Perfect Fit
Tumblr media
PAIRING: Doctor Strange X Reader
WORD COUNT: 1438
WARNINGS: Just fluffity fluff fluff fluff
SUMMARY: Stephen wants to spend the morning in bed.
A/N: Not really proof-read because I cringe when I write fluff, but I'll do it tomorrow.
It’s been a while since Stephen’s been home in the morning. Most of the time he’s busy with whatever it is he actually does in the Sanctum these days now that Wong's the Sorcerer Supreme. You didn’t hear him climb into bed last night, so waking up to his arms around you, fingers intertwined with your own, is a more than welcome surprise.
Still groggy from sleep, you press a kiss on his hand before turning to face him. Your movements cause him to stir and he slowly blinks his eyes open.
“Morning,” you whisper, a soft smile on your face.
He groans and nuzzles his face into your neck, mumbling, “Morning breath.”
Of course.
You chuckle and begin to roll out of the bed, “Well, yours doesn’t exactly smell like a bed of roses, hun.”
He smiles and grabs onto your arm to stop you from getting out of bed.
“Stay? Please?” he asks, his voice still husky from sleep, “You know I’m only joking.”
You easily slide out of his hold and head for the bathroom, “Stephen, if I couldn’t tell when you’re joking, do you think we would’ve made it three years?”
"Eight if you count snap years."
You turn to him with a cocked brow, "What makes you think I didn't date other people?"
Stephen sits up, a smirk playing on his lips.
"Would you like me to play all those embarrassing voicemail messages you left on my phone during those five years?" he says as he reaches for his phone on the nightstand.
Your face drops and your cheeks begin to heat up. "You said you'd delete those."
"Those messages are basically you telling me how much you love me in like a thousand different ways," he puts the phone back down, "I'm never losing them."
You struggle to fight the smile forming on your lips. Even though he teases you about it, you can still remember how moved he was when he first heard those messages. He stayed up most of the night listening to them and as much as he could help it, he didn't leave your side for weeks after, wanting to be as close to you as possible.
“Please, come back to bed. Just for a few minutes."
“Hang on, I'm just brushing my teeth,” you continue heading for the bathroom , "You could do with some minty freshness too if I'm honest."
When you turn the handle of the bathroom door and open it, you’re immediately hit with a blast of ice-cold wind that nips at your skin and sends goosebumps up your arms. You can see the edge of a cliff in the distance with a steep drop off, and the sky is misty-grey. On the ground, the grass is dewy and wet from the cold.
With a heavy sigh, you close the door and turn to face Stephen, one hand on your hip and the other on the door handle. He’s sitting up now, his hands clasped over the duvet as he watches you.
“Stephen?”
“Yes?”
“Fix the damn door.”
He looks at you like he has no clue what you’re talking about, but you can see that mischievous glint in his eyes.
“There’s nothing wrong with the door,” he says in the most innocent voice he can muster up. Then in the next second he flashes you a grin and winks.
You want to stay annoyed at him, but he’s too charming to resist.
“Fine, I’ll come back,” you say as you walk back to the bed and climb in, “But only for a few minutes because your morning breath might actually kill me.”
He chuckles and pulls you in close as you settle in next to him. You immediately rest your head against his chest, one hand taking his, and the other sliding around his waist. You’re never more comfortable than when you’re cuddled up to him, listening to his heartbeat while you lay in comfortable silence.
You close your eyes for only a second when you feel something land on your lap over the duvet. It's a small bottle that rattles when you pick it up.
"Mints," you chuckle as you open it and pop one in Stephen's mouth and another in yours, "You know these'll only last so long, right?"
"Like I said; I only need a few minutes."
He has a suspicious grin on his face, but despite your confusion, you don't ask him about it. There's clearly something up his sleeve.
"I got you something yesterday."
"Did you?" you ask almost absent-mindedly as you trace the scars on his fingers with your own.
He loves it when you do that. His hands are more sensitive than the average person, so your soft touches against his skin are not only soothing – they send shivers down his spine.
"Mhm," he nods as he begins gesturing with his sling ring.
A small portal opens and something falls out, right into Stephen's outstretched hand. He opens his grip and you freeze when you see what he's holding.
Nestling in his palm is a dark-blue, velvet box.
You glance up at Stephen in shock then back to the box.
"Stephen?"
"Yes...?"
"What is that?"
He hesitates before offering an answer, "Earrings?"
You can feel the smile on your lips growing even though your heart is in your throat.
Then he opens the box to reveal a diamond ring.
You suck in a sharp breath. "I don't think it's safe to wear a rock that big on your ears," you joke, trying to keep your cool.
He chuckles softly and moves the box closer to the two of you. His hand are shaking, and he's keeping his eyes on the ring, unable to look at you. He's always that way when he's particularly nervous. You rest your head against his shoulder, hoping the contact will calm some of his nerves – and your own.
"I was walking around last night, trying to find the right words to go with this ring," he says, "All I could come up with is that generic shit you hear in wedding vows and Hallmark movies."
"They're pretty romantic though."
"Yeah, I guess," he sighs as he rests his head against yours, "But we're always honest with each other, so I can't lie and say that you're perfect."
You narrow your eyes and frown, "Weird way to convince someone to marry you."
"But I'm not lying when I say that you're perfect for me."
You turn to face him, your heart bursting with happiness, and press a kiss on his jaw. He looks at you and smiles, pressing his lips to your forehead.
"I'm a big believer in fate these days," he says, finally looking into your eyes, "And you're the only person I've ever met who...fits, you know? And I don't mean physically, I mean like–"
"Mystic shit."
He chuckles again and nods. "Mystic shit."
He gazes at you for a few seconds, his eyes filled with nothing but warmth and adoration, and you swear you've never felt more loved than in that one moment.
"Saying 'I love you' doesn't convey enough anymore. Not with you," he says, "You've said it in a thousand ways and I wanna say it in a thousand more so..." He brings the ring right between the two of you and holds it up, "Will you? Marry me?"
You're surprised by the sincerity in his tone. It's a genuine question he's asking, as if he truly doesn't know what your answer will be. His beautiful blue eyes are searching yours for any hints, and you can see that he's waiting with baited breath. That is when you know without a doubt that he's all you'll ever want.
You crack a smile as you raise a hand to cup his cheek, running your fingers through his curls and back down to his jaw.
"Seeing as you believe we're mystically fated to be together, I'm kinda stuck with you now, aren't I?"
He laughs in that pure, non-sarcastic way that he does when he's full of joy. It melts your heart and leaves you mesmerised by the sight of him. And it's so infectious that you can't help but join him.
He removes the ring from the box, and with shaky hands, slips it on your finger. You almost can't believe it's real as you lean your head against Stephen's shoulder and admire it with him.
"This could blind a man," you whisper, dazzled by the way it sparkles in the sunlight.
Stephen chuckles and kisses the top of your head.
"Only the best for you."

