     ACE DOESN’T SPOOK EASILY, in fact it’s quite the opposite. there’s a hubris here / a blind cockiness / a belief that no one would ever in a million years actually hold him accountable for the words he says or the things he does. that would be ridiculous, & yet the murderous intent emanating behind him is so heavy that the laugh that leaves him as he turns around to face it is almost NERVOUS.  ❝ heyyyyy, leona ! funny running into you here, ❞  bad start.  ❝ i’m super good though actually. it’s like they say : stories are better when you don’t bog them down with unnecessary details. ❞  he inches backwards then. just a tiny, miniscule, little bit.  ❝ just saying though that if you hit me now you’ll kinda be proving my point. y’know, about punching down on the little guy. ❞  . . . very bad finish.

    WERE IT POSSIBLE TO SIMPLY sink through the floor or evaporate into the wall right now, idia would, & he would without a second thought, but tragically life isn’t a video game. tragically, his limbs are solid & his feet stay grounded & he cannot turn on his side to become paper thin & invisible. instead he has to stand on just the other side of the door, hold his breath, keep silent, & pray ( pray, pray, pray to gods he knows but doesn’t believe in — doesn’t trust — cuz it’s all he has ) that salem will believe the improbable : that idia has gone / stepped out / is otherwise away, & that they’ll leave. that they’ll maybe get the hint. surely salem has heard of the term GHOSTING before, right ? right ??

admittedly deuce is confused when ace calls him his best friend & only progressively gets more confused as the conversation progresses. he’s not entirely sure where this conversation is going, but ace is acting weird which means it’s probably not good. ❛   yeah, of course i remember,    ❜  deuce replies uncertainly, bewilderment evident on his face as he feels a sense of dread roll over him.  ❛    what about it?    ❜

     RED EYES MEET BLUE for the briefest of instants, & the confusion on deuce’s face is enough to send ace into a panic. he moves his hand from deuce’s shoulder to playfully punch him in the arm in some odd attempt to ( . . . ) lighten the mood ? he’s not positive, but he’s not entirely sure it even matters. ❝ well, no homo, but that’s the day i fell in love with you. ❞ he raises his hands defensively & swiftly reiterates, ❝ no homo ! . . . but that’s the day i knew you were mine, ❞ now it just seems like he’s playing it up, & hey ! he might be ! just a bit ! just a teeny tiny bit ! he’s pretty sure he’d die of embarrassment if he said all this completely seriously. ❝ it’s just that looking into your eyes made me realize, & — no homo — your lips touching mine changed my life. ❞

     ❝ SO I WAS HANGIN’ OUT with someone in ignihyde yesterday, & while i was there i could hear idia yelling over that, like, squid shooter game, y’know ? ❞ he’s prattling his mouth off to the rest of the basketball club cleanup crew, because of course he is. ❝ but that game’s mostly for little kids right ? well it kinda reminded me of leona. you know . . . since he also blames five - year - olds for his problems. ❞ ace lets out a snort at his own cruel joke, but when he’s met with only horrified expressions from his peers, he stops, notes the way they stand straighter as they stare, mortified, over his shoulder, & visibly deflates. ❝ . . . he’s standin’ right behind me, isn’t he ? ❞

     give him a minute, he’s processing the possibility of actually being liked for who he is, as he is. he’ll be back to saying stupid shit in a second.

RE : ace + friendships / closeness

     i was talking to dove about this last night & i’m still not over it, but i think ace has never been good at keeping & maintaining friendships. whenever he would get close to someone as a kid, the front he puts up around others to blend in more would start to slip, & he’d always end up driving people away with his personality. rather than reflect on that & work on himself, he took this & directed it outward, making it everyone else’s problem instead. as a result, he doesn’t let himself get super close to people anymore. every friend he had in middle school was no more than a fair - weather friend out of fear that, were they to get close, they wouldn’t like him anymore & would leave him. he thinks closeness begets inevitable disappointment for both parties, so this forced disappointment is for the best, he thinks ( it has to be. he doesn’t know do if it isn’t ).

     even his middle school girlfriend was an example of this, i think. him saying that he was ‘ bored of her always wanting to hang out all the time ‘ was a lie —— especially given the fact that he wants a best friend for a partner that he can do everything with ( in fact : he probably LIKED these things about her, but used them as an excuse in the moment cuz he knew the others wouldn’t understand his real reasoning ). the closeness & intimacy freaked him out, & it was simply easier to ghost her once he realized there was care & effort involved, rather than fuck it up even worse down the line, which, again, he sees as an inevitability. if someone is going to leave, he’d rather it be him.

     hilariously & miserably, yuu & deuce are probably the longest friends he’s had in . . . forever. it kinda snuck up on him —— they kinda snuck up on him. he rationalizes it by reminding himself that he & yuu have a mutually symbiotic relationship, & that deuce sees him more as a rival than anything else. still, i think it freaks him out a bit, especially with recent events from both of them triggering some of his shittier personality traits ( which isn’t their fault !! ), but ace’s jealousy issues, compensation & inferiority problems, & the fact that he purposely tries to surround himself with people he deems weaker than him in some regard is a headcanon post for another day.
