The Orwells
Words - Licely Carcamo Photos - Neha Carvalho
After the 2014 release of Disgraceland, The Orwells are back with upcoming tour dates and the much anticipated release of their new album, Terrible Human Beings. The Chicago band played at Star Theater in November with SoCal natives, Dante Elephante and their return to Portland was well received by everyone in attendance.
Orwells fans know that shit goes down at their shows. With wildcard frontman Mario Cuomo, anything can happen on while they’re on stage. Add a rowdy crowd and new singles from the upcoming album into the midst, and you’ve got an incredibly sweaty and energized Orwells show.
Opening their set with Dirty Sheets, a staple to the band’s typical setlist, audience members went straight for a pit - showing that although this was the return from their two year hiatus in Portland, everyone was eager to have them back. One woman got on stage during the opening song hoping to dance along with Mario but was surprised, along with the rest of the crowd, when he picked her up and threw her back into the pit.
Though bandmates Matt O’keefe (guitar), Henry Brinner (drums), Grant Brinner (bass), and Dominic Corso (guitar) are more reserved during their performances, the contrast between them and Cuomo does not diminish their shows at all. In fact, it adds to their liveliness and highlights the band’s chemistry. Following the opening song, The Orwells transitioned into new music including recently released singles Buddy and They Put a Body in the Bayou. Buddy, barely a minute and a half long, is reminiscent of their earlier music from Remember When, but shows that they’ve refined their sound over time. Bayou, a seductive and provocative tune, teased the crowd with a preview of what was to come from the new album including Creatures, Fry, and the eight minute jam Double Feature.
Other veteran songs on the setlist included Let it Burn, and In My Bed, which Cuomo would point his microphone into the crowd for. Those in the front screamed into the mic repeating the infectious “I cried, she lied, it’s too late, goodbye” after the frontman. The seventeen song setlist also featured Gotta Get Down, Southern Comfort, The Righteous One, and of course Who Needs You. Being one of their most well known singles, Who Needs You had everyone (including those in the bar area who had been passively standing aside) yelling along to the rebellious lyrics and dancing around to the infectious tune. The band finished the song, abruptly put down their instruments, and left the stage.
They return after a few minutes of the crowd chanting Orwells! Orwells! Orwells! and return to another back to back throwback of Mallrats and Head. But when they returned, it was with beers and a bottle of vodka for Corso. A few swigs later, the tune for Mallrats begins and everyone is screaming along LA-LA-LA-LA-LA-LA and the pit once again forms with crazed crowd members dancing around. The set culminated with the psychedelic melody of Head and the anticipation of yet another song. Though this was the end of their show, people started chanting Cheap Beer! Cheap Beer! Cheap Beer!, pleading for a second encore and with their cover of the FIDLAR song. The Orwells didn’t come back for another encore, but the excitement of the show left its goers itching for more music- which is just what they’ll get from the band next February once Terrible Human Beings drops.
After the release of THB, The Orwells will be back on tour in both Europe and the United States. Hopefully this return with new music will indulge that craving we’ve all had for more since 2014.
