Yves Klein once said "Blue has no dimensions, it is beyond dimensions" and his most successful body of work was dedicated to a monochrome blue which became known as International Klein Blue (IKB). IKB was reminiscent of lapis lazuli that was used to paint the Virgin Mary's robes in Renaissance paintings, symbolizing purity and humility. Klein's ultramarine pigment was suspended in a synthetic resin, a recipe discovered with the help of Parisian paint dealer, Edouard Adam which helped retain the brilliance of the pigment. We have Miné Okubo for #Caturday today, an American artist and writer, best known for her book Citizen 13660, a collection of 189 drawings and accompanying text chronicling her experiences in Japanese American internment camps during World War II. Luckily for us her mother, Miejoko Okubo, recognized her daughter’s artistic talents and encouraged her from an early age. According to one anecdote, Okubo’s mother gave her the assignment of painting a different cat every day with the stipulation that she portray each cat’s personality as well as appearance. Sidenote: I used to draw a cat a day during the lockdown! It was sadly a short-lived project 😹 These exercises might have fostered a lifelong affection for cats, which are often featured in Okubo’s drawings and sketches. Mother and Cat (1941), painted shortly after her mother’s death, is among the collections at Oakland Museum of California. Although her mother encouraged her, she often lost patience with her early efforts at art because Miné could never copy anything precisely which could only mean she drew as she pleased. How catlike 😉 Miné studied under famous early 20th century avant-garde painter Fernand Léger and her work shows the influence his style "tubism" had on her with flat, geometric forms and the use of bold, primary colours. Colour, shapes, the variety of the animal kingdom, and even their movements contribute to the fascination of turning these creatures into jewellery form which can be quite a challenge especially when working on miniature sizes and intricate details. With a bright red enameled 18K Ladybird with pops of green and a Silver Wise Old Owl that studies you with its rose-cut diamond eyes, I hope the pieces I sourced embody this! Weston lived with his then wife Charis Wilson in a cabin in California on appropriately named Wildcat Hill with more than 20 cats. Both were cat aficionados and rumour has it that the young couple built the house near Carmel for the express purpose of having ‘room enough to swing a cat’—or rather, any number of cats. …” To house the large number of cats, Weston came up with the amusing architectural solution called the “Franklloydwright Addition,” a ramshackle amalgamation of boxes that successfully satisfied the cats’ homing instincts. Much of the concentrated photographic focus on cats likely stemmed from travel and security restrictions imposed during World War II, a period in which even Point Lobos was closed to the public for a time. Largely confined to his home, Weston photographed what was at hand. Could this also be the reason for the increase in cat content on social media during the lockdown?? 🧐 Driven to explore the power of natural form and beauty, Weston ultimately became a pioneer of modem photography and the first photographer to be awarded Guggenheim Fellowship in 1937. Louise Bourgeois is more known for her giant Maman spider sculptures but for #caturday today, we will be talking about her pieces that portray cats. Bourgeois had a troubled childhood and used her art to work through her memories and experiences, the mother figure being a constant theme. As a child, she helped in her parents' tapestry studio drawing legs and feet, and these shapes reappear throughout her body of work which we see in the piece titled "Self-Portrait" where she drew herself as a cat with a human-like face and 5 legs. Bourgeois explores the often complicated nature of mother and child relationships and perhaps used the image of cats because they are known to be fiercely protective mothers. She was very close to her mother who was in an unhappy marriage with her chronically unfaithful husband. Her death when Bourgeois was 21 devasted her and this provided a lot of the subject matter for her work. Bourgeois had two cats: Champfleurette and Tyger, when she was living with her husband and children in New York in the 1950s. Champfleurette makes an appearance in the 3rd image.
