This site is about cranes, in particular Coles Cranes and the history of Coles. To see why this site came about see the 'About Site' section. This site will discribe somthing about mobile cranes, the history of Coles Cranes and contain a database with pictuers of most of the cranes made by Coles along with some intresting little technical details. Coles stopped trading in 1984 and and the last working factory closed down in 1998. Coles is now only a part of crane history. This site is dedicated to remembering what was once one of the largest crane manufacturing companies in the world and to those people who worked there.

Works Models and Others Here we take as a starting point the scale models made at the Sunderland works. What these models were for and how they relate to the full sized cranes produced by Coles. These include historical Coles cranes, current types and prototype models.Also we look at toys that have been made based on types of Coles cranes. Here we see Dinky, and other die-cast models, Schoco, Victory and finally hobby made cranes form paper wood metal Lego and Maccano.

Military Cranes Coles first involvement with the military came when they won a tender to make cranes for the Ministry Defence in 1937 the order was for a general purpose self propelled light crane for use with the RAF. This order was for 82 units, a large order at that time. From that time on Coles were almost entirely given over to making the same crane throughout the whole of the second world war. From that time Coles had supplied many types of crane for the army, navy and airforce. Not only to the UK but all round the world. All these crane have been based on their civilian range but built to the much higher military specification required by the services and generally heavier and more reliable systems. This of course made them far more expensive so these cranes often have a very good second had value after the military had finished with them. Left is a brochure about Coles Military cranes this was produced in the 1980. The cranes on the cover are, top - Hydra 180 AT 18T, bottom left - All Terrain Hydraulic Husky At422, bottom right - Jumbo Speedcrane.

Model - EMA Mk1First made in 1937 the continued to be made right up until 1946 when it was updated to become first the Aries then the Argus Mobiles.Developed for the air ministry the EMA (Electro Mobile Aerodrome) is a self propelled, twin axled , four tyred, electrically driven mobile crane with 360 slewing and 3 ton 2.4m jib. One major development of this machine was the non-rigid jib made of welded sections.This machine developed from the 2 ton Mk1 through Mk II, III, V, VI, and VII versions increasing capacities up to the 6 ton Mk VII. Model - EMA Utility Mk1Notes - Lattice Jib 2.4 to 3m Long.The EMA slewing unit was also made as a Utility version for use on suitable lorry chassis. This unit was a stripped down version with the minimal parts necessary to make it work. It was intended for the electrical power to be taken from the truck it was mounted on. This was fed by a cable so the crane had to have a limiter on the degrees of rotation. Where the truck could not provide the electrical power a separate small engine and generator were fitted either on the truck chassis, as in the Matador or bolted onto the slewing unit. During the war this slewing unit was fitted to almost any suitable lorry chassis. Two of the most widely used were the 6 ton 6x4 Thorneycroft Amazon and the 6x6 AEC Matador. Also fitted to the Austin K6 and Layland. Note- there is a photograph in the 100 years book showing eleven Thorneycroft Amazon trucks on a row saying they are fitted with the EMA slewing rig, this is incorrect these are a much later units from 1948 fitted with the Ulysses 6T self contained slewing unit. Model - Slewing Recovery CraneNotes - Coles only made the crane unit for the AEC Militant Mark 3 truck. The crane unit took its power from the truck including hydraulic. It could slew 90 degrees each way rase hydraulically under fill load and extend hydraulicly to about 10 feet. Also fitted with powerful cable hook winch. The crane unit weighs 5 to 5.5T. Model - Hydra AT 18TNotes - Developed for the military, 4 wheel drive. Both Crane and Truck can be driven from either truck cab or slewing cab position. Not armoured but military specification fittings. This was available from the 1970 but was later updated in 78 and called the Coles/Grove 315M MK2. 4 wheel drive 360 Degree Fully slewing with rear cab, joystick controls, 19m reach, 4 x outriggers, axle locks, PAT 150 DS safe load indicator, ZF 6 speed transmission. Hydra Husky 36-40 TSC