Shang Chi FLUFF (Pregnancy series)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Side note: This is just a little cute scenario that randomly popped in my head. Hopefully it reads just as good as it played out in my head)
Storyline: Shang Chi has become more than a regular guy, he’s a hero and a father. But sometimes they get mixed together...
(This takes place after the ten rings, Shang Chi arrives back home from saving the universe)
Characters: Reader, Uncle Wong, and Shang Chi
I did not proof read so please excuse my grammar and misspelling.
“Can you say da-da?” Shang Chi carefully pronounced his words. His son's big round eyes looked straight into his while chewing on his fingers.
Shang Chi sat on the couch with his baby boy squirming in his lap. The baby cooed as if he understood every word Shang Chi said. “That’s okay we’ll work on it, I know you’re going to be a big talker like your mom” Shang Chi smiled and placed his son on the floor to play.
The front door opened and you struggled your way inside with several bags of groceries.
“Hey I’m back home” You placed the bags on the kitchen table. Your son crawled toward you to be picked up.
“Awh and how was my little man? Did you give daddy a run for his money?” You embrace him and place him on your hip.
“He’s going to be a mama’s boy I can feel it” you rummage through the fridge for some baby food with your baby on your hip. Shang Chi bent down to clean up some of the baby toys around the floor.
“Nah he’s already said da-da” he jokingly retorted.
“What?” You wipe your head around surprised.
Before you could respond, a golden ribbon sprouted in the middle of the room in a big circular dimension. Wong stepped out of the circle into your living room. “Oh well hello guys it looks like I came just in time for dinner” Wong sarcastically commented. “What's going on now?” Shang Chi's face grew serious. You scurried down the hall to place your son in his bedroom inside his playpen so you could focus on the dilemma that would possibly be on the horizon. Your son without a care in the world played with his toys.
You walk back to the front of the house to rejoin the conversation.
“Do you have the rings?” Wong asked.
“Yes they’re in our bedroom, why?” Shang Chi slowly walked backward toward our bedroom.
“We need to find out if there are more of a powerful entity inside them” Wong followed close behind him.
“Are we in danger?” You added on.
“No, not from what I’m aware of,” he responded down the hall. Your eyebrows furrowed as you watch them go down the hallway. Shang Chi entered our bedroom and reached inside the corner of the closet on the floor. His red bookbag was unzipped without a ring in sight.
Shang Chi’s face grew pale searching inside the bag.
“I swear they were just in here” he began to panic.
“looks like we got a thief” Wong flipped out his pager to send a message. “You guys need to get out of here NOW” Wong urgently warned.
“(Y/N) get your stuff we have to go!” Shang Chi yelled from the bedroom and quickly paced straight into his son’s room. You frantically ask what was going on and caught Shang Chi going in the baby’s room. You quickly followed in a panic state expecting the worst.
You and Shang Chi stop in your tracks and see your son slobbering on one of the ten rings. The rest of the rings glowed in a golden hue floating around the baby. You should’ve known he had once again crawled out of his playpen by himself. Shang Chi sighed in harsh relief and put his hands on his hips.
“Wong, we caught our thief!” he shouted without breaking his gaze from his adorable son. You silently laughed and shook your head. Wong rushed inside the room with his guard up ready to attack. Within seconds he realizes the scene and cackles.
“Welcome to my world” Shang Chi chuckled while retracting the rings on his arms, and takes the last ring out of his baby boy’s mouth.

10 years ago, I actually had a job dressing up as Spider-Man for kids birthday parties. I’ll never forget this one birthday boy- his name was Trevor, and I don’t want to say anything bad about him, but let’s just say he was a real Trevor.
He kept kicking my shins and screaming “You’re not Spider-Man! You’re not Spider-Man!” Look, I don’t know if you’ve ever been kicked by a 7 year old while wearing a $30 Walmart Spider-Man suit, but it will break you. It will break your spirit.
But it also lit a fire under me, and I don’t know where he is now, but Trevor, if you’re watching, I just want to say…

A/N: Thank you for the request, friend! I'm sorry i'm so slow. Just been swamped by many things in ten different directions. I hope you like it.
Summary: School works has been a bit stressful for you. Shangqi just knows a way to cheer you up.
Warning: None. Just fluff and happy Shangqi being a lovable idiot
🎤🎤🎤🎤🎤🎤🎤🎤🎤🎤
“You’re just too good to be true”
Your head perks up from your laptop as you are working furiously to finish your class assignment. Your face slowly cracks into a small smile at the sound of his voice.
“Can’t take my eye off of you”
Shangqi sings as he winks at you subtly, smiles like a damn, adorable fool that he is. He lays his head on the table beside you, gazing up into your eyes as he continues.
“You’d be like heaven to touch,” he sings as he brings your knuckle to his lips.
I wanna hold you so much.”
Then you find yourself giggling like damn fool when he pulls you to your feet.
“I love you, baby,
and if it’s quite alright,
I need you, baby, to warm the lonely night”
Shangqi twirls you around before he catches you in his arms. You let out breathless gasps as your palm pressed flat against his chest. Your gaze to meet his warm liquid brown before he continues, his arm is now around your waist, holding you close to his body.
“I love you, baby
trust in me when I say”
You find yourself giggling in his arms as he sways you around the small apartment, unable to contain the feelings.
“Oh, pretty baby
Don't bring me down, I pray
Oh, pretty baby
Now that I've found you, stay
And let me love you, baby”
Shangqi pauses as he leans in closer now, you can feel his breath fanning your skin. His brown eyes flutter to meet yours.
“Let me love you,” he speaks the words out at the last part before placing a soft, chaste kiss on your lips, making your heart flutter.
“Wow, where is that coming from?” you ask, unable to hide your giddiness.
“Just thought you needed a break.”
“Hmm, yeah. That was nice,” you say as you drag your fingers on his chest. “Thanks, baby.”
“Of course, anything for my girl,” he says before he winks at you. “Now, you need to finish that, while I get the dinner ready. Sounds good.”
You nod eagerly before placing another kiss on his cheek. “You’re the best.”
Shangqi just sorts of smiles bashfully before he rubs the back of his head. “Yeah...yeah, I know that.”

One Big Family
Dad Shangqi x Reader
A/N: Greetings from your resident fluff writer! Decided to come back for one good old domestic Shangqi because who doesn’t love domesticity! This fic can be seen as a prequel to <You’re the best to me> where little Xiayi is three years old here! As always, enjoy! Likes/comments/reblogs are greatly appreciated!
Genre: PG-13
Warnings: Tooth rotting fluff. Reader supports Shangqi through a little self-doubt.
(Allow me to use this gif again because I don’t know why… but I think it’s such a Dad look on him? In a good way of course😉)

***
You wake up to the light that was peeking through your curtains. Shifting in your shared bed, you reached out for your husband only to find that he wasn’t there.
Blinking the sleep away from your eyes, you sit up, registering your surroundings. Where did Shangqi disappear to?
A loud clunk could be heard from the kitchen. Removing the blanket, you trudged down the steps, sounds getting louder.
