A hand placed on the druid's chest kept him at bay,             though his eyes flitted down the boy's body.             "It seems that you are actually useful,              more so than I first thought."

Mordred smirked and pulled him closer, their breaths mingling.     “It seems you like me      more than you first let on.”

The silence was something the sorcerer was quite used to. He had spent many years with silence as his companion, as one of the few things keeping him alive, pushing him to study broader, until the day that he could return to avenge his parents. It was the silence that kept him company as he slowly unpacked his belongings— a chest and a bag that he had brought with him on his journey to Camelot. It was not the silence that bothered him, no. Nor was it being placed in the elderly physician’s old chambers— nothing pleased Edwin more than when Gaius chose to leave, and left his place for Edwin. He would have to travel further for his revenge, as one of the men that he wanted to enact it on had fled for Essetir, if the rumors were true, but that also left him with Uther, with not a soul to stop him from ending the Pendragon King. Not a soul, save for one.
                                                           Merlin.
Dark eyes snapped up at the sound of a throat clearing, locking instantly on the former physician’s assistant. A boy of magic he was, and though he did not look it, Edwin would be pressed to say that the boy had more magic than him. Strong magic, ancient magic, such supple, usable magic. If only conformed the right way, taught with the swiftest, sweetest strokes, kind words and soft smiles, it could be used. Gaius had been teaching the boy little, Edwin knew, for Merlin had already approached him when the Lady Morgana was ill. Oh, such strong potential lost, because of Gaius. Edwin would never allow such a thing to happen.
Perhaps that was why he chose to arch an eyebrow curiously, pulling on his taunt, scarred skin. Perhaps that was why the smallest of smiles built on his lips, a light thing of amusement, and why he beckoned the boy further into the room to join him. “It appears that I am staying. Are you disappointed?” He knew the answer already— the boy was disappointed that his mentor had left, and blamed it on Edwin. As he should, it was his fault that Gaius had left, but telling that to the boy would only worsen his opinion of Edwin, and Edwin wanted to be on his good side, not his bad. “Though I am genuinely upset that Gaius felt the need to leave,” and he was— Gaius was further from him now, more difficult to reace, “an intelligent man he was. Surely he knew that I was not to take his position, but become a traveling physician of the court instead.”
A sideways glance at the boy as he set his furs along the cot, piling them down flat. “I prefer to gather my herbs and keep track of ingredients and their storage vessels myself, for quality reasons. And seeing my patients personally warms my heart.” It sounded very much like a refusal to his own ears, and the sorcerer allowed his words to hang in the air for the precious few moments it took him to tuck in the edges of the furs. Straightening up, he turned to face the apprentice with a smile of his lips, eyes bright.
He could give the boy what Gaius was too much of a coward to give him. A future of power, of strength, without fear for himself. He could teach the boy— train his magic in the dark arts of sorcery, in the Old Ways, until Merlin was stronger than him— strong enough to protect himself from any man who wished to harm him for his gift. Edwin could give him life away from fear, a chance to truly appreciate his magic and what it could do for him, what it meant, without being scared of repercussion. He would be strong enough to resist knights, to stand up to a King, to change. Strong enough to end the suffering of his people.
“I would be a fool to dismiss your services, Merlin, especially with one as talented as you. Potential wasted, that would be to have you gathering herbs and running errands. I would have you, instead, alongside me, to learn the symptoms of different maladies, and how to recognize them. Perhaps even with enough spare time to teach you how to mix the remedies, and… a few cures to use when natural remedies do not work.”
Lost for Words || +fallaxamet
The mood was sullen the day after Gaius’ departure from Camelot. It didn’t matter the ways in which Merlin would vouch for the former Court Physician, Arthur’s response was seldom any different. Uther had made up his mind— the decisions made were set in stone.
Merlin didn’t dislike Edwin, though Gwen had voiced her suspicions of the man, something that Merlin couldn’t dismiss entirely. Edwin had magic and the beetles he’d used to cure the Lady Morgana— well, that was magic, too. Suspicious was a word that could go hand in hand with her miraculous recovery, all logical explanations aside. But even so, if that magic was used for good…
And it was. Morgana was alive and well, yet Merlin couldn’t shake his morose for how the situation effected Gaius, who was quite a bit more than a father to him. The chambers were oddly emptied, certain books having been taken with him and whatever else of use that could be fit into Gaius’ travelling bag. Meanwhile, Merlin had been allowed to keep his room in the physician’s chambers and as the physician’s assistant, presumably.
At the very least, Merlin didn’t have to hide who he was from the new physician and that was more of a relief than Merlin could imagine. It wasn’t just Merlin’s secret— it was their secret. Just as long as Edwin could avoid suspicion, Merlin could continue fulfilling his destiny.
And, maybe… he could even learn more than just the science of medicine from Edwin.
Merlin was in his own room when he heard the clattering that would normally alert him to Gaius’ presence. Standing from his bed, Merlin poked his head out from behind the door, raising an eyebrow at Edwin as he mulled about the half-empty chamber. He cleared his throat, alerting the other to his presence before taking a step out of his room. “So— I take it it’s all official now… and you’re staying here?” The question was meant to be rhetorical, considering Merlin could see the answer for himself. He couldn’t help the bit of resentment he felt that Edwin had essentially booted Gaius from the citadel, no matter where the blame was meant to be split and no matter that Edwin had turned down the offer officially. “And… what about me?” Less rhetorical this time, considering no one had informed Merlin of what this meant for him. After all, it had been Gaius’ choice to take him in, not Uther’s, Arthur’s, or any of the other members of the court for that matter. “Gaius has me running all sorts of errands— I mean, when I’m not running around for Arthur. I clean the leech tank, deliver remedies, gather herbs— I earn my keep around here.” He hastened to explain, bordering somewhere along defensive.
The words were very much ‘you’re not going to boot me from my place too, are you?' though he had enough respect not to say it quite like that.

