Winter was starting to melt away into spring, leaving the sidewalks finally cleared save the bundles of melting snow here and there, gathered by plows. It was refreshing, coming back to this transition. To see Hive City melting away it’s frost to reveal temporarily-clean streets and sprigs of flowers peeks between cracks in the pavement. She wasn’t sure how much time had passed, but Aqua was at least relieved to know Hive City was relatively the same.

And, she hadn’t changed much either. Really, it didn’t feel like she had been gone at all, yet the clock on her phone begged to differ. Her caring nature stuck through time passed, spent in darkness and the unknown, so naturally Aqua wanted to lend a hand to those who were newer to the city. Perhaps it wasn’t any of her business, but the wooden sword on the grown mans back was a dead giveaway.

Aqua approached from behind, yet still noticeable from the peripheral.

“Sorry to bother you, but I couldn’t help but notice your sword. You’re new here, right--?” 

She was suddenly cut off by a gust of wind, the mans long white hair quite literally smacking her in the face. She was surprised for a moment, before letting out a soft laugh.

Unknown to Aqua, being asleep for so long... Aqua never truly realized how much time had passed. The grogginess of waking up felt strange, like she had slept too much, yet the alarm went off at 9:30 am like any other day. Her calendar hadn’t changed dates, and her phone laid on her bedside table dead. She left it charging when she left to get some food. The heaviness of sleep making her, for once, too lazy to even cook. Aqua simply felt off.

This was only further proven by her friend Sora’s reaction. Upon seeing the boy she waved with a small smile, blue eyes slightly lidded with sleep-- yet Sora seemed to be overwhelmingly excited about her presence. Aqua took two steps back to catch herself from Sora’s running embrace, yet returned the hug with a small chuckle. She gave his head an affectionate rub before he pulled back.

“It’s alright Sora. I’m happy to see you too-- but you act like it’s been months.” She’d only been asleep for a night... right?

It has to be here. There was no way his eyes were playing tricks. This wasn’t a dream… or a nightmare. No… Sora was awake, and was certain that the person that walk by was none other then the familiar Keyblade wielder who had disappeared a while ago. The memory of her was still kind of fuzzy, but his heart didn’t lie. It was the Aqua he teamed up with to battle monster, the same that fought against the Heartless. There was no mistaking it.

The boy’s thought didn’t catch up to his own action of running out of the store right after her. “Aqua!” The boy calls out, hugging the other’s back, while trying to keep them from falling forward. He was too excited that he didn’t have the chance to fully stop. “This… this is real…” Sora murmurs to himself, hugging her tightly before letting go. He had already miss so many friends… thinking about them now made him miss home. However, to have Aqua here, was like home coming to him.

“I’m sorry-” Sora lets go, stepping back a bit. “I’m just… really happy to see you Aqua.”

Aqua prided herself in being dexterous, dodging anything an enemy threw at her, always keeping balance and never taking a spill that she couldn’t recover from immediately.

Today, she did not.

Exhaustion had finally crept up on the keyblade master after all was said and done. She stretched herself too thin, worked too hard too often, and rarely allowed herself a reprieve from it all. It was sunset and the knight was heading home, her small poochyena right at her ankles, making a game of weaving between her steps. Normally she wouldn’t mind, easily dodging the pup and walking over and around him with ease, but he caught her off guard-- Aqua stumbled, and in an effort to catch herself, grasped a passing strangers shoulder. 

Immediately, Aqua let go and faced the teen with wide, apologetic eyes. Shadow, simply let out a bark.

“I’m so sorry-- I didn’t mean to grab you like that. Did I hurt you?”

Aqua was beat.

Between her job as a teacher (finals week was hectic-- she felt jaded that she was only a homeroom and gymnastics teacher) and trying to continuously find Ventus and Terra while still trying to get a way out of the city... Well it took a lot out of the keyblade master. She was juggling an actual life (she supposed) as well as her previous missions, and while Aqua was used to taking on many tasks at once... well, she was pretty over it. It was a familiar head of spiky brown hair that brought the knight from her tired aimless gazing at a cafe’s small outdoor table. The cup of coffee before her sat half finished and lukewarm, yet she felt no more awake.

“Hey Sora.” Aqua smiled as the teen walked past, catching the brunette’s attention. “It’s been a bit, hasn’t it?”

“You’ve been working too hard and I’m calling a Netflix intervention. Not taking no for an answer.”

