Claws. Teeth. Training. What among these is beyond the lawful Huntsman? Though Tai finds no immediate animosity within scarlet gaze, he does not drop his guard. Temperamental does not begin to summarize the thing--the creature--the man before him. 

“You’re good, I’ll give you that. And you’re armed to the teeth, sure, but it’s all just another weapon, isn’t it? Just a load of training and natural talent? What separates you from the people you hunt is the audacity.”

It does depend on the definition of protagonist, doesn’t it. Weight rests upon the shoulders of the protagonist. The burden of conflict, the driving force, the hope for better, all of this is to be their responsibility and Tai doesn’t want it. He can’t say he ever did.

As ever, too much is left unsaid. Summer was the protagonist.

Shadowed smile on his lips was wry but was something. Dimpled cheeks were clean shaven save for the patch of gold upon his chin, at first kept because she always hated it, and now simply a part of him. He’d lost it for a while among the stubble growing shaggy upon his face.

Little by little is better than nothing at all.

botanical headcanons

Forget-me-not: Has your muse ever forgotten something that is or was important to them? Are they afraid of forgetting things like that?

Yang said her first word when Tai was deep in a depressive haze. Summer was present for her first word and told him excitedly about it, and he was excited with her--but the memory of what exactly the word was has faded into the grey. Forgetting this is one of his greatest regrets and he very much fears missing and forgetting major things like this again.

Hyacinth: Is your muse athletic? Does it come naturally to them, or have they had to work for their physique and/or skill?

Tai is certainly athletic. He enjoys working out and staying active, both for personal reasons and because his work as a teacher at Signal requires it of him. While he possesses some level of natural talent and good fortune in his frame and ability to build muscle, Tai has worked hard for his fitness and his combat skill, and he’s rather proud of it--even with the layer of fat the domestic fatherhood life has put on him.

Poppy: What comforts your muse?

Being able to share space with someone he loves is a comfort to him. Quality time is his favorite way to receive love--with acts of service being his primary method of showing love--and something as simple as enjoying the sun together in the yard puts him at peace. Also worthy of mention are hot coffee, baking from scratch, and having doggy outings with Zwei.

Rhododendron: Is your muse receptive to warnings & advice given by others?

It largely depends on the context. For the most part he’ll at least hear them out, but he does tend to make his own mistakes regardless of attempts to warn him off. Tai learns better from his own experience and on so many occasions in the past, has had to acknowledge that in hindsight, someone was right, and he should have listened.

Bachelor’s button: Does your muse actively seek romantic companionship, or cherish the liberties of being single?

While I wouldn’t say Tai cherishes the liberties of being single, he also doesn’t go out of his way to seek romantic partners. New romantic opportunities arise, of course. Tai is a friendly, good looking single father of two with a great sense of humor and a nice smile. He’s also hindered by his own fear of loss and heartbreak, and will generally either politely decline an advance, or bow out before it gets too serious. He’s scared and he lets it stop him. 

Daisy: Did your muse ever feel as though their innocence had been lost? What moment in their life could be described as the end of their innocence?

Ozpin indoctrinated Tai and his team into the inner circle and revealed the existence of Salem, and even then, it couldn’t be said that his innocence was lost. At the time, he still believed that good would triumph over evil and he really didn’t understand the scope of the war he’d signed up for. If the destruction of his innocence is to be ascribed to a single pivotal moment, it would be discovering how relentlessly cruel Salem’s followers could be. Violence for the sake of violence, suffering for the sake of suffering, from humans. From people. Tai settled into a more domestic lifestyle after Yang’s birth with the knowledge that he was hiding from the true ugliness in the world--and he swore he’d do his best to protect her, and later Ruby, from it. In this, he has certainly failed.

Abatina: Is there anything in life your muse has changed their mind about over time (due to becoming more educated on the topic, certain experiences, etc.), or that they would change their mind about under certain circumstances?

Let’s talk about the skirt incident. On Tai’s second day of his first year of Beacon, he was faced with a classmate he didn’t know how to deal with. Qrow Branwen was unfriendly, he was moody, he responded poorly to Tai’s attempts at friendship. Qrow reeked of different and no matter how much of a good person Tai thought he was or wanted to be, his worldview was challenged. When the opportunity arose for what he considered to be a bit of hazing he was quick to take it. Boys will be boys, right? Tai’s insecurity led him to convince Qrow that the skirt was a kilt and was part of the boys’ uniform. The fact that Qrow took it in stride did, in his mind, absolve him of any fault. Over the years Tai grew as a person, but he never did apologize--and even up to the events of volume four, he “did that jerk a favor”. Tai knows by now that what he did was wrong, but he doesn’t think it was that big a deal. If he were faced with consequences from it, or if Qrow were to ever admit how it impacted him, Tai would find that lost apology pretty damn fast. It’s just that if that’s a problem.

Anemone: How does your muse view the world: as a cruel & unforgiving place, a land full of wonders, or something in between? Where does that world view come from (what experiences, life lessons, etc.)?

Whatever chance Tai had at thinking the world was a land full of wonders was gravely wounded when Raven left and finished off with Summer’s death. He does not, however, think the world is cruel and unforgiving--at least, not entirely. It’s safe to say his worldview lies somewhere in between. Tai believes the world is full of beauty and that wonder can be found in the smallest of places. Raising two girls has helped him keep a grip on this view, as he taught them to appreciate everything from the tiniest seedling springing forth from the soil to the thunderous roar of a mighty waterfall. He also understands that the world is a terrifying place full of cruelty the likes of which he can’t fathom. Tai wants to be an optimist. He wants to find the beauty in life. In doing so, he can’t forget what lurks out there, creeping ever closer to snuff out anything good.

Tulip: How does your muse view people in general?

Tai is a people person. He believes people are inherently good and will make morally good choices if given the opportunity. This man is the type to have a backyard barbecue and invite the entire neighborhood. While he understands that people are capable of doing terrible things, he’s of a mind that these choices that hurt others are a product of environment and circumstance rather than true evil.
