MICRO-URBAN, by Studio de Arquitectura y Ciudad - proposed concept for an affordable, modular housing project along the Platte River in Denver CO. Adjacent to the river, it uses rainwater collection, solar power and the natural resources of the surrounding area to minimize its impact.

image 2:  TYPOLOGICAL MIX with a series of different unit types, including single-story flats, maisonettes, studio flats, and three-story houses. Each type of unit has a different quality of view. The ground access houses are facing a quiet street where they can enjoy more privacy, whereas all deck-access flats are connected with a corridor facing the courtyard.
image 3:  THRESHOLD MIX - a space at each unit access provides a threshold between public and private. it is dimensioned and configured in response to the needs of each unit type - deck access flats have voids at entrances, houses have front gardens between street and entry.

URBAN HOUSING
following are excerpts from a Student Handbook 2015-2016, produced by the Department of Architecture, University of Strathclyde, Glasgow G1 1XJ - https://www.strath.ac.uk/courses/undergraduate/architecturalstudies/:
“The inhabitants of a single building live a few inches from each other, they are separated by a mere partition wall, they share the same spaces repeated along each corridor, they perform the same movements at the same times, turning on a tap, flushing the water closet, switching on a light, laying the table, a few dozen simultaneous existences repeated from storey to storey, from building to building, from street to street.”           Georges Perec: Life A User’s Manual
“One of the prime purposes of architecture is to heighten the drama of living. Therefore, architecture must provide differentiated spaces for different activities, and it must articulate them in such a way that the emotional content of the particular act of living which takes place in them is reinforced.”           Edmund N. Bacon ‘Design of Cities’
Housing developments are traditionally viewed as the building blocks from which the city is formed. Cellular components are repeated in an organised manner to become the physical backdrop to the urban realm. As the city is continually renewing and developing, one might almost argue that physical form erodes and decays, through natural and unnatural processes, and as such these building blocks need to be continually replaced and re-invented. The manner in which this happens is dependent on contemporary issues (e.g. budget, style and construction methods) and wider global issues (e.g. climate change and sustainability). Development may acknowledge the preceding urban form, the urban rules established by patterns from the past, or subvert these rules to its own agenda.

HONDELATTE - LAPORTE ARCHITECTES: 21 social housing units, Paris/ France
The 21 social housing units designed by Hondelatte Laporte Architects are located in two buildings of three and nine floors separated by a garden of Japanese cherry trees. The buildings are part of a major and innovative operation to improve the urban environment around Porte Pouchet in Paris where nine teams of architects worked together to create 180 housing units.

“.....By using private accesses and exterior spaces, the project proposes a way of living which permits the individuality in a dense and social context. Each level leads into 2 flats which have each a terrace of 130 square feet. This terrace, conntected to the living room, is a real additional room, a space between interior and exterior where it is possible for 6 persons to eat and to hang up a hammock on the posts.”
