Israel is not only starving the people of Gaza but it also wants to ensure the spread of disease through contaminated water and surgical tools, as well as ensuring injured Palestinians suffer through horrendous pain.
It's beyond sickening.

Free (?) candy!
This year, I went to my first Gergean (قرقيعان) of its kind. In my grandfather's house, where people bring Gergean packages and distribute them.
As a child, the way we did Gergean was much more different. We went door to door, kind of like Halloween, but instead of costumes of fictional characters, monsters, and pop culture figures, we dressed up as our ancestors.
Tonight, we are also going to be wearing traditional clothes, but we’ll be indoors. Instead of door to door knocking, the distribution will be internal. Between family members.
This doesn’t mean that people no longer go the door to door route, but with the rise of protectiveness over children taking candy from strangers has led more and more families to do a family Gergean instead of how it was before.
Gergean happens in the middle of Ramadan every year, when the moon is full. Its roots are unclear.
The songs are usually a prayer to god to protect the children and keep the moms happy.
After singing kids will receive a bunch of candy from the owner of the house. Now a days, it´s not the same. Nowadays, kids gather in a family members house, usually a grandparents home, and everyone who has kids will have a bunch of little bundles of candy set up for each of their kids, or a bunch of bundles for all their kids.
These bundles will then be distributed to everyone in attendance.
I got a lot, so much that I got a tummy ache the next day.
This went from a holiday where people were distributing very humble bunches of sweets to commercial activity akin to what some in the midwest would do for easter times ten.
Markets and supermarkets will advertise their bundles, sweets shop will advertise their wholesale candy to make your own bundles, you can also order them premade from an instagram boutique or if you don’t like candy how about distributing hermes stocking stuffers in boxes.
It is one of the many parts of Ramadan and Eid that are slowly becoming commercialized over time. Not that consumption was not part of the celebration back in the day, we had to buy the outfits (which we do now), we had to buy the bags, we had to buy the candy and the serving basket.
So it isn’t that the commercialization is surprising, or negative, it is just observable.
I am also enjoying the level of opulence in the free (to me, not the parents who put it together) candy stash that I now get to pig on whenever I want to.
It might last until next year!

“Israel is committing genocide.” Yes. They are. But so is the US. The US is 100% complicit in this, and Israel would not have been able to do as much without the help of the US. I’m disgusted to be living in a country that is complicit in the literal MURDER of civilians. Men, women, children, elderly, families. All dead because of Israel AND the US. This needs to STOP.