‘Baba look!’
Your husband chuckles, ruffling Xiayi’s bob hair. ‘That’s good baobei, keep doing that.’
You quietly made your way into the kitchen where the father-daughter duo were intently focused on cooking up a storm. Xiayi was sitting on a high chair, mixing a bowl of batter that was placed in front of her. For a three year old, she had great motor skills, minus some of the batter that landed on her chubby cheeks.
Shangqi checks on the eggs before turning his attention to his baby girl. Chuckling, he removes the bowl from her high chair. ‘Did you leave this for dinner later?’ He refers to the excess batter on her face, blowing a raspberry into her tummy.
‘No baba! Pancake for mama!’ She looks at him, expression stating the obvious. It was as if Shangqi was looking at a mini you.
It was time you made your appearance known. ‘Really? For me?’ You slip behind them, giving a peck on his cheek.
‘Well when did you arrive?’ He holds Xiayi in one arm, bringing you closer.
‘Couldn’t stay in bed when you were making such a delicious breakfast could I?’ You plucked Xiayi out from his arms, nuzzling your nose with your baby. ‘Did you have a good dream baobei?’
Xiayi giggles, making grabby motions to wrap her little arms around your neck.
Shangqi watches the scene fondly, unsure that all this was real. If it was a dream, he didn’t want to wake up from it.
The ding from the oven signaled that the pre-made hash browns that he snagged from the supermarket yesterday were ready.
Maybe he did need a wake up call. Being the absent minded man that you grew to love, Shangqi reaches for the tray - with his bare hands.
‘Babe!’
‘OUCH!’ Before you could warn him, his hand jerks back, nearly dropping the tray. The sound startles Xiayi, her eyes widening.
‘Baba hurt?’
You led him to the sink, immediately rinsing the area with cool water.
‘Baba’s ok,’ your husband reassures Xiayi who proceeds to be preoccupied with the plastic plate in front of her. He watches you carefully attending to the burn, dabbing the washed area with a napkin.
‘Better?’
He nods, cradling his larger hands in yours. ‘Sorry,’ he apologizes. ‘Got carried away seeing the two of you.’ You waited patiently as he plated the food onto two ceramic plates.
‘It’s crazy but even after all this while… I wonder if I deserve all this. I know, I know,’ he defends himself seeing that you were about to retort back. ‘Sometimes I just have these… worries.’
You knew what he was implying. Shangqi didn’t exactly had a normal childhood. He barely repaired his relationship with his sister and now he finds himself as an Avenger - having Gods, Sorcerers and even Eternals as colleagues? Fighting off world threats?
He didn’t want to put you or Xiayi in any danger. All he wanted was to give his daughter a normal and happy childhood.
‘Hey, look at me.’ Shangqi’s brown ones look into yours. You were going to shut down this man’s insecurities of not being a perfect father once and for all.
‘If I had a choice, I would still choose you again. Besides, I don’t want Xiayi to have a “normal” childhood.’ You quoted using your two fingers. ‘I want her to live a life that she won’t regret. One that she’ll be proud of. And who better to show her that than her father?’
He sighs, knowing that you had a point. You were always right. Just then, the doorbell rings.
‘Plus, Xiayi would remember all the amazing times that her many Aunts and Uncles spent with her!’ You beamed, going to get the door. It was a Sunday and every once a month, that means it was personal time for you and Shangqi.
You open the door to see a familiar sorcerer, holding a large bag from a departmental store.
‘Wong! Uh,’ you craned your neck into the driveway. ‘I thought it was Katy’s turn today.’ Letting him in, you lead him to the kitchen.
‘It is. Katy’s running late. So I offered to come until she gets here,’ Wong informs you gruffly. ‘Besides, I felt bad missing Xiayi’s birthday last week. Strange and Mr Parker almost set fire to the sanctum’s library.’ He frowns in disapproval, remembering the incident.
The sorcerer always came across as strict and straightforward whenever you met him. No funny business. However, there were always exceptions…
‘Xiayi! Your uncle is here!’
You shrugged at Shangqi who caught your eye, mouthing the words Katy’s late.
‘Shangqi,’ he doesn’t forget to address your husband gruffly before turning his attention back to Xiayi who’s now eyeing the bag in his hand eagerly.
To Xiayi’s delight, Wong reveals the content in the bag - a huge carrot plushie that was half the size of her.
‘This is to always remind you to eat your veggies young lady,’ he sets the plushie beside Xiayi who thankfully has been cleaned up from the morning batter as she smashes her face into the poor carrot.
‘Well then,’ Shangqi clears his throat.
‘Yes, yes. Your daughter will be in good hands. Do not worry.’ Wong dismissively waves his hand, preparing to usher the two of you out of the kitchen. ‘Go! Have some time together!’
‘Just remember-’
‘That her nap time is half an hour after lunch and the ingredients for lunch and dinner are already prepped and in the fridge,’ Wong rattles off. ‘I got it. Now go!’
As you were being led out the kitchen, you turn towards your daughter. ‘Be good Xiayi! Mama loves you!’
Xiayi waves at you from the high chair, using her new found carrot toy before the kitchen doors closed.
______
‘You think she’s ok?’ Shangqi asks you over the table at a Dim Sum Restaurant. You were grateful that Shangqi gave boundless of love for his daughter but he he was just worrying unnecessarily at this point.
‘I’m sure she’s fine babe, Katy just texted me about an hour ago.’
He nods, looking back at the menu again. Just then, you receive a beep on your phone, face turning into a grin.
‘Shangqi, look at this!’
The photo showed his baby, off in dreamland. She was dressed in sleepwear that his Aunt Ying Nan had made for her, clutching onto the carrot that he saw earlier.
Along with the photo was a message - Wong nearly cried.
‘See? You have nothing to worry about.’
Before he can open his mouth, you beat him to it. ‘Yes, I’ll send you this photo too. I’m not surprised your whole photo album is filled with her pictures.’ Not that you were complaining though.
And neither did he. Having lost the feeling of how a family should feel like years ago, Shangqi thought that he would never experience it again.
He was so grateful. Grateful for the people that he could count on when he needed it the most. Checking the message that you had just sent him, Shangqi does quick work.
He saves the photo, setting it as the wallpaper of his home page to remind him of his one big family.

Knock. Knock. Knock.
Shang-Chi glanced down at his wrist watch then looked at the door. “Who could be knocking at this hour?” He asked himself, going for the door anyway.
He ran his fingers through his hair, as he twisted the doorknob. I know I payed my rent for this month so I couldn’t be my landlo—
His immediately went wide. “Y/N?” His voice giving away how taken aback he was.
“Hey…” You greeted, a sheepish smile on your face. A foreign emotion painted on your face, gaze heavy towards him.
“What are you—“
But before he could finish his sentence, you advanced towards him, pushing the door closed behind you. Your hands cupping his face, smashing your lips against his, sending the two of you backwards.