Not a day passed that Edwin's thoughts were not drawn back. He had failed his parents, failed himself, and he had vowed to remain until he could complete his quest. Luckily for him, it had only taken years before Uther was gone, and years more for Gaius to break. He was by no means gone-- the old man would never leave his assistant, but he had let his eye relax in Edwin's regards. The man had managed to convince them all that he was safe-- that he truly served the Pendragons.
There always seemed to be another Pendragon, and always someone to protect them. A curse, for those with an affliction such as Edwin's. Not the gift of sorcery-- that would never be considered an affliction, not even to those who had lost because of it, but the curse of a heart yearning for revenge. Revenge for those who had hurt him, his family, and others like him. One of whom he wanted revenge had passed-- a thing of his daughter's own doing, and the other... he lived on, under the protection of the new King.
However, this King was a better man than Edwin had thought he could be-- even for a Pendragon. If it were for him that Edwin served, he could find little quarrel, so long as Arthur Pendragon kept him away from the elderly man who had allowed his parents to burn.
"My Lord, I fear that I have nothing          to help you. I regret my words, but that does not          make them any less true. There is simply nothing."

Something as rare and valuable as what the young child had brought him was curious. How she come into possession of something so... lethal, was not beyond him, however. Her and her sisters were notorious, well loved and well received, and even one such as himself knew of them.
He himself had spent a great deal of time in Dorne, though not from the lands themselves, and he found that he quite enjoyed it. The heat certainly offset whatever grotesqueries of his flesh-- a burnt man under a burning sun did little and more to attract attention.
And yet this poison was still rare, even to him who had traveled the lands more than once. Something that Nymeria might carry, or Obara. Or her father. But her?
"To answer your question, Lady Sand,            I know of no common cure for a poison such as this one."

Upon glancing at the boy's face,              a bemused smirk tugged at Edwin's lips.              "If you are having problems digesting              your last meal of root stew, I have a herb for that.              No need to pretend otherwise, child.              There is no embarrassment in a tightness of the bowels."

THE MATE HUNT
It’s time for the annual Mate Hunt. Foreigners from every realm gather in one grand place in hopes of seeking the one destined for them. Some people get lucky on the first visit, others have to try again next year. Muse A has been going every year since reaching marrying age in their kingdom and has yet to find a mate. This year feels different. This year, just by entering the grounds, they can feel that their mate is close by.
This is Muse B's first year. They're nervous, sure, but they're also ultimately excited by all the details they're learning: fancy rooms equipped with everything for a safe and romantic night in, parties every night, all the food and booze one can ingest, and to top it all off, everyone is single. What’s not to love?
It’s simple to start with. Register your name, get your discreet wristband that shows your preference, get your room number, and start mingling. If you meet someone you’re interested in, simply register your coupling and go at it. It gets difficult after that.
Muse A knows that Muse B is their mate, but in order to fully make the claim, they must wait three days for the next first reveal ceremony after their coupling. If Muse B displays Muse A's mark after three days, whatever it may be, the mating was successful!
— Plot Twist: Muse B bears the mark of two families, and it just so turns out that Muse C is Muse A's long time rival. Can they agree to put their differences aside in order to love and cherish Muse B without stepping on the other’s toes?
inspired by books and fics and stuff. not my gifs.
