i hope you'll forgive a slightly lengthy plot summary. this is literally just the initial premise and does not contain major spoilers.

i had to google to see how the genre is described. google tells me it is an "epic period action drama film," which it is, but that like. truly does not encompass it At All. LMAO

it's an indian film in telugu that's a fictional story about two actual historical freedom fighters, komaram bheem and alluri sitarama raju. in real life, these two men never met each other. in RRR, not only do they meet each other, but they discover they are soulmates, and also each other's worst enemy, and also each other's best friend, and also more than that, etc.

bheem is a tribal man who's been adopted by a group of gond people. he is known as their "shepherd" and is extremely kind and gentle and earnest, except when he has to protect the flock from outside threats, at which point Shit Gets Real Really Fast.

the movie's inciting incident is the kidnapping of a young girl in the tribe named malli. the very blonde very rich very british wife of the british governor has decided that she likes malli's artistic and musical skills, so she's going to kidnap and keep her as a pet. during the kidnapping, malli's mother is very nearly killed & a lot of the tribe ends up Horribly beaten and injured.

bheem, very reasonably, loses his fucking mind. and embarks on a one-man quest to hunt malli down and bring her home.

so that's our main protagonist. man made of Actual Sunshine. beautiful angel. it is Shocking how good he is.

meanwhile we've got our antagonist. ram.

puts my head in my hands.

ram is an indian officer of the british raj. he is ASTONISHINGLY good at committing atrocities. and oppressing people. and being a very handsome very wet meow meow.

he's also the only one whose Physical Prowess rivals bheem's. at the beginning we mostly see him use these crazy powers for evil, such as singlehandedly subduing a mob of a thousand oppressed people thru extreme violence while the brits look on like

ram is The Best at being a cop. the movie does not shy away from extreme violence At All in this regard. at one point while we were watching, rafi said, "wow, i'm sorry about all the british violence, i forgot How Much there is" and justice was like "....is it weird to say i'd like this movie Less if they Didn't depict the british violence??"

which like. Yeah. 100% agree.

SO.

the governor's family is warned that bheem is going to hunt them down. instead of being like, "wow, we should probably give back this child we stole," they're like, "lol. lmao." and they task ram with going undercover to find the shepherd.

bheem goes undercover as well, so he can get closer to people in the governor's orbit. he and ram meet when there's a sudden disaster & they have to work together to save a young child.

again. both Deep Undercover. both having No Idea who the other is.

they become friends IMMEDIATELY bc their souls are one and the same, while also being complementary opposites. there's a whole montage of them hanging out and having fun together. for weeks. maybe months....??

ram is still looking for bheem. bheem is still looking for malli.

i will leave u with that premise and say: all the drama you can possibly imagine Is Going To Happen. and more. the film DELIVERS on its premise. and is also a lot twistier than i expected. and thrilling. and fucking Delightful. and horrible. and gutwrenching. and a Glorious power fantasy. all at once!

also the score goes hard as hell & there's epic bollywood dance and action sequences that fuck and all of the story beats are SOOOOO emotionally earned. the problem with seeing the circus video edit -- which is STILL A FUCKING FANTASTIC INTRO TO THE FILM -- is that it can't quite capture Just How Emotionally Earned And Wonderful all of these dazzling-ass visuals are. IT'S SO MUCH BETTER WHEN U HAVE CONTEXT FOR EVERYTHING HAPPENING IN THERE....

it's So Fucking Good. oooooh my god it's so fucking good.

and ram and bheem's relationship has The Sauce. you guys know i'm not usually an m/m girlie these days, so Please trust that when i say they have the sauce.... they have The Sauce. two fully-realized characters with their own unique relationship that cannot be replicated through cardboard m/m stereotypes or projections. i can't even say a whole lot about the relationship arc bc of spoilers but like. it's as awful and as horrific and as delightful and as exhilarating as it can Possibly be. SO GOOD.

if u want a genuinely fucking fantastic film with genuinely fucking fantastic characters n storytelling n a lot of Killing Your Oppressors In Epic Power Fantasy Ways, then. watch RRR.

it's that time of year when countless people in countless schools and universities start thinking about running a d&d night, and I'm here to tell you: that's the devil talking. listen, I play a lot of games, D&D among them, and I run a LOT of events for college students. what you want is a game with dirt simple mechanics, character creation that can be completed in about a minute or less, and a contingency plan to split your attendees into groups if too many of them show up to reasonably play together. maybe something that doesn't even have dice idk. I'm not being a buzzkill I SWEAR I'm sincerely trying to save you from the horrors of a D&D night where 20 people show up and half of them have level 20 characters packing 16 magic items and a bad case of Main Character Syndrome and the other half are going to need to spend 45 minutes making their first character sheet ever. just play a different game man.
