Why are roof battens and purlins used in buildings? 
The two words roof battens and purlins are often used interchangeably. Both are long strips, usually, wood, used to attach roofing material. But a "purlin" is usually applied directly onto the roof rafters, running perpendicular between them. At the same time, a "batten" is nailed to roof sheathing or spread over an existing roof to install a new roof.  
Some roofs, like the 5V-crimp metal, were once allowed to be installed directly onto the purlins, looking up at the metal roofing right from the attic. But building codes now necessitate roof sheathing, plus a layer of roofing felt or another approved water-resistant surface over and above the sheathing, before installation of the roof covering and steel purlins are also used in industrial construction.

Things to keep in mind while choosing the right roofing battens
Roofing battens perform several essential functions in a roof structure. They provide a surface for fixing roof tiles and carry the weight of those roofing tiles. They also help to support imposed loads caused by snow and wind during construction, and they may even provide a foothold during installation. However, we recommend only doing this where the batten is directly over a rafter. 
With so much relying on the roofing battens, specifying the correct product is essential - and failure to comply with the relevant standards could impact the overall life expectancy of the roof. This guide has been written to help you understand the requirements and recognise the differences between products.

What to look for when choosing roof battens? 
To help make it easier to choose between the vast range of roofing battens on the market, we’ve put together a handy checklist of things to look out for: 
Grading stamp  
Only battens that have been pre- or factory-graded to BS 5534 are considered to be compliant roofing battens. If you have any doubts at all, check with the manufacturer. Another additional quality assurance is third-party certification. 
Batten colour  
The issue of what roofing batten colors mean has caused some confusion. While the distinctive red colour of Battens does give peace of mind that you are using a BS 5534-compliant batten, this is not necessarily the case for all coloured battens on the market. Please don’t assume that just because it is colored, a batten conforms to the standard. It must also have the correct stamps and supporting documentation. 
Timber 
The type of timber used for a roofing batten is significant. The tree species from which the wood has come should be stamped on the batten.  
Drying process  
Timber that is too wet is prone to mold growth and rot. However, it must be dried and controlled to prevent defects such as warping and splitting. Check that the battens you buy are kiln-dried, as this helps to stabilise the timber. 
Grading process  
Roofing battens must be pre-graded before they get to the site. This can be done visually or by a machine. Mechanical grading, using camera- and laser-scanning technology, produces the most accurate and consistently graded roofing battens to deliver high accuracy, consistency and quality assurance. 
Quality checks  
Ask what quality checks the battens go through. Our timber is quality-checked at every stage of the process. Raw materials are checked for conformity to our buying specifications. An operator is present during the scan to check for compliance, and the battens are rechecked when the scan is complete. Pieces are also pulled from the production process every hour for a complete quality check for compliance with BS 5534. 
Treatment 
Roofing battens should be preservative-treated to Use Class 2 in accordance with BS 8417. Different manufacturers use their types of preservative treatment and may offer various guarantees as a result. JB Red Battens use a patented preservative called MicroPro. Homeowners often need clarification when it comes to choosing appropriate roofing options. Most want a roof that looks good, is easy to keep in good shape, and doesn't leak. A good roof may cost a lot more upfront, and you might be tempted to choose the cheapest option, but it won't make financial sense down the road with more frequent repairs and upkeep. Two primary installation methods for homeowners who choose metal roofing are direct-to-deck and battens. Both have benefits and drawbacks, so it can be challenging to decide which is best. In our experience, steel ceiling battens are always the best choices.

Batten System Installations 
With battens, roofing materials are attached to a grid, creating continuous airspace when conserving energy is important. Battens are also a good choice when roof-overs are needed — providing a smooth, flat surface. In cases where concrete tiles make up the roof, battens are the better choice. The batten system is the only option if the HVAC system is on top. A variation of the batten system is highly recommended because most of them only use horizontal purlin boards. 
Dimensions of roof battens 
The dimensions of roof battens can vary widely. Some battens are shorter, while others are longer. The length of each batten depends on the number of rows. For example, a roof with 15 rows of tiles has a batten length of 300 feet. The batten length is then added to the size of the roof. 
The dimensions of roof battens must comply with specific standards to ensure quality. The BS 5534 standard specifies the grading of battens and lays out minimum requirements for timber batten size. It is worth noting that different manufacturers may offer additional warranties for different types of battens. 
Advantages of batten systems 
Continuous air space: This space allows hot air out, preventing it from entering the attic. 
Cross battens keep even more heat out of the attic: Installing vertical battens first and then horizontal battens on top, the space allows fresh air through the boom and can exit out at the top. 
Save money on time, labor, and disposal expenses: Batten installations are usually preferred for roof-overs because the batten grid ensures an uninterrupted flat surface for the new roof (compared to a more expensive roof tear-off). 
Maintenance is more accessible than direct-to-deck panels: Batten profiles are walkable (not too steep to walk on with minimal slope), and the metal tile panels can be easily replaced, repaired, or removed for adding solar panels or other equipment. 
Batten system vs. direct to deck 
Steel ceiling battens have room for continuous air space from the eave to the ridge, which lets hot air out of the interiors and prevents it from entering the attic, compared to direct-to-deck profiles, which only have up to 1" and taper down to nothing. 
Batten systems only have about 47 fasteners penetrating the underlay per square, while other direct-to-deck profiles have till 200. 
Maintenance of a batten system is more accessible than direct-to-deck panels, as batten profiles are very walkable, and metal tile panels anywhere on the roof can be easily replaced, repaired, or removed for adding solar panels or equipment. Direct-to-deck profiles need to pull panels out from the ridge down, to repair, replace or remove a panel to add solar panels.
