23 miles (37 km) per hour of charging. A Tesla wall charger will add 29 miles (46.7 km) per hour of charging using a similar 50 amp breaker.  The advantage of a Nema 14-50 is that it's portable. However, you need a special 14-50 socket to use it.

Tesla Wall Charger vs. Mobile Charger The mobile charger comes in different varieties, from the slowest UMC charger to the fastest Nema 14-50.  No mobile charger can match the Tesla wall charger in terms of charging speed. The wall charger is also quite a machine to behold.  The mobile charger’s ace in the hole is its portability. You can carry whatever version you have and plug it into a compatible socket.  Difference Between Tesla Home Charger and Tesla Wall Charger The difference between a Tesla home charger and a Tesla wall charger is that the wall charger is permanently fixed to the wall and charges faster than the home charger.  As a precaution, carry the home charger in your car as you embark on a journey. I recommend that you invest in the Nema 14-50 and use the UMC as a backup.  Conclusion If all you own is a Tesla, you’ll be better off using Tesla’s wall charging system.  Consult your electrician before you install a Tesla wall charger to get the correct circuit breaker for your charging system.
