Some observations on book covers
Edit because apparently this needs to be said: the point of a book cover is to tell you what you're about to read and whether or not you want to read it. Following trends in cover design doesn't mean the book is bad or had a bad cover designer. It's visual communication. I've read and enjoyed about half the books featured here.

bee's book reviews - issue #1 . ۫ ꣑ৎ .
Tumblr media
hello, dolls ! recently i finished reading the book my year of rest and relaxation by otssa moshfegh. i wanted to share my thoughts and rating of the book ! so yes, this is just me yapping about books (which i do enjoy) <3
(this will become a series as i have begun leaving my reading slump <3)
rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ .5/5
review: this book was really really good. at the beginning of this novel, it's basically the narrator talking about what has been going on in her life (which i really enjoy reading). it delves into how she had gotten into her year of "hibernation", as she calls it. she had starting going on sleep medication almost constantly to just continue sleeping every day, averaging at about 15 hours a day, with a hope that she would somehow emerge a new, refreshed woman with a different outlook on life.
she goes through this with her "best friend" reva (which, let's be honest, she doesnt treat that well for about 3/4 of the book), her on-and-off boyfriend trevor (she has a thing for older men) and her therapist dr. tuttle (who is NOT a real therapist). throughout the book, she faces challenges with her sleep, with at some point becoming an insomniac and being extremely terrified over not being able to sleep.
our narrator has been through much - both parents died when she was in college, and they were not very good parents when they were alive. so i believe that she had wanted to undertake this hibernation because she didnt like her life and her memories and wanted it all to go away. she felt comfortable being away from it all, not having to think, floating in the familiar unconsciousness without a worry in the world.
now, it can be a bit strange to read. some of it definitely doesnt make sense and the characters are not extremely likeable. but i did really like the story and the plot and the way it was written. moshfegh is a good author know for her other books (i.e. lapnova) and i really enjoyed reading this book <3
i hope this inspired some of you to read this novel as well !! see you next time, angels <3

The smell of the library always lifted my spirits - that peculiar combination of old stone, dust, woodworm, and paper made properly from rags.