Model - Jumbo Notes - In 1982 and 1983 a stripped down version of the Speedcrane was introduced harking back to the Taylors crane hence the name. I was meant to be a fast simple yard crane. Images - 1

Model - Ranger 530 Notes - To make the Husky TSC suitable for extended road use Coles came up with the swing cab. Driving from the normal forward looking position meant that half the drivers sight was blocked by the boom when in the parked position. Developed for the military the answer was to allow the cab to swing 180 degrees to face over the rear allowing free vision. Images - 2

I am one of the ever-dwindling few who still run Logic Audio 5.5.1 on Windows (or at least I did on Win 8.1 before I upgraded to Win 10). I know, I know ... please don't ask (but you can probably guess why).

One more thing - just opening the song under Logic, then closing it and quitting Logic itself is really really slow (probably for the same reason that causes the reported error).

Understanding JDBC Data Sources

In WebLogic Server, you configure database connectivity by adding data sources to your WebLogic domain. WebLogic JDBC data sources provide database access and database connection management. Each data source contains a pool of database connections that are created when the data source is created and at server startup. Applications reserve a database connection from the data source by looking up the data source on the JNDI tree or in the local application context and then calling getConnection(). When finished with the connection, the application should call connection.close() as early as possible, which returns the database connection to the pool for other applications to use.

Types of WebLogic Server JDBC Data Sources

WebLogic Server provides three types of data sources:

Generic Data Sources—Generic data sources and their connection pools provide connection management processes that help keep your system running efficiently.You can set options in the data source to suit your applications and your environment.

GridLink Data Sources—An event-based data source that adaptively responds to state changes in an Oracle RAC instance. See Using GridLink Data Sources.

Multi data sources—A multi data source is an abstraction around a group of generic data sources that provides load balancing or failover processing. See Configuring JDBC Multi Data Sources.

Creating a JDBC Data Source

You can create JDBC data sources in your WebLogic domain using the Administration Console or the WebLogic Scripting Tool (WLST):

JDBC Data Source Properties

JDBC Data Source Properties include options that determine the identity of the data source and the way the data is handled on a database connection.

Data Source Names

JDBC data source names are used to identify the data source within the WebLogic domain. For system resource data sources, names must be unique among all other JDBC system resources, including data sources and multi data sources. To avoid naming conflicts, data source names should also be unique among other configuration object names, such as servers, applications, clusters, and JMS queues, topics, and servers. For JDBC application modules scoped to an application, data source names must be unique among JDBC data sources and multi data sources that are similarly scoped.

JNDI Names

You can configure a data source so that it binds to the JNDI tree with a single or multiple names. You can use a multi-JNDI-named data source in place of legacy configurations that included multiple data sources that pointed to a single JDBC connection pool. For more information, see 'Programming JNDI for Oracle WebLogic Server.'

Selecting a JDBC Driver

When creating a JDBC data source using the Administration Console, you are prompted to select a JDBC driver class. The Administration Console provides most of the more common driver class names and in most cases tries to help you construct the URL as required by the driver. You should verify, however, that the URL is as you want it before asking the console to test it. The driver you select must be in the classpath on all servers on which you intend to deploy the data source. All of these drivers are referenced by the weblogic.jar manifest file and do not need to be explicitly defined in a server's classpath.

When deciding which JDBC driver to use to connect to a database, you should try drivers from various vendors in your environment. In general, JDBC driver performance is dependent on many factors, especially the SQL code used in applications and the JDBC driver implementation.

For information about supported JDBC drivers, see 'Supported Configurations' in What's New in Oracle WebLogic Server.

Note:

JDBC drivers listed in the Administration Console when creating a data source are not necessarily certified for use with WebLogic Server. JDBC drivers are listed as a convenience to help you create connections to many of the database management systems available.

You must install JDBC drivers in order to use them to create database connections in a data source on each server on which the data source is deployed. Drivers are listed in the Administration Console with known required configuration options to help you configure a data source. The JDBC drivers in the list are not necessarily installed. Driver installation can include setting system Path, Classpath, and other environment variables. See Setting the Environment for a Type-4 Third-Party JDBC Driver.When a JDBC driver is updated, configuration requirements may change. The Administration Console uses known configuration requirements at the time the WebLogic Server software was released. If configuration options for your JDBC driver have changed, you may need to manually override the configuration options when creating the data source or in the property pages for the data source after it is created.

