The most obvious reasons why I don’t like this “but Clark should be Kon’s father!!” thing are that it’s often used to throw Clark under the bus for some terrible act he never even committed, it ignores Kon’s real parental figures, it’s usually based in valuing genetics over literally everything else, and it’s…just completely opposed to the entire history of their relationship,

But also, I realize I don’t like it because it removes the–to me, much more poignant–canon that Clark and Kon became family by choice.

Clark did not make Superboy. Clark had no say or responsibility in Superboy being created. Clark was literally dead when Superboy was made and when he first appeared. By the time Clark came back, Superboy had his own life, and his own supporting cast other adults in it, and soon after, Superboy moved to his own city. Hell, then-current canon had revealed that they weren’t even clones after all.

Clark had no responsibility to Superboy, and Superboy neither needed nor expected Superman to be his family (let alone specifically his father).

But Clark, with no push from anyone else, with no duty to fulfill, chose to endorse Superboy using the S-shield, both his symbol on Earth and his family crest on Krypton. And Clark chose to go beyond that and offer Superboy a place in his family, offer him the name Kon-El–a name previously held by someone who would have been Clark’s cousin; someone who, very specifically, was beloved and adopted into the House of El. It’s not something Clark was compelled to do; it’s something he wanted to do, to reach out to this kid (who, by then-canon, was only tangentially Kryptonian at all) and welcome him into a family.

And when those aforementioned adults were no longer in Kon’s life and he no longer had a place to live, Clark offered him a place with his parents in Smallville, and welcomed him into that family too, and Kon became Connor Kent too.

And they chose to declare themselves both of the House of El, and they chose to grow up in the same house, and call the same people Ma and Pa, and to call each other brothers. No because they had to. Because they wanted to, and they could. Family of choice.

And that is why Clark and Kon calling each other brothers will always feel so much more meaningful to me than this fandom and/or young justice tv idea that they must be father and son.

ok. Narrative obfuscation in House Of Leaves. It’s a relatively simple story about a man who moves into a house with his wife and kids, and the house is haunted. That’s it. The core themes are very transparent.

Except, that story is documented by a famous war documentarian, then published as a series of rare tapes, which are discoursed by film buffs, then interpreted from viewings and reading film critique by a blind old man, then his thoughts are transcribed into a manuscript by a series of young women, which is then compiled from scattered notes by the most mysoginistic, damaged, toxic pothead drop-out who won’t stop talking about his life, which is THEN edited and published by some vaguely nefarious agency who soberly refuse to provide any clarification or context.

It’s not simple, but there are so many different hands on the wheel with wildly differing opinions that you can’t discern the truth.

Johnny Truant is such a miserable hopeless fuck up. He has no sense of academic rigor or archival professionalism. Any interference he provides only muddies the waters and taints what would otherwise be a gripping piece of metaphysical film criticism. His neurotic rambling and personal anecdotes cloud an otherwise reasonable story.

If he wasn’t in it, if we could read Zampano’s manuscript directly, WE would be able to understand the truth. We would get it completely, and we wouldn’t have to encounter so much violence, so much miserable graphic detail. It would be a better story.

And fuck it, if we didn’t have to read all of Zampano’s tangents and analyses and interpretations, if we could just find a copy of the famous “five-and-a-half minute hallway” vhs, if we could SEE it, we’d understand. We wouldn’t need endless pontification of what Navidson and Karen’s marriage might entail, or recitations of what a director once said in a Rolling Stones article. We’d see the hallway itself, stretching out into what should be the backyard, and we’d get it. Hell, Zampano is blind in his old age. He can’t even watch the damn movie! But we could. We’d know instantly, the second we saw it. The impossibility of it, the gravity of it, the weight of that dark abyss.

And well, the VHS recording is a little dark, and the quality is poor, and maybe the white balance isn’t so perfect. And actually, VHs tapes could be manipulated. We can’t be sure that Navidson isn’t just using clever videography tricks to invent a hallway. If we were there, if we found the house (it’s in virginia, isn’t it? we even have the address). If we GO there, we could look down that hallway. And it’s dark, so if we just brought a flashlight, maybe took a few steps inside-

He was meant to be developed into adulthood but was freed by the CLONE SONS of the CADMUS scientists BEFORE he fully developed, meaning he popped out at roughly 15 YEARS OLD and got called SUPERBOY. Lex didn't even KNOW HE EXISTED until he debuted on TV and he was MAD he didn't have in on the cloning shit. That's CANON if you actually 📖 READ 📖 the Death of Superman, but GEOFF JOHNS must have been reading with his EYES CLOSED because he wrote in a theory that Kon was actually "the clone of Lex Luthor and Superman" that was published and 🚫 DISMISSED 🚫 in the Superboy letters column because it was RIDICULOUS but then he got employed at DC and ten- TEN YEARS later in literally his FIRST issue writing Kon he made his NO MEDIA LITERACY. FAN THEORY. canon and used THAT for shitty eugenics "but that means Kon has 👹 EVIL GENES 👹 from Lex Luthor what if that means he'll turn evil???" CHEAP ANGST STORYLINES and took away his COOL PUNK FIT and made him look like an ARMY BRAT LOSER.
