DSA Reflection
1. What was your process in selecting your sources?
My topic was Immunizations, which have a lot of controversy around them. I knew that in YouTube I would find most if not all the sources I needed, which I did. There were so many available, and so easy to find. I just had to find sources that would talk about both the sides of the argument.
Tumblr media
2. How do you understand the difference between traditional and non-traditional sources?
In regards to my topic, Immunizations, there are many non-traditional sources. A lot of people have personal opinions in regards to their experience with immunizations. They are not experts in the topic and our posting their believes in regard to the subject, which to me are non-traditional sources. For my topic a traditional source would be the Centers of Disease and Control, who are an accredited and reliable source.
3. What did you enjoy/dislike about using non-traditional sources?
The traditional sources I used for the LR where just information, they were not personal in nature. The non-traditional sources were the complete opposite. They would filled the audience with emotions. I personally got teary watching a documentary from YouTube. The documentary manipulated the viewers emotions into agreeing with their views on the subject. I overall enjoyed it very much.

4. Select one of the questions listed and explain the rhetorical choices you made toward answering the question.
For answering question number three, I used pathos. I described the feelings I went through when watching some of the sources online.

The LR is a beast. It’s not easy, but you kept with it and you finished. Now, on to the next one.
Week 10 Lit Review Reflection
1. What patterns did you find in the development, or enhancement, of your research skills?
I had interviewed two different UTEP professors for my primary research. At first i was nervous, timid and the questions I had prepared were extremely broad, thus giving me some broad answers towards my topic. After learning from the first, I had narrowed down better interview questions and become more confident in my approach and enhancement for exactly what information I needed from the interviews source.
Tumblr media
2.  Did your assessment/evaluation of the sources change? If so, how?
My evaluation did change after assessing myself and acknowledging what I could do better in terms of getting better information.
Tumblr media
 3. Do you think the methodology described in questions 1 and 2 work? Yes/No. Explain.
I think that the methodology did work. From self assessment and evaluating, one can see what they are doing right or wrong and either better their skills or stop doing what seems to be an incorrect method.
4.Select one of the questions listed and explain the rhetorical choices you made towards answering the question.
The question number 2′s rhetorical choices that i made towards answering the answers has a lot to do with the rhetorical appeal pathos because, even though I did have a lot of doubt and anxiety towards getting the research needed, I self analyzed and just kept at it and “just kept swimming.”

Class,
Thus far I have received 11 responses regarding completing the Digital Source Analysis or the Film Doc. If you would like to complete the Doc, but have not notified me, please do so immediately. Also, if you are interested in completing the Film Doc, and would like to work in a group reblog this post and state that you’re looking for a group.
For the Doc you can switch topics to work in a group. If you want to complete the Film Doc, but do not wish to switch topics to work in a group, then you can complete the Film Doc on your own.

Lit Review Checklist
This is all information that can be found in the PowerPoint, and in your e-book, but posting it here can’t hurt.
8-10 pages. Not including Title, Abstract, & Reference Pages.
7-10 sources. You must use at least 7 sources when answering your research questions. I count them!
One image (appropriate size, and relevant). Most students use a graph to show their data.
Primary Research. This must answer at least one of your research questions. You must explain your methodology. So, what did you do? (survey, interview) How did you do it? (online, face to face, etc.) Explain your results.
Must be in APA format, and written in 3rd person.
This is how I feel when you don’t follow assignment guidelines.

Abstract Help
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Class, I noticed a few draft with questions about the abstract. Here are some infographics that may help. Essentially, the abstract is a brief overview of you paper's purpose, research findings, and conclusions. State what you studied, why you did it, how you conducted your research (type of research) and what were your results.

PIECING TOGETHER THE LITERATURE REVIEW
Working on Introduction and In-text-citation
Class Requirement for our Introduction section:
 Background information on the topic
 Stated research questions (4). These questions should appear in bullet list format.
 Thesis: “Announces the main point, major claim, or controlling idea in an essay.
A clear thesis helps readers because it prepares them for what they will be reading” o Ex: “This report investigates the following community problem, and will address point 1, 2, 3, and 4.
Writing the introduction
In the introduction, you should:
Define or identify the general topic, issue, or area of concern, thus providing an appropriate context for reviewing the literature.
Point out overall trends in what has been published about the topic; or conflicts in theory, methodology, evidence, and conclusions; or gaps in research and scholarship; or a single problem or new perspective of immediate interest.
Establish the writer’s reason (point of view) for reviewing the literature; explain the criteria to be used in analyzing and comparing literature and the organization of the review (sequence); and, when necessary, state why certain literature is or is not included (scope).

RWS e-book pg-254 states

In-text citation.
What is in-text citation. Google defines in-text citation as “The purpose of an MLA in-text citation, sometimes called a parenthetical reference, is to help readers easily find the sources in the Works Cited page that correspond to your referenced passage.”
Here is a short video for in-text citation. I found this video helpful.
youtube
We can also get information about in-text citation from our RWS ebook pg-43

I hope this helps! If you have any question don’t hesitate to google it. Just kidding. Do ask your doubts and questions !!
And I am done!!

This video will help you decide whether you may need to use scales in your survey, or if yes/no answers will suffice. This will all be dependent upon the information you want, and the types of questions you ask. Watch the video, and if it’s helpful give this post a little love (heart in the corner), or reblog with how it was helpful.

Stick with it. It’s not easy, but you’re gaining knowledge on your topic and how to use the databases to serve your needs.
Week 7
Tumblr media
My research has honestly been a bit difficult, there are so many articles that have a lot of information but they aren’t really what I’m looking for. Like the introductions catch my attention but in the body there are different opinions and statistics that make it hard for me to pick the right one. Im working on it and I feel like I have gotten the hand of it, so I salute myself for doing an alright job so far. Theres more to come so I am definitely ready and exited for what I have to present.

Reading the abstract is a great way to find out if the article will be helpful.
Week 7
Explain your process in searching through multiple platforms/database and in obtaining different types of sources and multiple perspectives for the Literature Review.
My process for searching through various platforms involves a lot of scholarly articles so most of the time I am going through UTEP’s database and collecting various articles that mention my topic. I then read the abstract to better understand what the papers will be about and if the abstract has enough information about my topic I skim through the entire paper looking to see if it is in fact relevant to what I am trying to accomplish.

To stay neutral in approach it is as if your sources are talking to each other. Source 1 says this, and source 2 supports it, but source 3 says something different, and so on. Does that help? Focus on the what each source adds to the research, and how it discusses the problem/issue.
Week 6: Questions or Concerns
Tumblr media
My topic is on how the media affects anorexia and bulimia and I do have some questions and concerns on this Literature Review.
1. Making sure my sources support my ideas correctly.
2. Having a paper that is understandable.
3. Not taking a side on the topic but rather staying neutral.
4. Continue working on it and not procrastinate.
5. Staying on topic.

So, yes this is a longer paper than the GA, but every week you’re working on parts of the paper. If you stay on task and use the spring break wisely it won’t be so bad.
Literature Review
Tumblr media
A few concerns that I have regarding the completion of the Literature Review would be:
- Not dedicating the time needed in order to write this paper
- Not having good sources to help me with this assignment
- Going out of topic, as it can easily happen

The research questions are tough, but you’ll be revising them and working on them while you’re writing too. So, yes they are very important, but you don’t have to be correct on the first few attempts.

                             Literature Review Dilemma
Determining how to narrow down my research questions without straying away on a tangent and allowing them to support my research topic.
Avoiding bias when designing my research questions and when choosing my sources.
Organizing my questions so that they allow the literature review to flow smoothly.
