210520 | Dexter Studio, Director Kim Yonghwa, ‘The Moon’ VFX production... Following the box office myth ‘Along with the Gods’

Dexter Studio (CEO Kim Wook, Kang Jongik), a company specializing in visual effects (VFX) and content, has joined hands with Director Kim Yonghwa to create a new universe.

On 20th, Dexter Studio has concluded the supply agreement for VFX content for movie ‘The Moon’. It was revealed that the total order amounted to 6 billion won.

‘The Moon’ is an SF film about the story of a man who was accidentally left alone in space and another man on Earth who is trying to return him safely. Actors Seol Kyunggu, Doh Kyungsoo (EXO D.O.) and Kim Heeae will appear in next film by Director Kim Yonghwa, who created the ‘Double 10M’ myth of ‘Along with the Gods’ series.

Meanwhile, Dexter Studio who had recreated the imaginary universe through VFX in the movies ‘The Wandering Earth’ (2019) and ‘Space Sweepers’ (2021), is planning to once again create a realistic and overwhelming universe based on its own technology know-how. In addition, the company plans to take full advantage of the virtual production studio built in Paju, Gyeonggi province. The virtual production studio is the next generation realistic content production system that can reduce time and cost as well as increase completion of the later part of the production. A Dexter Studio official said “We have established our own technology through the assimilation of high difficulty space sequence VFX production through our past works. You will be able to see further evolution of Dexter’s VFX technology in ‘The Moon’.”

Meanwhile, ‘The Moon’ is set to crank in the first half of the year.

210109 | Cine21 Interview with Director Kim Yonghwa <The Moon>

Pre-production is in progress. Casting of major roles are over 70%. I think the filming of <Silence> should be over when the casting of the remaining roles are complete.

<The Moon> is known to be a desperate and beautiful SF human story of a man who was left alone in space in an accidental accident and another man on Earth who is trying to return him safely. How did this idea come about?

I think there’s only that much I can talk about forgiveness. The visual goal is to create a spectacle where you are able to experience the zero gravity universe.

The character played by Doh Kyungsoo is greatly inspired by a real life character, Jonny Kim. Jonny Kim is the first Korean-American to become a NASA astronaut, and is undertaking Artemis Project mission to explore moon•Mars. Doh Kyungsoo will play a (mentally) strong youngest astronaut just like Jonny Kim.

Why do they go to the moon?

That’s an important question running through this movie. It’s a well-known fact that rare minerals such as “Helium-3” are buried on moon. That's why many countries, including the United States, are diving into research in attempt to mine various resources from the moon's surface rock. South Korea is also aiming to send astronauts to the moon in 2030 and gain space dominance and rights and authorisation to occupy the moon.

The universe is a space that has never been shown in Korean movies before so there will probably be a lot of concerns on how to visually materialise it.

To materialise the visuals, you definitely have to watch it in the movie theatres as it has to be displayed in 4K resolution. I was curious how <Victory> expressed the universe. Whether to film the characters and background (universe) separately or film them together but having to analyse “shot by shot” but I think in order to capture the vast universe, imax camera has to be used. The filming will be filmed by Director Kim Yongho who filmed <The Battle: Roar to Victory> and <The Witch>. There are many grip shots, so the grip team plans to carefully select them. The scenes set is expected to be large.

What kind of movie do you hope <The Moon> to be?

Audio and visually, it’ll be great if (audiences) are able to experience space realistically in the theatres and emotionally, I hope it is a comforting work for all audiences who are having tough times (in their lives). Everyone makes mistakes. I think this movie will be able to comfort us all.

201014 | Seol Kyunggu•Doh Kyungsoo, Teaming up through SF movie “The Moon”

Actor Seol Kyunggu and group EXO member and actor Kyungsoo will team up together in Director Kim Yong Hwa's new film "The Moon."

According to the film industry on 14th, Seol Kyunggu and Doh Kyungsoo have recently decided to appear in SF movie "The Moon”, directed by Director Kim Yonghwa after "Along with the Gods” and are in the midst of coordinating the details.

At first, Director Kim Yonghwa revealed that he would produce "The Moon" as his next work after 2018 "Along with the Gods 2” but it will be set on track after two years.