Shang-Chi sat up immediately. His chest heaved, screwing his eyes shut as he slowly gaining composure from being awoken up from his dream. “What the fuck?”
He took a deep breath, resting his closed fist against his forehead. Ever since he left your apartment he couldn’t stop thinking about what he did—about you.
When you took off, guilt crept all over his body which was instantly replaced by fear. It’s like something possessed him at that moment. The two of you had been friends since forever and he didn’t want to ruin that by stepping beyond the boundaries of your friendship.
But he almost did. It made him feel even worse because you were going to a date you have been looking forward to. That’s so messed up. He buried his face on his clammy hands.
He didn’t know what came over him but seeing how comfortable you were with him, how good you looked earlier, and the necklace… His heart warmed.
The necklace, he was surprised you still had it. He gave it to you years ago for your graduation ceremony along with a small bouquet of the actual flower. It was just a cheap one. It was from one of your trips to the thrift store you had dragged him with. It had dainty pendant of your favorite flower so he bought it when you were busy burying your head in the rows of clothes.
Apart from that, he couldn’t take his mind away from how you responded to him—how you didn’t pull away. How your eyes closed, but for face crystal clear with anticipation. How your fingers reached for him.
Shang-Chi shook his head, dropping half of his body back to bed. For half an hour, he twisted and turned, trying his best to get back to sleep, but it was no use.
He couldn’t help but wonder how your date was going.
He groaned the. jumping out of bed. His apartment felt like it was closing in on him. His thoughts suffocating him. Taking a shirt off his closet, he decided to go out for a walk, to contemplate about what he had done and maybe get himself some peace of mind.
But when he opened the door, he was surprised to see you—standing in front of his apartment, hand in the air, mid-knock—still in the clothes you wore for your date.
You mirrored the look on his face, not expecting him to be making his way out at this time.
Am I still dreaming? Shang-Chi blinked.
Your hand dropped to your chest, fidgeting with the pendant that dangled on it. “Uh….” You trailed but struggled to find any words, so you grimaced. Although Shang-Chi couldn’t discern if it was disappointment or what.
You bit your lower lip, shifting from one foot to the other. “Are you going somewhere?”
She’s real. She’s here.
He cleared his throat.“Just wanted to get some fresh air.”
“Can I come with you?” You flashed him an awkward smile.
Shang-Chi thought for a second. Is this really a good idea right now? I haven’t sort out the emotions I’m feeling. What if I make another mistake? What if I actually scare her away this time? What if—God, now I’m the one who’s overthinking.
You raised your brows, puckering your lips as you waited. When a minute passed and he still hasn’t said anything, you broke the silence. “It’s okay if you don’t want to. I—”
He shook his head.
“Don’t be ridiculous. Let’s go.” He stepped out, locking the door quickly then hooked his arm around your shoulder, drawing you away from his apartment.
What the hell. A little voice echoed in his head.
The two of you decided to get some boba and settle to sit at the park on top of a small hill nearby. The park was empty apart from a handful of late night joggers and cars passing by.
“So… how did your night go?”
Warmth spread through your cheeks. “I’d be lying if I said it well… or that it went terribly…” You started.
“What?” Confusion flashed in his eyes.
“I didn’t went through with finishing the date.”
“Why?”
“Why? You’re really asking me that?” Disbelief in your tone. “Because someone decided to confuse me the last minute. And I couldn’t stop thinking about him and what happened back in my place the whole time. Terrence seemed lovely but I don’t think he deserves to have a date who’s mind is flying most of the time.”
“Look, Y/N, I’m sorry.” He screwed his eyes shut, face painting with guilt. “I don’t know what had gotten into me. I—I didn’t mean to—“
“You didn’t mean to kiss me?” You rewarded him a small smile, slight disappointment pooling in your chest.
“I didn’t mean to confuse you.”
You pursed your lips.
Heart hammering in your chests as the sounds from the city filled the chilly San Francisco air, emphasizing the sudden silence between the two of you. For a moment, you and Shang-Chi fixed your gazes on city lights before you.
You sighed, flashing a genuine smile this time. “Maybe… Maybe I’d like to stay single for a while.” Averting your eyes back to him.
He met your eyes, making a facial expression as if telling you, “We both know that’s not true.”
Your shoulders sank. In defeat, you spoke your mind. “The whole time I was with Terrence, I wished it was you. I wished it was you I was on a date with. I wish it was you who was sitting across the table from me.”
A chuckle escaped your lips despite the odd weighted feeling on your chest because of his intensifying gaze.
“Can I tell you a secret?” His tone serious.
You cleared you throat. “Yeah?”
“Come closer.”
Your eyes roamed around the park before darting back to Shang-Chi. “We’re the only ones here.”
“Come closer.” He repeated, ignoring your statement.
You angled you head to the side in confusion but leaned in, his hand reaching out to cup your jaw as you did. Your eyes bulged out of its sockets when his lips met yours.

“When my dad sent me to find the man who killed my mom, I told you I couldn’t go through with it…”
Shang-Chi voice echoed in your head.
“…I lied.”
It’s been three hours since he left you at the lake dumbfounded—since he told you the truth. To say that today has been a lot is an understatement.
There’s too much to take in, too little time to let it sink in.
It’s not everyday someone would tell you that they killed a man, especially someone you knew for the past 10 years.
You sat up, taking a deep breath.
That wasn’t the Shang-Chi you knew. Shang-Chi who held your hand through your highest and lowest. Shang-Chi who always had a smile of his face and always put one on yours, never failing to make you laugh. Shang-Chi who was always gave you the warmest hugs whenever you needed it and even when you don’t.
You had spent the last decade with him more than anybody else.
But ever since you rode the plane with him to Macau, you couldn’t deny that at some point you wondered if you even knew him at all.
Your eyes flickered towards the open bathroom door. The warm light illuminating the dimmed room you were in. Through the opened door, you could see him standing in front of the mirror. His hands firmly gripped the sink, head bowed, shoulders falling up and down in a control manner—he was calming himself.
Fully aware of your own heart racing, you bit your lip then stared down at the metal band on your finger, feeling the cold metal on your fingertips.
“I can get used to this everyday.” He whispered against your skin. He was holding you in close to him—one arm around you shoulders, one hand on the waist. The side of his chin resting on your temple as your face was buried on the crook of his neck.
“Yeah?”
He nodded.
It was just a normal day. Both of you did not have work so the two of you kept busy—running errands, cooking, tidying your apartment. Some would say, it was nothing special, boring even.
Maybe so, but you couldn’t be happier doing it with the person you love the most.
Not everyone is fortunate to find the person who they can do the plain everyday stuff worthwhile. But you, you were one of the fortunate ones.
And you’d give anything to have this every day.
“Marry me? Please. Let’s get married.” You asked, the last sentence almost demanding. Shang-Chi’s roared out a laughter, his whole body shook around you.
Pulling away to look at him, you feigned a frown. “Are you seriously laughing at me right now?”
“I’m sorry.” He ran a hand over his face as if it will smooth down the huge smile of his face. Giggle still slipping past his closed lips.
