critics of ffxiii kept saying lightning had no emotional range or depth, but in the first two hours of the game you see her struggle with her own desperate need to suppress her feelings. she’s mad at sazh for what he says about serah, she’s remorseful about her own bitterness to serah; she’s sarcastic and glib when sazh tells her the others on the train want to fight back; in the flashback you see her nervous but polite to lieutenant amodar; she’s defensive and protective of serah when they reuinite, and she’s terrified and hurt when she watches serah turn into crystal. like… the whole “lightning has no emotions” thing is clearly (1) said by people who didn’t pay attention to the fucking game, or even play it for themselves, and (2) a dumb meme like “get in the robot shinji.”

shinji very much gets in that robot, and lightning very much does has emotional range and depth–that’s why she’s so fucking angry all the time. i always likened her to the emotional blunting that happens with me and my ptsd + bpd combo. sometimes you just feel so much that it becomes haze and noise, and all you’re left with is anger. therapy has taught me that my other feelings manifest as anger, that i’m not really angry, it’s more that i’m upset, hurt, scared. but anger is a defense mechanism. i feel safer being angry than i do any other feeling. (this trait also carries over into some of my ocs–like nem!! bless her angry heart)

and anger has always been lightning’s defense mechanism. ffxiii’s cast all have their flaws. they all lie to themselves in one way or another, usually just to get them through the day and the troubles ahead. but they don’t lie because they’re cruel or enjoy it, they lie because they’re afraid.

This is something I’ve mentioned before on my main which I know some of you have seen, but I’m gonna piggyback off of this analysis and talk about Lightning as a Sentinel again because this particular role says a lot about her character.

Let’s first establish what SEN signifies for somebody that mains this role (I’m looking at you, Snow and Fang!). Primary SENs are protectors and guardians - to a fault. Snow and Fang are both willing to go extraordinary lengths to keep the people they care about safe, even if it means sacrificing themselves to do so. Self-sacrifice is, in fact, the trademark of a primary SEN.

Watch how quickly Snow is willing to sacrifice himself and become a l’Cie if it means freeing Serah, or how quickly Fang does a face-heel turn if destroying Orphan means sparing Vanille and the other l’Cie a fate worse than death.

Lightning is not a primary SEN. It’s a role that can only be opened up to her very late in the game, after you’ve completed the main storyline. And when it does become available to her, the only guarding ability she can learn is Elude - a move that increases the evasion chance by 50%.