Configure Transaction Options

When you configure a JDBC data source using the Administration Console, WebLogic Server automatically selects specific transaction options based on the type of JDBC driver:

For XA drivers, the system automatically selects the Two-Phase Commit protocol for global transaction processing.

For non-XA drivers, local transactions are supported by definition, and WebLogic Server offers the following options

Supports Global Transactions: (selected by default) Select this option if you want to use connections from the data source in global transactions, even though you have not selected an XA driver. See Enabling Support for Global Transactions with a Non-XA JDBC Driver for more information.

When you select Supports Global Transactions, you must also select the protocol for WebLogic Server to use for the transaction branch when processing a global transaction:

Logging Last Resource: With this option, the transaction branch in which the connection is used is processed as the last resource in the transaction and is processed as a local transaction. Commit records for two-phase commit (2PC) transactions are inserted in a table on the resource itself, and the result determines the success or failure of the prepare phase of the global transaction. This option offers some performance benefits and greater data safety than Emulate Two-Phase Commit, but it has some limitations. See Understanding the Logging Last Resource Transaction Option.

Note:

Logging Last Resource is not supported for data sources used by a multi data source except when used with Oracle RAC version 10G Release 2 (10GR2) and greater versions as described in Administrative Considerations and Limitations for LLR Data Sources..

Emulate Two-Phase Commit: With this option, the transaction branch in which the connection is used always returns success for the prepare phase of the transaction. You can use a Single Client Access Name (SCAN) address to represent the host name. When using Oracle RAC 11.2 and higher, consider the following:

If the Oracle RAC REMOTE_LISTENER your data source connects to is set to SCAN, the data source connection url can only use a SCAN address.

Regardless of how physical connections are created, each physical connection in the pool has its own DBMS credential information maintained by the pool. Once a physical connection is reserved by the pool, it does not change its DBMS credential even if the current thread changes its WebLogic user credential and continues to use the same connection.

From the File Explorer toolbar, select the New File button on the hello folder:

Name the file hello.py, and it automatically opens in the editor:

By using the .py file extension, you tell VS Code to interpret this file as a Python program, so that it evaluates the contents with the Python extension and the selected interpreter.

Note: The File Explorer toolbar also allows you to create folders within your workspace to better organize your code. You can use the New folder button to quickly create a folder.

Now that you have a code file in your Workspace, enter the following source code in hello.py:

When you start typing print, notice how IntelliSense presents auto-completion options.

IntelliSense and auto-completions work for standard Python modules as well as other packages you've installed into the environment of the selected Python interpreter. It also provides completions for methods available on object types. For example, because the msg variable contains a string, IntelliSense provides string methods when you type msg.:

Feel free to experiment with IntelliSense some more, but then revert your changes so you have only the msg variable and the print call, and save the file (⌘S (Windows, Linux Ctrl+S)).

Run Hello World

It's simple to run hello.py with Python. Just click the Run Python File in Terminal play button in the top-right side of the editor.

The button opens a terminal panel in which your Python interpreter is automatically activated, then runs python3 hello.py (macOS/Linux) or python hello.py (Windows):

There are three other ways you can run Python code within VS Code:

Right-click anywhere in the editor window and select Run Python File in Terminal (which saves the file automatically):

Select one or more lines, then press Shift+Enter or right-click and select Run Selection/Line in Python Terminal. This command is convenient for testing just a part of a file.

From the Command Palette (⇧⌘P (Windows, Linux Ctrl+Shift+P)), select the Python: Start REPL command to open a REPL terminal for the currently selected Python interpreter. In the REPL, you can then enter and run lines of code one at a time.

Configure and run the debugger

Let's now try debugging our simple Hello World program.

First, set a breakpoint on line 2 of hello.py by placing the cursor on the print call and pressing F9. Alternately, just click in the editor's left gutter, next to the line numbers. When you set a breakpoint, a red circle appears in the gutter.