He sighed, rolling over—almost on top of you. His sudden intense eyes fixated on yours, heat began to spread on your cheeks then all over your body. He leaned down to brush his lips against yours, one arm stretching towards his bedside table to grab something from the drawer.
When he pulled away from the kiss, he showed you a ring. Your eyes bulged out of their sockets.
“I can’t believe you beat me to it.” He smirked, shaking his head at you. “Here I was, planning something grand for when I popped the question. You know, rose petals on the ground shaped like a heart, big MARRY ME letters, candles. And you just asked me like if I wanted to get boba or something?”
You ignored his teasing, your blurred vision moved from the gold ring to his soulful eyes.
“I don’t need anything grand. Just you and me in each other’s arms. This is special enough.”
He sighed in relief, slipping the ring your finger, but his eyes his still holding yours. “Thank goodness. I don’t think Katy will be able to keep it shut any longer. Every time she sees you it’s like she’s going to start ringing wedding bells.”
The two of you laugh, melting into each other’s embrace once more.
You got up, walking towards the bathroom. Your arms crossed in front of your chest, leaning against the door frame. Remaining in your position until he noticed you standing behind him.
When he did, he stood up straight. “Sorry, did you needed the bathroom?”
You shook your head. You could tell he wanted to bolt out of there but before he could step away, you were already snaking your arms around him. His body tensed, but relaxed slightly after you rested your cheek against his bare skin.
“Did my confession finally did it?” Shang-Chi whispered. You placed your hand over his chest allowing you to feel the quick beating of his heart. It almost made you worry until he added, “Did you change your mind?”
You took a second before answering. Feeling the fast rhythm of his heart, memories of your last 10 years together flashing before your eyes.
“My mother always told me I should never make a decision at the height of my emotions…”
Shang-Chi stared at you through the mirror, hesitation in his eyes. Waiting if this was an opening to a breakup speech.
“…But my answer was something I already made up before we even went to Macau. If anything, it only made me even sure.”
You felt his breath hitched. Finally allowing his fingers to slip between yours then clutched your hand over his chest like his life depended on it.
“Why? If—If I told anybody what I just told you out there, they’d be running away screaming before I could even finish my sentence.” His voice raspy.
“Well, I’d like to think I’m not just anybody, at least to you.” You planted a kiss on his bare shoulder. “I know you better than anyone. Everything I learned when we came here, only made me understand who you really are. I know you’re not that person anymore…”
Shang-Chi screwed his eyes shut, melting against your embrace.
“No, it wasn’t even you when you did it. Your father was wrong for putting that burden on your shoulder. It wasn’t your fault your mother died. You were young. He was grieving but his children were too. It wasn’t only him who lost someone. You and Xialing lost both your parents because when your mother died, you also lost your dad. Instead of being there for his children like your mother would have probably hoped for, he trained you mercilessly and put you out on a hit for revenge. He treated Xialing like she didn’t even matter. That’s so messed up. No child should ever be put to into the situation that both of you did.”
His eyes opened, they were bloodshot. The tears in them threatening to spill but Shang-Chi remained silent.
“It wasn’t on you.”
“I’m sorry for lying. I got scared.” His head angling, tipping back against yours. “Then seeing my dad lose his shit when he lost the love of his life, I got terrified because what if that happened to me? I’d probably do the same thing.”
You pursed your lips, slipping your hand that was covered his out of his hold. His eyes flickered to yours. Your hands switching places so yours were on top of his now, fingers threading around his to give it a squeeze, waiting for him to continue.
“But you know what I realized?”
Your eyes snapped back to the mirror to meet his eyes, arching a brow.
“No matter what I do he’ll always be a part of me. I hate it but I cannot do anything about it and I have to accept that.” He sighed. “He’s a part of me, but I’m not my father.”
“That’s right.”
There are things in our past we are not proud of—things we couldn’t change, no matter how much we wanted to have done something differently. What matters now is we redeem ourselves by acknowledging and accepting it our mistakes. We cannot change our history, but we have control over our present.
He lifted your hand to his lips, giving it a kiss. The two of you shared a moment of silence, basking on the warmness emanating from each other’s body.
You didn’t know how long you stood there, but even if it was an eternity you wouldn’t mind. You loved Shang-Chi, both his best and worst as well as his past and present because it’s all a part of him. It’s all what makes him the person you embraced in your life.
“So, you’ll still marry me, right?”
“Uhuh.”
“Are you sure?”
“Why do you keep asking? Maybe you’re the one who’s not sure.” You teased.
Shang-Chi let out a low chuckle. “I’ve never been so sure in my life.”
“Good. Fair warning though, if you marry me, the deal is sealed. You’re stuck with me forever.”
You tried to cling to him like a koala to be funny, but he broke from your hold and turned to face you, grabbing you by the waist to pull you closer. You arms wrapping around his neck, your legs around his waist as head leaned towards yours and pressed you against the wall. The side of your noses touching, his minty breath hitting your lips. “Isn’t that the point? It’s why I asked you in the first place. Well, technically you were the one who asked first.”
“It’s settled then.” The corner of your lips tugged upward as you cupped his face in between your hands. “Just gotta make sure we make it out alive tomorrow.”
“Yes, ma’am.” Shang-Chi responded, dipping his lips to yours.

“…the Edema and excess potassium triggers the release of the excitatory neurotransmitter glutamate.” You read out loud trying to make sense of the chapter you were reading.
You had no idea how many times you’ve read the same sentence, but it’s not registering to you anymore. Your fingers reaching up to your temples, massaging them to ease the headache you have been battling for quite a while. You closed your eyes, however, what only registered to you was how tired you were from all the reading.
It feels like the time is going too fast but you barely made progress. You felt the prickly sensation behind your eyes, chest tightening as frustration built up in your chest when you caught a glimpse of your still unfinished reading you have to go through.
You tried to calm yourself with a breathing exercise you learned for whenever anxiety gets to you, but as you did tears started streaming down your face. A sob escaped your lips. As soon as you did the back of your hand flew against your mouth to keep your cries silent.
That’s when you felt a pair of arms wrapped around you. The familiar warmth enveloping you. “What’s wrong, baby?” The genuine concern in his voice made you cry even harder.
You shook you head, unable to say anything. Shang-Chi pulled out the extra chair beside your study desk and sat beside you. Angling your swivel chair to his side for you to lean on to him.
He let your head rest on the crook of his neck, rubbing your back for comfort. Your arms snaking around his torso. Shang-Chi remained silent, allowing you to let out the overflowing emotions you were bearing.
He hugged you, planting kisses on your temple as he patiently waited for you to calm down.
“I’m sorry.” You pulled away when you did, wiping the remnants of your tears from your cheek. His hand reaching up your face to help you. “I didn’t mean to wake you up.”
He shook his head. “It’s fine.”
You smiled at him, giving him a kiss on the cheek. Shang-Ch’s eyes expressing nothing but worry. “Thank you, I needed to let that out. Go back to bed.”
