The cognac is smooth, but not the top shelf he's used to. His palette had been well-spoiled for the years he'd been running in his deep circles, and Esmé was forever a man with high expectations. He never lowered them for anyone or anything - not in business, not with partners, and certainly not with liquor.

Though he was nowhere near a lush or a heavy-drinker. The moments he did allow himself to indulge were few and far between and now he needed the stress to unfurl itself from the back of his neck. (He was too angry of a man, if he kept it all there eventually he'd snap.)

When the music slipped effortlessly from one song to the next he let himself glance around at his kept company. People here weren't quite the usual. He'd never otherwise be seen with those who preferred electrical tape across their nipples and fishnets for solid shirts, but he couldn't really judge either. Maybe in another life, if he were another person, he'd be the type to lose himself in the music (among other things.) But not this one.

You're super cute.

He couldn't help the wrinkle in his nose for the compliment (a bit back-handed in his eyes.) Children were cute (objectively, he hated them all, personally.) Kittens were cute. Grown men were handsome, if you were classy. But this wasn't a classy place and he was sure she didn't mean the way it stung in slight. For only the slightest of moments he allowed his hand to be toyed with, dropped his eyes to her own playful digits, and found the grin that slowly curled his lips upward to be genuine (a true rarity.)

"That depends on how much you've had to drink. A gentleman never takes advantage of someone whose beyond their senses."

Though she checked the high boxes of his standards, somewhat.

She was beautiful. She was also chaotic (but so was he). Perhaps she'd be good for fun in the moment, but he'd have to keep business away from her. Distractions were bad for business.

He set his glass down and allowed himself another glance around: if she was being watched, followed, if this was some sort of ploy to disarm him ... or if she really had just wandered into his line of sights like a woodland doe before a wolf.

But she didn't quite strike him as defenseless enough for that role. Something with teeth, surely.

With a now free hand he held up his thumb, ring, and middle fingers before her, smirk still present.

"How many fingers?"

               𝐀𝐅𝐓𝐄𝐑  𝐀𝐍𝐎𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐑  𝐒𝐇𝐈𝐓𝐓𝐘  𝐃𝐀𝐘  𝐀𝐓  𝐖𝐎𝐑𝐊,   𝐓𝐇𝐄  𝐂𝐋𝐔𝐁  𝐈𝐒  𝐄𝐗𝐀𝐂𝐓𝐋𝐘  𝐖𝐇𝐄𝐑𝐄  𝐃𝐄𝐒𝐃𝐄𝐌𝐎𝐍𝐀  𝐍𝐄𝐄𝐃𝐒  𝐓𝐎  𝐁𝐄.   she'd  spent  most  of  her  time  there  dancing,   mingling,   and  receiving  free  drinks  from  men,   to  subsequently  disappear  into  the  crowd  after  drinking  them,   never  to  be  seen  again.   she  wants  free  drinks,   not  attention,   and  men  can  be  so  pushy.   ew.   her  interest  simply  isn't  there  for  these  particular  men,   and  although  desdemona  usually  allows  women  to  catch  her  eye,   it  happens  to  be  a  man  this  time.   different  than  the  rest,   from  what  she  can  tell.

               he  stands  out,   is  tall  and  handsome,   and  looks  relatively  well  put  together  compared  to  everyone  else  she'd  come  across.   cutting  through  a  sea  of  warm  bodies,   she  finds  herself  approaching  him  at  the  bar,   and  in  typical  desdemona  fashion,   she  breaks  the  silence  first.   she's  out  nearly  every  night,   and  she's  sure  if  he  was  around  more  often,   she'd  have  noticed  him  before.

               upon  confirmation  that  he  is  indeed  new  around  here,   her  teeth  sink  into  her  lower  lip,   and  she  nods,   blue  eyes  examining  his  features.   business?   she  wonders  what  kind,   but  the  thought  is  brief,   as  she  isn't  one  to  pry.

               ❝ i  like  to  change  it  up  sometimes, ❞   she  tells  him,   moving  to  rest  against  the  counter,   her  tattooed  elbow  pressed  on  the  hard  surface  as  she  leans  closer.   it's  just  so  hard  to  hear,   and  he  smells  so  good   . . .   ❝ frequent  enough. ❞

               her  head  tilts  as  her  gaze  travels  down  his  form,   liquid  courage  allowing  her  to  not  quite  care  about  how  it  comes  off,   and  she  smiles.   he  looks  like  he  comes  from  money.   ❝ you're  super  cute, ❞   she  comments,   perhaps  against  her  better  judgment,   and  one  of  her  hands  finds  his,   fingers  toying  with  his.   forever  bold ──  ❝ do  you  want  to  kiss  me? ❞
