extravagantliar - (who are they) asked:
what was the worst injury your muse ever went through? how did it change their life and how did they fair in recovery? tangential question, how did it change their relationship with themselves?
I am leaving off the last question - as we know which one did the most damage - with survival at the ritual, I will state here: Varric's done. His shoulder cannot be repaired further without the additional assistance of a spirit healer or someone explicitly very, very skilled in lyrium-based magic. That shoulder is fused, he has poor perfusion into that arm, and he cannot lift his arms much higher than his shoulder. Survival of the ritual is debilitating, and he is struggling in a new way, with his brain feeling fine and his body not responding.
Please note here and now, I am a disabled person writing about disability from my perspective. I have heart conditions and a hypoxic brain injury, along with two degrees, one in animal medicine and the other in public health. While your mileage may vary differently from mine, as someone with an evil heart and broken ankles, this is my take and mine alone.
The other additional wound that did him in was an abdominal wound on his left-hand side. It was was penetrating would that was 3cm by 4cm by 2cm and fixed by someone who pulled his unconscious ass out of the Hanged Man at three am, he also killed a man that night - but then his friends hit him over the head with a bottle and stabbed him.
He survived mainly due to the kindness of the locals in Lowtown who knew him from before, his family's estate, and his porter, Hogan ( named for Happy Hogan—I know who I am, y'all ) retrieved him. He woke up alone and hungover in Hightown with a note on his nightstand, basically a summons to the Hawke Estate for an interview This is a wake up call, he is alone and the city is falling apart - he had a night where he let his PSTD ( and his mouth lets be real ) overtake him and picked a fight he could not win. This was the wake-up call needed, and he had to talk about what was going on. While he was never willing to get onto the boat, he was willing to try and fix his mistakes and oversights.
He did not fare well. He was on his feet in four days, talking to Cass within six, and on a boat within nine weeks. While the injury was healed before departing the skin is still inflamed and itches for about six months.
Below is the note passed along:
Hogan, Porter to House Tethras,
I have Master Tethras in my care. He is stable and recovering.
It was a penetrating abdominal wound, three cm wide - four long; two deep. Wounds were prepped and then cleaned, finally closed with vertical mattress sutures. No organ damage, likely a dull blade, there was torn muscle and skin - which has been repaired. Recovery should be uneventful, as long as recovery protocol is followed, notes attached.
He needs to reduce his smoking and drinking.
I spoke with Corff at the Hanged Man. The event was potentially triggered by Varric goading the other party with, “You wouldn’t stab a little guy.”
The patient was then stabbed.
I retrieved glass from his skull as well. He was likely hit over the head, which caused the concussion. You can retrieve him in a few hours.
If he looks like this, I dare to ask where are the others? Also please remind, Master Tethras I am a healer, not a miracle worker.
With peace, Healer Irhaal of Kirkwall 23 Harvestmere 9:38

actually here’s a question for you bc i was thinking abt the chevra kadisha which is a normal thing to think about immediately upon waking up — dwarves in orzammar seem to practice some form of entombment (? i could be wrong i don’t think we’re ever shown on screen) and andrastians obviously favor cremation, what do you imagine to be the practice of families like varric’s? what are their traditions regarding care for the dead or dying, do they have any specific mourning practices?
You know, we do put a lot of focus on death, around death, and what should be done during and directly after death.
I wrote what some called a ghost story, about how his family was interned on the surface side.
In Orzammar, it is called returning to the Stone for lack of better terms, and they've split the narrative on whether it's entombment into a physical stone, much like a crypt or surfaces if they are not of another faith have been implied to be buried.
Due to his banishment, Bartrand did not allow Andvar to be buried inside Kirkwall. Ilsa is interned alone, and Bartrand, due to his Red Lyrium corruption, had to be cremated. What was left of his bones ended up under watch - there was the minor implication that if Bartrand survies, Bianca has the shard to study it to help Bartrand, which makes Well, Shit hurt worse.
The Tethras Clan follows Orthodox mourning practices—the body must have someone with it until buried, there is help, and the family focuses on the funeral. The body must go into the ground quickly and be dressed simply. Mirrors are covered, clothes are ripped, and hair is not cut. The first thirty days are all mourning, and there is no headstone for a year. Ilsa is the only one with a headstone.
Sidri / @martyrmarked reminds him that lighting the Yahrzeit, remembrance candle on the anniversary of death, is important, as is remembering and passing things on, pulling things down, and not letting them rot.
He's not highly religious, but tradition also has value; he balances it with the present and the past or else one gets lost.

actually question for the class - what was the worst injury your muse ever went through? how did it change their life and how did they fair in recovery? tangential question, how did it change their relationship with themselves? ( this does not need to be a canonical injury - perhaps there is a point in the journey outside a canonical injury that you consider a serious shift for them, why is that a focal point in your storytelling? What affect does this have later on down they line if the are injured again? )

things to do: talk about the estate trade routes, talk about the relationship of the estate with the aurum estate, talk about how the estate routes money into Lowtown, talk about dock procedures and the porter Varric fires for a very good reason, holidays in the Tethras family, eight stories told, Asha’s forged paperwork ( and the amount of elves in Lowtown with forged paperpwork from the same source ) oh and citizenship in kirkwall