His brows furrowed. “Y/N, it’s almost two in the morning. You should sleep.”
“I can’t. I won’t be able to sleep because I’m going to end up thinking about all the things I will leave unread. I just needed that short break to bring my focus back. That’s all. I’m good now.” You assured him.
But the worried look on his face remained. Scrunched brows, he stole a glance at your desk where your books were open, a few scratch papers sprawled, and a huge empty coffee mug beside your computer.
He sighed. “Did you at least eat some dinner?”
You stopped. Oh. Forgot about that part.
A yikes expression painted your face. “Does coffee count?”
“Y/N!” Shang-Chi exclaimed in disbelief. “That’s it, we’re getting you some food.” He stood up, grabbing your had as he went for the door.
“Wait, let me just grab a page.” You reached for your desk but Shang-Chi swiftly carried you and bolted towards the common kitchen.
You shrieked.
“No. If you going to take a break, you’re going to take an ACTUAL break. No reading.”
“As if I have a choice.” You raised a brow as you smirked at your boyfriend.
The compound was quiet. No sign of life as the two of you passed by the hallways. Surely, the others had been asleep by now.
“What do you want to eat?” He asked, placing you down. Your bare feet meeting the cold tiled floor so you hopped on the kitchen counter to sit.
“Wow, I get a free ride AND a personal chef? What did I do to deserve this?” Dramatically putting both of your hands to your chest.
He chuckled. “Well, your personal chef can only make ramen.” He opened the top cabinet. “And dumplings.”
“I’ll take the dumplings please.”
“Good choice. Right away, madam.” He curtsy, scurrying to get some hot water boiling on a pot.
-
“10 minutes.” He announced while glancing at the clock on the adjacent common room.
Shang-Chi made his way to you, standing in between your legs as they swung against the marble counter. You hooked your arms around his shoulder, his snaking behind your back, hand clasping together to trap you as if you’ll go away somewhere.
“Thank you. You’re so sweet.” You cupped his face, thumb soothing his cheek.
“Hmmm. You’d do the same.”
You leaned in, your noses touching. “Yeah except you’re better at managing your time.”
He chuckled, lightly pressing his lips against yours. You felt dizzy as he leaned your foreheads against each other.
“What would I do without you?”
Shang-Chi lightly brush the tip of his nose with yours, then peppered light as a feather kisses on your lips. Leaving you wanting more.
So, you cupped his cheeks firmer to keep him still, kiss him deeper this time but he only let it last for a second.
You groaned which he responded to with a laugh. Obviously teasing you. You felt frustration building up in your chest again. This time not because of anxiety but impatience.
When you couldn’t hold it anymore. You gripped the front of the hoodie he was wearing to pull him closer. Your heartbeat growing faster and faster by the second. You felt like your body was being ignited as his hands slid up and down your waist, repeatedly making a gripping and releasing motion.
You were at the edge of the counter, moving closer to his body as if there were more space to fill.
Your teeth grazed his bottom lip, gently tugging and sucking on them. You let out a soft moan. Then he locked his lips with yours once more which you responded with enthusiasm.
Now he was taking you seriously, a smile forming on your lips.
“Please, don’t have sex on the counter. We eat there.” Bucky muttered out of nowhere.
“Ah!” The two of you jumped from the sudden voice, causing you to bit Shang-Chi’s lip a little too hard. He pushed you back on the countertop to keep you from falling while he took a step back, clearing his throat.
“I’m sorry, are you okay?” You breathed out a whispered, grabbing his hand. He nodded.
That’s when you realized you’re out of breath, you turned around pulling the collar of your shirt to hide your lips, only to see Bucky who made his way to the fridge to get some water.
You held your breathe while Bucky took his sweet time.
“I think the water dried out from the pot.” He commented then went out of the kitchen without even sparing a single glance at your direction.
“Shoot!” Shang-Chi blurted. Registering to you both the smell of the pot’s bottom burning.

“I should probably give you a piggyback ride.” Shang-Chi offered.
After a night of drinks and karaoke, you, Katy and Shang-Chi finally called it a night. The owner had to practically throw your group out or you wouldn’t even try to leave.
The two of you have just taken Katy home and the gentleman that your best friend is, is now taking you back to your apartment.
You could have taken the bus, however, you would probably be throwing up the whole way if you did. So, walking it is.
“No… no.” You slurred. “I’m fine.”
“Sure.” Shang-Chi held up 3 fingers. “How many fingers do I have?”
“Ten.”
“I’m giving you a piggyback ride.”
“No! Wait! Look, see. See!” You insisted.
Standing up straight you attempted to walk in a straight line.
“Y/N, no!”
But after your third step, you already tripped on your own feet, face nearly colliding with the ground if Shang-Chi had not caught your waist.
“That’s it. Piggyback ride.”
He squatted down. Waiting for you to hang on to him. When a few seconds passed and you haven’t, Shang-Chi looked up.
A frown painted on your face. “But it’s still a long way hooome!” You protested.
He stood up to face you. “What? You think these guns can’t take it?” Flexing his jacket-covered arms to your face.
You rewarded him an ungraceful laugh and a smack on his raised arm. He smiled at your reaction.
“Come on.”
“Fine.” You finally hopped on his back.
“Hold on tight.”
Your arms wrapped around his neck, his warm calloused hands behind your thighs. You let your cheek rest on his shoulder, silently breathing against his ear.
“You’re such a good friend.”
Shang-Chi smirked bitterly. Friend.
Then you fell silent. When he has already passed a couple blocks and you hadn’t said a thing, he assumed you finally gave in to sleep but he was wrong.
“Why don’t you get a girlfriend already?” The question startled him.
He raised a brow at you.
“You’re kind. You’re sweet. You’re strong.” You imitated his flexing earlier.
Shang-Chi chuckled.
“And I’d say you’re pretty good-looking.” You booped his nose.
“You think so, huh?” He angled his head slightly to take a peek at you. “Well.. The person I like is interested in somebody else.”
“What?! What a stupid person then they are!”
“Don’t call them stupid, I like them.” He remarked. “Besides, can’t force someone to like you back.”
You huffed, pouting. “Right. Sorry.”
“What about you? Weren’t you suppose to be on a date?”
“Hmmm.” You thought for a moment. “I feel like I haven’t gone to karaoke with you guys in a long time. So, I cancelled.”
“Glad it was okay with Jackson?”
“Yeah, he was cool with it.”
“You think he’s got a chance?”
You hummed, but did not clued Shang-Chi in if it was a yes or no.
“Who’s the lucky girl?” You diverted the topic, asking him with genuine curiosity.
“I’ll tell you when you’re sober.”
“Promise?” You lifter your pinky finger.
“I can’t lock pinkies with you because you’re going fall but I promise.”
“Okay.”
That’s when you finally fell into slumber.
When Shang-Chi woke you up, you were already in front of your apartment door. He lowered your feet to the ground, allowing you to fish for your keys in your purse.