Seol Kyunggu will play the character of a solitary man at an astronomical observatory on Earth who is accidentally connected to an isolated man on moon in “The Moon”. Doh Kyungsoo will play the isolated character on the moon.

Seol Kyunggu will continue his activities with "The Moon" after Director Jung Jiyoung's "Boys” without rest. Doh Kyungsoo, who enlisted in July 2019 and scheduled to discharge in January next year, has chosen to start "The Moon" as his comeback film. Doh Kyungsoo will be teaming with Kim Yonghwa, following "Along with the Gods”.

D.O. (Doh Kyungsoo) of dance vocal group EXO was the first person in the group to expand to acting.

Q. What do you like abt your room?

A. It’s a pitch-dark place. If there’s light or abit of light anywhere when I sleep, I’ll feel it and won’t be able to sleep. I like that my room is a place where it’s completely dark like that. My room wallpaper is black too cos it calms me. (Laugh) I like it that it’s completely dark inside when I sleep and when I wake up, it’s instantly bright.

Q. Is your room messy w many things? Or neat and tidy?

A. There’s almost nothing in my room. I don’t even have clothes at all. (Laugh) There’s no tv too. There’s only one bed. Because I don’t like the state of anything laying around untidily, I really only have the things I need.

Q. Is there any rules in your room?

A. It is, Do not leave anything behind. Things must be at a fixed position. Everything I see must be tidy.

Q. What’s your plan of an ideal home date?

A. Making something delicious (for that person). That’s it. Nothing special other than that. (Laugh)

Q. What’s the most confident dish you made at home?

A. I made a lot so can’t really think of 1 but... I eat at home sometimes so I make what I want. Menu is different everytime. Btw, I have a cooking licence so if it’s Korean dish, I think I can make most of it. But, I still have long way to go.

Q. If you were to cook for fans, what would you pick?

A. Abura soba! I’m into abura soba these days. I ate it during my Japan trip. How can it taste like this? So I was curious. I know right away it’s soy sauce-based but the oil is different.... I did alot of research and arrived at lard! It’s important to add the fragrance of garlic and scallions, you can’t use regular soy sauce. I’ve tried making with various soy sauce but dashi is good. It could be a lot of effort to make the noodles too. But as expected, it’s fresh noodles. Now I can make it’s exactly similar.

Q. Dish you made that the members like?

A. I have not made it for the members yet but, I think it’s abura soba. I made it for the manager and it was very well received, so I certainly would like to make it for the members. (Laugh)

Q. Which member wants to eat/enjoy D.O.’s homemade food the most?

A. All the members like my cooking. Fried rice has many requests. The trick is to cook it over high heat for a short time with not freshly cooked rice. Use leftover rice. Scallion oil is important too.

When asked if he’ll be able to finish everything on the bowl in one serving because there’s too much Kimchi Fried rice for 1 person, “If I don’t eat this much, I won’t have strength!” said D.O. while carrying the dishes, again showing a different side.

D.O., who debut through EXO in 2012 and has established a solid position as an idol, began his career as an actor with his real name Doh Kyungsoo in 2014. The reason why enlistment of celebrities is of interest is because there was often issues of past celebrities evading the obligatory military service. The public have often seen stars’ efforts that collapse in a moment as they were caught using easy ways or tricks to avoid enlistment.

It is not an easy choice to go through a long period of inactivity in a broadcast•entertainment mechanism where one will soon be forgotten even after a month of hiding. Military Chef EXO D.O. who utilise his hobby

EXO member D.O. enlisted into the military last July through active duty and is currently serving as a military Chef. The official name for the appointment that D.O. took is called “Kitchen Police”. The news that EXO D.O. whose hobby is cooking was revealed to be serving as a military cook, gathered many talks of the town.

200407 | Cooling down of Korea-Japan relations, ‘100 Days My Prince’ melting it

TVN drama 100 Days My Prince is likely to cause a new Hallyu boom.

100 Days My Prince (2018) produced by Ace Story and Studio Dragon will be broadcasted on Japan’s NHK General TV on 10th next month at 11pm. Not only will it play the role of a medium to ease the cooling Korea-Japan relations after the series of provocation of Abe government, but it’s highly likely to emerge as a new Hallyu.

