It started off small.

It started off so small that you didn’t even notice. Even if you did notice back then, it wouldn’t have been something you considered an issue.

Because it started off small.

Most disasters start off small. A little drizzle before a full-on storm, a soft breeze before an uncontrollable hurricane.

Before you knew it, your relationship with Minsik had become one of those natural disasters. You couldn’t avoid it even if you tried. What had been the light of your life had now become the bane of your existence. You couldn’t avoid it even if you tried.

But like all hurricanes and storms, there were warning sign. The missed dates, the short texts, the distracted replies…

There was more than enough, brightly lit signs screaming at you, stop! Face it! You’re in an unhealthy relationship!

You wouldn’t listen to those signs. God forbid you listened to those signs. If you did, that meant you had to confront Minsik and that was not something you could do. That was not something you were coming back from, not whole anyway.

"Ring ring, can I hit you up?"

*Ring ring*

The phone was going off the hook again, every night for over a month the phone had rung. No rest for the wicked. The monotonous sound becoming like faded-out background noise.

*Ring ring*

Just like the other nights, you didn't pick up the phone. There wasn't really any point. He knew you wouldn't and that wasn't what he was phoning for. It wasn't always like this, things were different once. However nowadays in the late and lonely nights, he felt the need to send a sign. That he was still there...

That he still cared.

*Ring ring*

You felt the familiar itch of fingers desperate to answer but knew it would be the same as always. He'd hang up without a word, content only to hear your voice. But that wasn't enough for you. A voiceless body on the end of the line could never replace a tender touch. You knew that all too well.

He'd stopped replying the moment he realised broken promises were no good to you anymore. "I'm in the studio, making songs about you and me." That was always his excuse. Until you saw past the bullshit and stopped naively hanging onto his every word.

Instead he now relied on the ring of the telephone to convey what his words no longer could. He'd be home soon, he'd do better next time, he'd be different next time.

But there had been too many 'next times'. Too many phonecalls. Too many late nights.

Those other girls hadn't meant anything, they weren't you, they could never be you. That's what he said.

He was waiting for you, to pick up the phone and let him know that he was still your one.

You let it ring.
