Something that makes me go insane about the oscar discourse is that everyone is acting as if he killed a man. Like “Oh well if Max wasnt paying attention, if other drivers werent paying attention, something could have happened.” Nothing happened though? Nothing happened during that incident? Nobody got hurt? No damage to the cars? Like sure something COULD HAVE happened… but it didnt

no literallyyyyy and like they are driving race cars at several hundred miles per hour, the whole sport is dangerous 😭 also you’re SUPPOSED to be paying attention when you’re driving any kind of car, especially a race car, so if they got into an accident because max wasn’t paying attention thennnn wouldn’t that be max’s fault? but he WAS paying attention like he was supposed to, and nothing happened

it is true that some rules exist for safety reasons, but it’s not a 100% overlap. just because something is a safety concern doesn’t mean it’s a rules violation and vice versa. like just think about the number of big crashes that were written off as racing incidents because neither driver was necessarily out of bounds of the rules even though it resulted in a crash. so the potential for danger ≠ penalty. and while there ARE some rules that were put in place specifically for safety reasons, you can’t act like every single regulations call should be made 100% from a safety perspective otherwise the only reasonable call would be to reduce the speed of the cars by 150mph

i think jolyon palmer did a really good job in his analysis of explaining what type of incident that particular rule was created for and why what oscar did was nowhere near causing that type of incident. he broke down how max had PLENTY of time to respond to oscar’s breaking (which he did because, again, he was paying attention like he was supposed to) and how the timing of the lights going off and the fact that oscar’s breaking was immediately afterwards meant that no one was under the impression that he was going for a restart when he had sped up. AND he explained how oscar had a good reason for breaking like that because you’re not allowed to overtake the safety car so he had to give it some space

i’m a big advocate for safety, but this incident was such a non issue, especially for a 10 second penalty (i would’ve still been pretty annoyed if it were a 5 second penalty but i would’ve gotten over it easier). so anyone who’s criticizing oscar for “not wanting to take responsibility for his dangerous actions” is just making up excuses to hate on him 🤷‍♀️