Ace Story representative Lee Sangbaek told Newsis over the phone on 7th “It’s been more than 2 years since Japan’s main network NHK broadcast a Korean drama since “Flowers of the Prison”, adding “It’s meaningful to schedule Korean dramas on Japanese public broadcast when anti-Japanese sentiments are getting worse and Korea-Japan relations are cooling down. Everytime Korea-Japan relations became serious, Japan broadcasting stations used to exclude Korean dramas from their schedules, so you can call it a reconciliation gesture.”

100 Days My Prince was sold at $200,000 (250million won) per episode. Considering the 16episodes, the total is about 4billion won. Above all, NHK is Japan’s public broadcast, which is as meaningful as Korea’s KBS and China’s CCTV. 11pm was also the broadcast timeslot for drama ‘Winter Sonata’ (2002), the beginning of Hallyu, ‘Dae Jang Geum’ (2003~2004) and ‘All in’ (2003).

Representative Lee said “Japan airs Korean drama on cable broadcast first and if the responses are good, they will schedule it on main network.” Adding, “100 Days My Prince schedule too was confirmed on main network NHK after receiving overwhelming explosive reactions after it was broadcasted on cable network CS Channel and NHK BS Premium. It will be aired once a week for 16weeks. I am more looking forward to it since it will air at 11pm on Sunday nights, which is the timing when Hallyu broke out in Japan,” he explained.

“Up till now, not many drama actors appear on historical dramas. This timeslot is watched by many older people but since the main male lead is Doh Kyungsoo, member of idol group EXO, we can also target the young viewers. Not only are the main actors young but the comic elements are also well mixed, so the greatest advantage is that it can be watched by men and women of all ages.”

100 Days My Prince is a 100 days’ romance between the perfect Crown Prince who suddenly got reduced to a useless man Wondeuk (Doh Kyungsoo) and Joseon’s oldest maid, Hongshim (Nam Jihyun). The distinction of the power struggle in the palace at that time was realistically portrayed and the Crown Prince and oldest maid’s marriage gave freshness. Starting with 5% viewership ratings for the first episode (based on Neilson Korea’s National paid households), it obtained 14.4% for the final 16th episode.

It’s the first time that a drama sold by CJENM has been scheduled by Japan’s NHK. Just like “Kingdom” series produced by Ace Story, it may be able to target the world through video streaming on Netflix but it has strategically dominated the Japanese market with CJ.

Representative Lee said “We could have gone with Netflix but we forecasted that it would create a bigger sensation if 100 Days My Prince is exported to Japan since Doh Kyungsoo is a Hallyu Star. We were able to prepare for a long time and increase the level of perfection for 100% pre-production with Studio Dragon. I’m just grateful for Studio Dragon’s aggressive investment. There are still many Japanese customers who are buying the DVDs and CDs. If we break into the DVD market too, it will further ignite the Hallyu fever,” he said, expecting.

D.O. was the best fit.

It was fate to meet him. He himself had a strong desire to play the role. Actually, I had never seen his previous works so I didn't know much about them. When I saw D.O.’s name when listing the finalists, I said, "I want to see him." The moment I met him, I thought he was this person. “I called D.O. but there was Roh Kisoo sitting there.”

While D.O. is a top K-pop star, he has received love calls from many directors as an actor. What is his charms as an actor?

Actually, there are three things that surprised me when we worked together.

One is that he has irreplaceable eyes. I place great importance to the eyes of an actor. D.O. can express tens of thousands of lines and actions with his eyes. The moment when he’s looking at something is great. It's something to thank his parents for. (laugh)

And sincerely, I should say that it's his personality or dignity. He can get along with strangers on set. Regardless of their position, he becomes friends with everyone, whether they are famous senior actors, staff members or anyone else. Everyone will feel very happy when he comes to the filming set every day. It is also the power of the main actor.

