Do we think Crutchie is afraid of getting sick? I'd imagine that the devastation that poilo caused him coupled with his abandonment issues would mean that he'd freak out whenever he got sick, even if it was something minor. I'm imagining a Crutchie fresh out the Refuge realizing he caught something while he was there and trying to hide it from the newsies because he's scared that if it's polio again that they'll just abandon him like his family did. He treats ever sore throat and every minor fever like the start of his death sentence and at first the other boys think he's dramatic which to be fair they all are, only to be crushed to find out he genuinely thinks that he's going to catch it again and that he'll lose another limb and that they'll leave him. Imagine Jack "I'm willing to go to jail and get jumped and steal and die for these boys" Kelly finding out that his little brother really thinks he's going to die.
