elliot & josephine

James Taylor’s living quarters are sparse, as if he’s always ready to leave— and maybe he is, unable to shake the knowledge that at any time, this could all fall apart. He wants everything that he loves close to hand, ready to be swept into one backpack so that he doesn’t forget all the pieces of his heart that he carries along the way.

(There’s an old ring; there’s a set of postcards and a stack of letters; there’s a roll of photobooth pictures. There’s an old t-shirt and a set of dog tags. There's—)

Of all the things he keeps, the strangest is an old copy of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. It’s a cheap paperback thing, the kind that would’ve been found in a secondhand bookstore back when they still existed, but what makes it special is the writing inside of it.  

For my Elizabeth reads the inscription, from his father to his mother, given to them on their first wedding anniversary in 1967. All my love, into eternity, your Elliot.
