Zulu Time is the time in the Zero Meridian Time Zone, also called the UTC (Universal) time zone, or GMT (Greenwich Mean Time Zone). It is most commonly used in aviation and the military, as a way to sync up operations and reduce confusion when plannign of operations spanning multiple time zones.

Zulu Time gets its name from the military call sign for the letter “Z”, which is Zulu. Each time zone has a letter and number designation. “Z” is the letter designation of the Zulu time zone. It also refers to the number “0”, the number designation for Zulu time (zero meridian time zone).

About Zulu Time and Time Zone Names

How are time zones named? They have many different names depending on who is using the time zone. But first a little background on time zones.

There are 25 time zones in the world, each one separated by 15 degrees of longtitude. Each time zone encompasses a swatch of the globe extending from north to south between two longitude bars 15 degrees apart.

Every time zone has a common name, letter, and number designation. The military uses letters to name time zones. “Z” is the military letter designation of Zulu Time Zone.

Zulu time zone is therefore also represented by the number “0”, or GMT + 0 which is why it is called the zero meridian time zone. It’s common name is either zero meridian time, GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) (referring to the city Greenwich in England), or UTC (Universal Time).

Zero Meridian time is the same as GMT (Greenwich Mean Time). This is the starting point for the universal time zone numbering system. It’s the time zone that is essentially at the 0 hour, because it is the starting point for the other time zones, which are either plus or minus an hour from this time zone.

Each time zone is numbered from -12 through +12. with each number having a corresponding letter designation. If you are smart, you probably have figured out that one letter would have to be left off, since there are 26 letters in the alphabet. You are correct.

Is Zulu Time Used as Civilian Time Anywhere?

Yes. Zulu time is used as civilian time in several countries. Any country falling in this particular time zone, use it everyday. The countries in Zulu Time Zone include London England, Dublin Ireland, some cities in Ghana, Portugal, and all of Antartica.

The civilians in these countries use the 12-hour clock. So, they use Zulu time in 12-hour format. They also refer to their time zone commonly as GMT or Greenwich Mean Time. Only military personnel refer to it as “Zulu Time”.

One of the perks of working in an office is comfortable chairs. Although I’ve worked from home for years, I sat much longer at my desk in 2020 and had back pain to prove it. The Chair for Didactics of Civic Education at the TU Dresden is the only chair with this special focus in the Federal State of Saxony. Accordingly, an extensive task field results.

However, our research is fundamentally focused on the question of how Civic Education can be more inclusive which means: successfully addressing all people. Opportunities arise if you look for example at Civic Education in vocational schools, Civic Education for refugees, or Civic Education in the context of community or social work.

Another field we are working on is tackling the relationship between Cultural Education and Civic Education. The main question we are working on in this field is: What can Civic Education learn from Cultural Education? Some of the issues we are concerned with are whether the museum is a good place for Civics, how we can describe the relationship between politics and theater - but also vice versa, what can Cultural Education learn from Social Studies?

Yet another field of interest results from the specific local situation we are confronted with. Or in other words: In the city of Dresden, one can not ignore the question of how Civic Education can or should be shaped in the context of right-wing populism or extremism.

Install Sourcetree

You can open sourcetree by running installer, if sourcetree is installed it will open the app. Then if you can't find it on your drive - go to task manager, find sourcetree, from context menu pick go for details. If you're in details tab, under context menu hit go to file location. This works for win10. $ git update-index -no-assume-unchanged path/to/file.txt Sourcetree. I for myself think it's easier and 'saver' to use a GUI for git rather than the Terminal - for that reason, I prefer the app Sourcetree. Sourcetree provides the ability to define 'Custom Actions', which can later be easily reused with right-clicking a file or folder. As mentioned, Sourcetree prefectly integrates Gitflow. To initialize a repository for Gitflow you just need to click on the Git Flow button. You should leave the names of the branches as they are and just hit OK. Sourcetree will then create an additional develop branch off of master.

This has been a problem I’ve encounted for a long time. It’s all very well to have your source code in a GIT repository, local or hosted in the cloud, but for a small time developer, finding a solution for a database is a different story. There aren’t too many free or open source methods for doing this.

I’m very surprised that Atlassian hasn’t released a database versioning system yet. There is news on the horizon from another company. I haven’t signed up to them, but it looks promising: https://klonio.com/ This seems like an independent company going ahead with cloud based SQL hosting for source control versioning.

It’s taken me a while to figure this out, research, borrow, copy and steal ideas, but I think this is probably one of the easiest.

I run both Mac and Windows versions of SourceTree, on two computers as well as the newly released beta MAMP on Windows, so we’ll just have to see how that goes (seems ok so far).

This is how to set it up easily.

In the Apple world, hopefully you have all of your hidden files visible, because that will make things a lot easier. You may find this program useful as well, to get the full address of a location: http://bahoom.com/finderpath/

Firstly, find your git repository (where all of your files are located).

You will find in the root path, a path in there called “.git”.

In that path, you’ll also find a path called “hooks”. This is where we will be working.

For example I’ll use this path: /Sweet_Project/www_root/.git/hooks/

You’ll need to edit, create or rename a file called “pre-commit”

In it you’ll need instructions of what to do. For MySQL MAMP (on Mac), you’ll need to have the following:

That is it! It’s the easiest method I’ve found. It’s a pretty crass hack to do, but it’s functional. As I play and find a better way around this, I’ll post updates.

Please note that this just dumps the all of the tables in the database as a text file. Not much else.

You may find problems using this method if you have a large DB and there are lots of changes, or minimal changes that are done to the DB.

As for getting the files for a PUSH, or a PULL, that’s slightly a different story, but should work the same.

I have created a file called post-merge with the following:

exec /Applications/MAMP/Library/bin/mysql -u [USERNAME] -p[PASSWORD] [DATABASE_NAME] < /Sweet_Project/www_root/DB_Backup/database.sql

The post-merge should execute when a pull is done. It should pull the new DB file down and then execute the mysql command and update the database to the current version.

And mark the scripts as executable (if required) using terminal
