Corneal Transplant—The Best Cornea Treatment for a Clear Vision
The cornea is the front window to the eye and allows light into the eye and bends the light rays to help the lens focus them upon the retina for a clear vision. To perform properly, the cornea must be crystal clear and be a proper curvature. Various cornea problems can be treated by corneal transplant surgery.
During corneal transplant surgery, only the clear, central part of the cornea is replaced. Corneal tissue used for transplant surgery comes from donors. The corneal transplant operation may be performed under either a local or general anesthetic, depending on what the doctor believes to be in the patient's best interests. The eye surgeon removes the center of the cloudy cornea and replaces it with the clear donor cornea. The donor tissue is sewed in place.
If a cataract is present, the eye doctor removes it as part of the corneal transplant operation. If an artificial lens is already in place in the eye and it is believed to be responsible for the clouding of the cornea, the artificial lens can be replaced with a type of lens less likely to irritate the donor corneal tissue.
Cornea is the transparent, dome-shaped surface of your eye which accounts for a large part of your eye's focusing power. A cornea transplant, also called keratoplasty, is an outpatient procedure which can restore vision, reduce pain and improve the appearance of a damaged or diseased cornea.
A number of conditions can be treated with a cornea transplant, including:
Thinning of the cornea
Clouding of cornea
Cornea scarring, caused by infection or injury
Swelling of the cornea
Corneal ulcers, including those caused by infection
Complications caused by previous eye surgery
Cornea transplant is a relatively a safe procedure. Cornea transplant does carries a small risk of serious complications, such as:
Eye infection
Increased risk of clouding of the eye's lens (cataracts)
Pressure increase within the eyeball (glaucoma)
Rejection of the donor cornea
Swelling of the cornea
Problems with the stitches used to secure the donor cornea
Whenever the vision is reduced due to corneal disorders like infections, corneal injuries and degenerative diseases, a corneal transplant or corneal grafting can be an effective means of restoring vision.
A corneal transplant is needed if:
Vision cannot be corrected satisfactorily.
Painful swelling cannot be relieved by medications or special contact lenses.
Conditions for corneal transplant:
Corneal failure after other eye surgery like cataract surgery
Complications from LASIK (lamellar transplants)
Hereditary corneal failure like Fuch's cornea
Keratoconus, a steep curving of the cornea
Scarring after infections, injury
Rejection after first corneal transplant
Compared to other foreign countries like USA, Canada, Australia etc., the eye treatments are carried out in India, at affordable rates. Dr. Neera Agrawal, the renowned eye doctor in India, offers you the best eye care treatments for all corneal disorders at affordable rates in Delhi.
