We’ve been doing weaving for a few sessions and two of our students finished their designs. They were even able to learn some basic crochet patterns so they could finish the edges. They all love bright colors.

With Mike just back from Japan, we jumped into a Origami Program for Mothers Day. Do you know what Origami is? Its the ancient art or paper folding.
At first, the folding was a little hard but after a few minutes, everyone was folding like a pro. Before we finished the workshop, everyone made an Origami heart and decorated it.

ECMS Heads to Eastern State Penitentiary
On November 7th, students gawked as we weaved and dodged through Eastern State Penitentiary's historic corridors.

Afterwards, we hit the Benjamin Franklin Parkway for a bag lunch, a quick (rainy) game of kickball, and the requisite run up the "Rocky Steps."

ECMS Students at Rutgers Gardens!
Rutgers Gardens in New Brunswick is an interesting place, a space where university researchers and community gardening enthusiasts converge. On October 30th, students from the EducationWorks program gathered together to head to Rutgers' main campus for an on-campus lunch and tour of the illustrious Gardens.

Students prepared for the trip by drafting unique recipes using fresh vegetables, fruits, grains, dairy and protein. For the recipe to be complete, one of each of the components had to be recorded, teaching students about balanced, healthy eating. During their garden tour, students had the chance to seek out the real-life version of their ingredients and even taste some leafy vegetables growing on site.

Children's Programming Coordinator Debbie Henry handed out snippets of greens such as arugula, stevia leaf, and more to eager students taste-testers. Students also had the opportunity to hike the grounds' trails, walk through the research pine forrest, as well as get lost in the now infamous field labyrinth!

EducationWorks ECMS students at Lincoln University
On Election Day this year, a group of 30 or so students from the EducationWorks program at East Camden Middle School took their day off to tour Lincoln University. Students and staff were broken up into teams and given an iPad to engage in a campus-wide photo scavenger hunt.

Items on the list included finding a professor and asking them what subject they teach and what degrees they hold, "jumping" pictures on Lincoln's immaculate football field, as well as finding a freshman and asking them about their major and their hometown. Students also explored the term "HBCU," and learned the significance of Lincoln as our nation's first Historically Black College/University.

At the culmination of the day, students had a unique experience as middle schoolers rubbing elbows and breaking bread with college students in the University's main dining hall. Throughout the day, several students were even heard to say, "this is what I want my school to look like," and "I can't wait until I go to college!" Perhaps the most encouraging product of the day was seeing the middle schoolers speaking with college students, asking them about their experiences, and beginning to really visualize themselves as college bound.