Next, to initialize the debugger, press F5. Since this is your first time debugging this file, a configuration menu will open from the Command Palette allowing you to select the type of debug configuration you would like for the opened file.

Note: VS Code uses JSON files for all of its various configurations; launch.json is the standard name for a file containing debugging configurations.

These different configurations are fully explained in Debugging configurations; for now, just select Python File, which is the configuration that runs the current file shown in the editor using the currently selected Python interpreter.

The debugger will stop at the first line of the file breakpoint. The current line is indicated with a yellow arrow in the left margin. If you examine the Local variables window at this point, you will see now defined msg variable appears in the Local pane.

A debug toolbar appears along the top with the following commands from left to right: continue (F5), step over (F10), step into (F11), step out (⇧F11 (Windows, Linux Shift+F11)), restart (⇧⌘F5 (Windows, Linux Ctrl+Shift+F5)), and stop (⇧F5 (Windows, Linux Shift+F5)).

The Status Bar also changes color (orange in many themes) to indicate that you're in debug mode. The Python Debug Console also appears automatically in the lower right panel to show the commands being run, along with the program output.

To continue running the program, select the continue command on the debug toolbar (F5). The debugger runs the program to the end.

Tip Debugging information can also be seen by hovering over code, such as variables. In the case of msg, hovering over the variable will display the string Hello world in a box above the variable.

You can also work with variables in the Debug Console (If you don't see it, select Debug Console in the lower right area of VS Code, or select it from the ... menu.) Then try entering the following lines, one by one, at the > prompt at the bottom of the console:

Select the blue Continue button on the toolbar again (or press F5) to run the program to completion. 'Hello World' appears in the Python Debug Console if you switch back to it, and VS Code exits debugging mode once the program is complete.

If you restart the debugger, the debugger again stops on the first breakpoint.

To stop running a program before it's complete, use the red square stop button on the debug toolbar (⇧F5 (Windows, Linux Shift+F5)), or use the Run > Stop debugging menu command.

Tip: Use Logpoints instead of print statements: Developers often litter source code with print statements to quickly inspect variables without necessarily stepping through each line of code in a debugger. In VS Code, you can instead use Logpoints. A Logpoint is like a breakpoint except that it logs a message to the console and doesn't stop the program. For more information, see Logpoints in the main VS Code debugging article.

Install and use packages

Let's now run an example that's a little more interesting. In Python, packages are how you obtain any number of useful code libraries, typically from PyPI. For this example, you use the matplotlib and numpy packages to create a graphical plot as is commonly done with data science. (Note that matplotlib cannot show graphs when running in the Windows Subsystem for Linux as it lacks the necessary UI support.)

Return to the Explorer view (the top-most icon on the left side, which shows files), create a new file called standardplot.py, and paste in the following source code:

Tip: If you enter the above code by hand, you may find that auto-completions change the names after the as keywords when you press Enter at the end of a line. To avoid this, type a space, then Enter.

Next, try running the file in the debugger using the 'Python: Current file' configuration as described in the last section.

Unless you're using an Anaconda distribution or have previously installed the matplotlib package, you should see the message, 'ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'matplotlib'. Such a message indicates that the required package isn't available in your system.

To install the matplotlib package (which also installs numpy as a dependency), stop the debugger and use the Command Palette to run Terminal: Create New Integrated Terminal (⌃⇧` (Windows, Linux Ctrl+Shift+`)). This command opens a command prompt for your selected interpreter.

A best practice among Python developers is to avoid installing packages into a global interpreter environment. You instead use a project-specific virtual environment that contains a copy of a global interpreter. Once you activate that environment, any packages you then install are isolated from other environments. Such isolation reduces many complications that can arise from conflicting package versions. To create a virtual environment and install the required packages, enter the following commands as appropriate for your operating system:

Create and activate the virtual environment

Note: When you create a new virtual environment, you should be prompted by VS Code to set it as the default for your workspace folder. If selected, the environment will automatically be activated when you open a new terminal.