Your best friend patiently waited for you to come in safely.
“Thanks for taking me home.” You thanked him when you stepped in your open apartment door.
“Of course.” He cleared his throat. “So… um, drink water before you go to sleep.”
You looked at him, eyes softening. “I will.”
Shang-Chi chuckled awkwardly. “Alright. I should go. It’s pretty late, you should get some rest.”
He nodded, about to walk away when you called out to him.
“About what I said earlier…”
Brows raised, he looked at you expectantly.
“I don’t want to commit to Jackson because…” You trailed, whispering to Shang-Chi as if anybody would hear.
“Because I like you.” You giggled, gently patting on his cheek then closed the door behind you.
A thud was heard from inside your apartment. You must have fell, Shang-Chi worried. But he was in too much shock to knock if you were okay.
To say that Shang-Chi was stunned was an understatement.
His eyes blinked rapidly as if a two headed cat appeared in front of him. He stared at your door, unable to move from his position.
He shook his head in disbelief. “She’s doesn’t now what she’s talking about.” But he couldn’t help but smile like an idiot.
As he was about to go, your door creaked, stopping him in his tracks.
You opened the door just enough for him to see you. Now looking more put together as if what you said sobered you down.
“I forgot to say.” Clearing your throat, you smoothed down your hair. “Walk home safely.” A voice too soft escaped from your lips. Something Shang-Chi only heard when you tried to converse with someone you were attracted to.
Shang-Chi gazed at you, amused. He nodded. “I’ll text you when I got home.”
“Good.” You tapped on the door. Pursing your lips as you thought of more things to say.
“I like you too, by the way.” Shang-Chi confessed, taking you aback this time.
Your eyes went wide, a burn rapidly building up your cheeks like wildfire, you answered him by slamming the door to his face.
This time Shang-Chi actually left your apartment building, walking home with a huge smile on his face.
Finally. He thought.

***
You were a bundle of nerves.
Pacing back and forth, you rubbed your hands together. The temperature in the medical bay was comfortable enough, but cold sweat still formed on your palms.
You were standing outside the surgery room with Bruce, who were studying the report from the mission Shang-Chi, Sam, and Bucky had just gone to.
It was suppose to be a simple mission. A simple extraction, but then the terrorist group had been clued in to the arrival of the Avengers and instead of abandoning their hideout. The group had concentrated their men and overpowered the three.
Fortunately, Shang-Chi was able to send a message back at the compound allowing the remaining Avengers to follow for back up.
If the others had been late for a second… You closed your eyes. Not even wanting to think about what had crossed your mind.
“You should have let me come.” You blurted out, snatching Bruce’s attention to your direction. Gaze intently set on the glass separating you from the inside of the operating room.
“Y/N, the two of you haven’t been in good terms lately.” He sighed, lowering his eyeglasses to his nose. “I don’t think it would have been good if I sent the both of you on a mission.”
“I can be professional, you know?” You tried to joke but your voice dripped with bitterness.
“If you would only tell the team why then maybe we could have bargained.” Bruce stood up straight, crossing his arms.
You tried to swallow the lump building up in your throat.
“It’s—it’s personal.” You choked out.
“The more reason we couldn’t let you to go together. We can’t be distracted, especially now that we know how dangerous this group is.” Bruce reasoned. “I understand that its hard for you to share, but if you ever need someone and if you’re comfortable enough to tell, we’re here.” His voiced soften as he gently patted your shoulder.
“I hope you get through whatever it is you are going through.” He added.
It was a serene time at the compound. The night just fell and everybody had just finished dinner and went separate ways to do their own business.
You and Shang-Chi, on the other hand, decided to lounge in your room and plan to have the rest of the night cuddling.
The team had been busy preparing for a mission for a few weeks now and it was nice to have a night off.
The two of you were in bed, legs tangled and arms around each other. Just feeling each other’s warmth. He was little spoon this time.
Honestly, you loved it whenever he asked to be spooned. His face buried on the crook of your neck. Your fingers gently running through his hair, softly messaging this scalp.
You hummed, something that you did when you’re in utter calmness. Then, you felt Shang-Chi peppered your skin with light kisses. His lips trailing your collarbone up to you neck then your ear.
You giggled in response. “Stop! It tickles!”
He replicated your laugh. “Oh really?” Then pressing his stubble-covered face further against your skin and purposely tickling your side. A snort escaped your lips which Shang-Chi reciprocated with a roaring laughter.
“You.. should… really… get… that… stubble… shaved off!” You struggled, wriggling against his tickling.
He stopped, whispering in your ear. “Can I get a hand, then?”
You nodded.
He scooped the back of your knees, the sudden move made you shriek. You wrapped your arms around his neck, clinging to him like a koala as he carried you to the bathroom.
Shang-Chi sat you on the bathroom countertop while he stood in between your legs. You reached for the shaving cream and razor.
He watched you intently as your hands delicately touch his skin, lathering it up with shaving cream. His thumb unconsciously rubbing circles on your clothed waist.
Your fingertips traced the fading scar as a result of his hurriedly attempt to shave few nights ago.
“You’re a literal Avenger and you can’t shave your face without leaving a scratch.” You chuckled as you brought up the razor, applying light strokes to his face. “You should be more gentle when shaving.”
“Uhuh.” He agreed, but sounded like he wasn’t actually listening to you which made you look up. You smirked, he looked like he was in a trance. Deeply submerged in thought, every move you make not left unnoticed.
Shang-Chi remained silent until you finished.
After you’re done, you looked back up and he had the same look on his face.
“What? Is there something on my face?” Brow arching, you looked back to the mirror behind.
“No, you’re face is nothing but stunning.”
You joking rolled your eyes. “Then what is it? Is something bothering you?” Arm snaking behind his neck once more, playing with the tips of his hair.
“I was just thinking…”
“Yeah…?” You trailed.
“I love you, you know that?” He whispered as if you and only you were have the right to hear those words from him. Shang-Chi leaned his forehead against yours. Just like how his mother used to do when he was a child.
Your right hand on his chest, allowing you to feel his rapidly beating heart.
“I love you, too.” You reiterated.
“And there is nothing more I want but to spend my future with you.” Shang-Chi into his pocket and fished out a ring he had bought a 6 months ago.
You stiffened at his hold when he grabbed your hand that was resting on his chest, a gold ring in between his thumb and finger.
“Y/N, will you mar—“ But before he could finish his question, you pushed him away. Jumping down the bathroom counter, you avoided his eyes but not before catching the shock and pained expression in his eyes.
The ring hit the tiled floor, you could almost hear his heart break with it.
Your mind went hay-wired. “I—I—“ You fumbled, trying to think of what to say. But you felt overwhelmed. Instead, you mindlessly stormed out of the room, leaving a distressed Shang-Chi behind.
Since that night, you had been avoiding him. You felt like a coward, scared to face the consequences of your reaction.
After an hour had passed, the doctor came out of the operating room, giving you and Bruce an update regarding Shang-Chi’s state.