“Seems there’s no use in trying to change your mind, Sora. Alright, I give in. But I’m not going to watch another dolphin documentary.”

Restocking on groceries was something that Aqua did in short trips-- never really getting everything at once, but as she needed it. Sure, maybe she should make a list and wait until things were gone, but there was too much to do to set aside a certain day. After all, with all the curve balls that were thrown by the scientists and the citizens alike... she took whatever peaceful moments she could get.

“Cmon, Shadow.” The Kayblade Master patted her thigh gently, beckoning the small pup to follow along, to which she got a happy yip in return. The two continued to walk down the sidewalk while avoiding leftover ice patches now that the snow was melting to make way for spring. She was happy the weather was warming up again. Yet her appreciation for the changing seasons was interrupted by a small boy with a wand in his hand and a polite yet very confused tone in his voice.

“Oh, hello there.” A soft smile came to Aqua’s lips, yet at the young boys question she raised her eyebrows in question. “What’s going on? Well... Today seems to be a pretty calm day so...” Ah-- she stopped there, realization and concern washing over the warrior as she crouched down to the boys level, grocery bags resting on the sidewalk. Shadow proceeded to sniff the boys shoe.

“You’re new to the city, right?” Ah, that was always a confusing time.

For once in his 10 year old life, Angus had absolutely no idea what was going on, but that was going to change quick. He just needed some time to think, which is hard when you’re practically surrounded by seemingly deadly creatures no matter where you go.

Ango examined his new wooden wand. It honestly wasn’t much of a downgrade from his beginners wand at home. Though it was clear at this point that they were serious about his magic not functioning properly and he doubted that his flame cantrip was going to do much damage to a majority of these monsters.

After the menagerie around him, what caught Angus’ attention the most were all of the strange people he saw in this city. They seemed to be managing fine, so his next course of action should probably be to find out HOW. He tried his best to stay in a single area for awhile and just watch the others as they went about their business.

“There. They should be safe enough”

Angus walked up to the stranger with his wand drawn and mustered up his best good boy voice.

“Hello stranger! May I ask you what on EARTH is going on?”

      “Hah, thanks– I’m kind of into it myself.” It’s why she picked the alias, after all. 

          For a moment, she thinks the offer will be refused, but true to form for someone as nice as someone who’s never had a drink has to be, she does eventually accept.           Fun.            “Ahí va; then let’s go! I’ll even pay for it, since it’s my idea.” 

Aqua nervously tucks some hair behind her ear-- was this a good idea? She had to loosen up a bit maybe, plus it was for experience’s sake. She was never really fond of feeling anything other than coherent though.

But she had to be brave, and open to new things. That much she learned in Hive City.

“Oh-- well, we’ll see then. I don’t mind paying.” After all, being a teacher paid fairly well when the scientists didn’t do things like... need rent. “But I appreciate this!”

It was only a matter of time, if Aqua thought about it.

Twelve years in darkness, and before that, losing not only both of her friends, but her master as well. She compartmentalized her emotions too well. Aqua convinced herself that blocking out these emotions, those of sadness and anger towards the events, that it would further her from the darkness. Perhaps she was right, that doing so was what helped her in the long run, allowing her to get through the Realm of Darkness.

But now she was free of that hellish darkness, in a city that had become too familiar to her in the nine-- maybe ten months she resided within it. She met people-- ones with both light and darkness within them, and a few that lied precariously in between.  She laughed and smiled alongside them, refusing to remember the memories that made her so sad. Of Eraqus, and Ventus and Terra. She tried to at least.

But when she was alone, without a distraction to make her laugh, or someone to make small talk with, Aqua was left to her own devices, and her mind would wander. For so, so long she was able to keep her chin up and jaw tight... But now, finally... she let herself go.

Alone in the Sector 03 park, sun setting slowly and reflecting it’s fiery hues on the lake she always visited, Aqua cried. She did not sob or make a noise other than a few choked gasps now and again-- still unable to let herself truly grieve. Crying was never something she allowed herself to do, lest someone find her, worry for her, that she would burden them with her own woes. It wasn’t in her makeup. Aqua convinced herself of that; after all, she was a Keyblade Master now. She should be able to handle anything.

Yet those thoughts fell through the tiny cracks in her heart as tears dripped from her eyes, flushed cheeks painted with the wet trails left behind. There was so much on her mind it was deafening. There was so much to cry over, to cry for, that Aqua closed herself off from the outside world, ignoring her senses as she was overwhelmed with her own sadness.