If the activate command generates the message 'Activate.ps1 is not digitally signed. You cannot run this script on the current system.', then you need to temporarily change the PowerShell execution policy to allow scripts to run (see About Execution Policies in the PowerShell documentation):

Select your new environment by using the Python: Select Interpreter command from the Command Palette.

Install the packages

Rerun the program now (with or without the debugger) and after a few moments a plot window appears with the output:

Once you are finished, type deactivate in the terminal window to deactivate the virtual environment.

Our fish tank screensavers have never been more impressive. Over the past 6 months we have added some enormous aquarium videos. The most popular is the shark infested Ocean Tank, which is easily our largest 4K aquarium screensaver. Like all recent releases it is also available as a longer 20 minute version to loop on UHD SMART TV screens, as a kind of manual TV screensaver. We currently offer all new releases in 4K Ultra HD or Full HD.

We now have improved all our Windows screensavers.

All our aquarium screensavers now have:

Sound with adjustable volume (independent of your computer’s volume)

Multiple monitor support (repeat the screensaver on 2 screens)

The option to set a screenshot as your desktop wallpaper

All products in the 4K category can be purchased as a Full HD aquarium screensaver or 4K aquarium screensaver. They self loop every 3 minutes. Older computers may not be able to play the 4K versions. If you have a screen resolution of 1920 x 1080 (or similar) get the Full HD option, if bigger get the 4K Ultra HD option which is 3840 x 2160. Your screens do not need to match the files- the screensaver adjusts automatically to fit your screen.

Update October 2015: We now have a selection of 4K videos and screensavers. This includes a very popular fish tank we we called Coral Garden. The actual screensaver apps are still in Full HD, but new videos can now be purchased in Ultra HD 4K. We have been testing 4K screensavers and have found some older computers have trouble playing them back. We will get a couple of options on the site soon, for those with powerful computers which can handle 4K screensavers (4 times the resolution of full HD).

Aquarium Screensaver Specs

The two screensaver files are around 3 minutes long. They loop automatically for as long as you do not use your laptop or computer. The video files are longer in length at 20 minutes.

Older footage is shot in 1080p. This is known as Full HD, and now we have many in 4K Ultra HD. It will look crisp and clear on any computer or laptop monitor. The MP4 looks great on any TV screen from SMART TVs to HD TVs to old TVs. Most footage is shot to fill your PC or TV screen, we currently have one ultrawide aquarium screensaverfor a more cinematic look (wider shot for 21:9 aspect ratio ultrawide displays). The aquarium video for ultrawide screens in the 3440 x 1440 resolution. Most of our content is 16:9 aspect ratio for normal displays.

The screensaver app file sizes are typically between 100 MB to 200 MB (double for 4K screensavers). This file size allows for fast download speeds and shouldn’t slow your computer down whilst they are running. The MP4 video files are larger at around 500 MB to 1.3 GB .

How to Download and Use Uscenes Aquarium Screensavers

To download the screensavers you just click on the download links you will be shown after paying. You will also have an account so that you can login to Uscenes at any time in future to retrieve your downloads. For the MP4 videos you just click to download then treat like any other video file.

After downloading your aquarium screensaver, locate the file (usually in your Downloads folder), then click on it. This will install the screensaver on your computer just like any other. You will then be taken to a page where you can set the time for it to start running on your device. If you set it to 3 minutes the screensaver will start playing after 3 minutes of inactivity. It will loop continuously until you touch your mouse or track-pad. Newer videos will also have the option of setting a screenshot as your desktop wallpaper.

NOTE: There is no one standard Hebrew font. All Hebrew fonts are not the same. Many have totally different keyboard mappings. When I first wrote this page, they were very non-standard. I think over the last few years, they have somewhat standardized.

Urban Fonts Store This is a place to buy fonts. If you search for “Hebrew”, nothing shows up, but yet they have a page with three Hebrew fotns.

Microsoft WindowsTM – Don’t forget about the simple CHARMAP (Character Map) utility that comes with Windows. It can be found under Start – Program – Accessories, then look around, or try under System Utilities.