He’s stable. He’s going to need a couple days of bed rest, but he’s better. The doctor said.
Setting the temperature you knew Shang-Chi had prefer, you sat down on the single couch beside his bed. Bruce left a while ago to check on the others.
Once he was gone, your vision clouded as you watched Shang-Chi sleep. One of his eyes were swollen, blueish purple bruises littered his face and body, bandages everywhere.
You could physically hear and feel your heart break. It’s not something you haven’t seen before. Being an Avenger, you were sadly used to it, but seeing the person you cherished the most in this condition was even more excruciating than any injuries you have experienced.
And knowing that the last joyous moment you shared ended up hurting him, crushed you.
As moments passed, the tears you have been holding for the last couple of hours poured like waterfall. Every attempts of wiping them futile as each teardrop fell after the other.
You did not realized that you had fallen asleep until you were awaken by a hand, gently stroking your hair to lull you. Struggling to open your puffy red eyes, your rubbed them with your fingertips.
That’s when it registered to you Shang-Chi was awake.
Jolting up your seat, you announced. “I—I’m going to get the doctor.” But Shang-Chi already caught your hand before you could move towards the door.
“I’m fine.”
“But—“ You tried to protest.
“Sit down.” His voice hoarse, slightly tugging on your hand.
You obeyed. Falling silent for a couple moments to gather your thoughts.
“Uh, are you—are you thirsty? Do you want me to get you some water?”
He shook his head ‘no’.
“How about the AC? Do you want me to adjust the temperature?”
“No, the temperature is perfectly fine.”
“How about—“
“Y/N, relax. I’m fine.”
You sighed. “Is—is there anything I can do for you?”
He thought for a moment, your heart thumping in your chest.
“Lay down beside me.” He patted the right side of his bed, scooting over the other side. He grunted slightly as he did.
“I don’t think that’s a good idea.” You muttered as your hard-headed boyfriend did as he pleased.
He stared at you patiently.
“I don’t want to hurt you though.”
He smiled. “You ask me if you can do anything for me. Can you lay beside me? Please?”
Damn you, idiot! You already did! You internally cussed yourself when it registered to you what you just said.
You swallowed. “Uh… um. O—okay. Tell me if you’re uncomfortable, alright?”
He nodded.
Carefully, you laid down on the space he provided for you. Cautious as to not press on any unseen bruises he has on his body.
Your head resting against his shoulder, his right arm wrapping around you. Shang-Chi sighed in relief as if he was thanking all the gods that he was able to feel you again in his arms.
The two of you stayed like that. Your position reminding you of the night he tried to propose. Guilt consuming you as you tried to think of what to say.
The heart monitor beeping on the background.
“My parents…” You started. “They weren’t married yet when I was born. My father told me that they wanted me to be their flower girl when they did and so they waited.”
You smiled bitterly at the memory. Shang-Chi’s thumb drawing circling on your back as if soothing you. “We live in countryside and there was this cliff with the view of the ocean. Every Saturday morning, my father and I would ride a bike to the bakery and the three of us would have a picnic for breakfast on that cliff. We would watch the sunrise and lay there. Just basking in the warmth of the rising sun.”
“It was a special place for our family. So, when he thought of the perfect time, he conspired with me to plan the proposal. It was on that cliff, sunrise, all of my mother’s favorite food. We even baked our own bread. I remember as a child thinking it was the most romantic thing ever. I even had this film camera and I snapped so many photos.” You let out a short chuckle. “They got married, a week after that.”
“But one year passed and things started to change. For whatever reason, they constantly fought. The doors were closed but I could still his screams. My mother trying to shush him. Glass breaking, furniture being pushed over, doors banging. I hid under my blanket, shaking. I couldn’t see what was happening but the sound was enough to shatter my childish heart.”
“Then one morning…” You sniffled, pausing as you muster some courage to continue.
“It’s okay. You can stop if you’re not comfortable.”
You shook your head. “I want to tell you. I never told anyone, but—but I want to tell you.”
“Okay.” Shang-Chi’s arms around you tightened for reassurance. “Whenever you’re ready.”
You breathed in. “One morning, I woke up and I was alone. There was breakfast ready to be cooked in the kitchen. Empty plates on the dining table. Untouched newspaper on the sofa. The front door was open but nobody was there.”
“I felt scared because I knew something had happen. I didn’t know what but I knew there was something going on. I waited and waited and waited but it was almost sunset and none of my parents came back.” Your arm snaked around Shang-Chi’s torso, trying to find solace. He squeezed back.
“So I rode my bike. I went to the cliff, no one was there. But then there’s this nagging feeling that told me go to the edge of the cliff. That’s when I started crying.” You sobbed, hiccuping in between. Your right hand forming a fist, collecting the fabric of the medical gown Shang-Chi had on as you felt like the memory only happened yesterday.
“When I looked down, I saw—“ You choked out. “I saw my mother lying there. As a child, I just thought she was just laying there. Like we always did on the cliff. But something was off so I kept on yelling, “Mommy, get up! get up!” but she didn’t move. If a neighbor passing by hadn’t heard me, my young self would have probably jumped down there to save her.”
Shang-Chi screwed his eyes shut as you broke down in his arm. So much pain radiating off of you.
“The proposal… that was my last happy memory on that cliff. So, when you proposed, the memories came flashing back. How happy my parents and I were and suddenly the image of my mother’s lifeless body. It scared me.”
“I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have put you on that spot. I—“
“No, no, Shang-Chi. It’s not your fault.” Wiping your tears away. “You didn’t know. It’s me who should be sorry. I should have been more considerate of your feelings. I didn’t told you so you wouldn’t understand. It’s your right to be upset.”
“I just wanted you to know why I reacted that way. I want to spend the rest of my life with you, believe me. You… you helped me to love again and I can’t imagine the thought of losing you.” You continued.
“We don’t have to get married.” Shang-Chi whispered. “I can love you without the marriage. All I want is to spend my every waking moment with you. The title doesn’t bother me. If you’re not comfortable with it, we don’t have to do it.”
You smirked, reaching down your pocket, holding up the gold band for both of you to see.
“No, I want to marry you. I want to bury all bad memories and replace it with good ones, ones worth remembering. I don’t want to be shackled to the painful memories of my past.”
Looking up to him, you grabbed his hand. “Shang-Chi, will you marry—”
“Yes.” He answered in a heartbeat, making you chuckled but slipped the ring in this finger anyway.
Your hands softly cupped his cheek as you planted a kiss on his lips.
When you heard of what happened during the mission, it terrified you. That you’re going to lose the man who unchained you from the horrifying notion of love, the man who taught you that you can still be loved, and the man who made you feel again. It shook you to the core.
It’s not always rainbows, but during the storm Shang-Chi was always willing to brave it with you. He never left and that was enough for you to know that you open your heart and trust again.
You pulled away, resting your forehead against his.
“I promise to love you for better or for worst.” He vowed, pulling you in for another kiss.