Most of all, I appreciate that he can enjoy difficult acting. He couldn't express his feelings well, so there was a scene where we had to reshoot over and over again. I wanted to make D.O. happy too. In the process of trying to capture his emotions, he unconsciously said “Oh, it's fun." I was very moved to see him like that. I could see him growing up while enjoying his work and acting. It was a happy moment.

What kind of scene is it?

It’s a scene of D.O. standing up and crying in a cave. The viewers may think it's a small scene, but it's an important scene that requires very detailed acting.

Please share a valuable scene of D.O. that “You definitely must watch this scene”.

The scene where D.O. and Park Hyesoo, who plays Yang Panrae, dance to David Bowie’ song "Modern Love." On the day of the filming, D.O. came to the studio and said "I want to listen to music.” So I turned on "Modern Love". When I came back from my brief absence, D.O. and Hyesoo were dancing like they were bouncing and entering the world of music in an instant. Running around and falling in love with the music. He kept dancing with a lively feeling all day. The staffs were dancing too. The next day he got a terrible muscle ache and went to see a doctor. (laugh) I hope you’ll enjoy the scene.

I'm curious about D.O.'s bare face as an idol and actor. What’s the percentage of synchronisation between him and Roh Kisoo?

95%? The difference is that Roh Kisoo is a North Korean soldier but D.O. is serving in the South Korean military. (laugh)

Did Jared teach tap dance to D.O. on the filming set?

They would dance tap dance whenever they had time. Noisy already (laugh) I have to prepare for the shoot. (laugh) It was a great honor for the actors to learn the steps from top dancer, Jared.

Dir: It was his own intention to shave his head. I would like to applaud him because it requires great courage for an idol to shave his head. D.O. and Roh Kisoo have high sync rate. Rather than bringing out/imitating (the character), it can be said that the role reflects the appearance of the boy or the rebellious young man in D.O.

— Even during EXO’s tour that was held at the same time as the filming, his feet were tap dancing during the live’s MC that it became a topic amongst fans that “That kid is obsessed with tap dancing.” Did you know about it, Director?

Dir: He started filming period drama right after Swing Kids’ filming ended. At the filming site, he was even tap dancing in flower shoes (shoes with flower pattern). Not just D.O. but other actors too, when going to places during the stage greetings, they were tap dancing at the waiting room or while travelling on the bus. I think everyone’s addicted. Now that D.O. is in the military, I’m worried that he’s dancing in the army. (Laugh)

— It’s impressive that Jared Grimes sent a message on Instagram when D.O. enlisted. There are many D.O. fans in Japan, if it’s ok, please tell us the charms of D.O. who is loved by fellow actors and the movie industry!

Dir: D.O. is loved by everyone, not because we worked together. Despite being a star, he’s someone who can get along with the staffs or co-actors around him like friends. People at that age would want to look cool and even though he still had time before going to army, he said “Bald head is comfortable.” I think he’s someone who has many beauty in the inside rather than the outward appearance. He’s someone who is overflowing with charms. He wants to do a lot and have many dreams, not complacent with the reality of his success, works hard to show good acting in the future and cherishes relationship with the people around him.

This time, we did a filming and interview on the theme of how to stay up all night at home!

Q. There’s an impression of you wearing a lot of calm coloured clothes. What’s your choice of clothes colour?

A. If the clothes is comfortable, I’m not bothered by the colour. (Laugh) anyway, I like comfortable clothes. It’s been like that as it was before but these days I’ve been seeking comfortable clothes that I don’t even wear something like jeans. When choosing clothes, I only look for comfortable clothes. But come to think of it, there may be many times when I chose black... Thinking about my clothes, I have many black ones so, as expected, I clearly like black. (Laugh)

Q. Morning or night, which side is strong?

A. If it’s morning or night, it’s night. I often watch movies at night. When I’m watching a serious movie alone, time goes by and I won’t even realise that morning comes. I often watch movies at home and at the cinema too.

Q. What do you do when you stay up all night?

A. I usually tend to fall asleep. If I stay up all night, I usually watch movie. Many a time I sleep early. It’s quieter at night than in the morning... I like the atmosphere that’s difficult to express in words. Ah, even so, morning is good too... er~m... as expected, I like morning and night the same.

Q. When is the time that you want to stay up all night?
